Colleagues and friends remember RICHARD IANNESSA the late Richard “Ike” Iannessa as an innovator who commanded great respect. Starting with the Hyde Park (now Boston) Crusaders, Iannessa was a skilled percussionist and drum major. After finishing his performing career as conductor of the Cambridge Caballeros in 1960, Iannessa began a long and illustrious career of teach- ing, designing, and adjudicating. “[He] was a master of design and staging and well ahead of his time,” recalls former 27th Lancers performer Terence Keenan. Innovations like the use of tape recorders for judges, new approaches to staging and entering the field, the development of dance and choreography for the color guard, and the use of video as a tool for critique and performance analysis can all be traced to Iannessa’s vision. Friend Francis Morris recalls Ike’s two loves, “Love of drum corps and love of family.” 16 DCI Souvenir Yearbook p16-17_HallofFame-EM.indd 1 6/18/09 3:40:51 PM
EMIL PAVLIK In a time when drum corps was characterized by rigid formations and military music, Emil Pavlik—nicknamed “Big E”—truly marched to the beat of his own drum. Beginning his relationship with drum corps almost 60 years ago as a bugle instructor with the Racine Y.M.C.A. Kilties, Emil challenged the activity’s establishment by expanding the repertoire to include music ranging from original compositions to the jazz of Glen Miller. As a result, the Kilties became a magnet that attracted mem- bers from neighboring cities—and from other corps. “Emil was the sound of the Kilties for over 20 years,” says former director Edward Porcaro.
