STAFF The One Vanguard Cadets Corps Director At its heart, the latest production by the Vanguard Cadets Steve Barnhill celebrates the power each of us has to change the world. It Corps Manager tells the powerful tale of a young woman, a reluctant leader, Mannie Cabarloc on whose shoulders rests nothing less than the very survival of her Tour Manager people. But, as she discovers, survival in itself is not sufficient; we’re Bear The meant to thrive. Visually, this show is all about color: creating mood, Assistant Tour Manager revealing character, furthering the story. The corps and color guard Paul Lujan adopt a neutral palette of black and white, with the guard embodying Administrative Assistant a warrior/archer persona. Look for the spectacle of a 42-member rifle Moises Fagundes line during the percussion feature, and get ready for a thrilling climax Drum Majors with a spectacular saturation of drill formations, movement, and color. The Battalion SALT LAKE CITY, UT • battalioncorps.org Open Class Blue Devils C CHRIS MAHER, CORPSREPS.COM Columbians Run to You • It is often said that life is a rat race—a Golden Empire construct in which we are constantly running. We run LORALEE NEWBURY THE BATTALION CHRIS MAHER, CORPSREPS.COM to competeDRUM & BUGLE CORPS at school, work, and in our social lives, and run from fear and conflict toward family and friends. In its 2016 production, named after a soundtrack selection by Pentatonix, the Battalion explores this concept and the meaning behind it. Traditional American folk themes and compositions by Ravi Shankar, Philip Glass, and Andy Akiho complete the program to create a perfor- mance to which we’ll all be running. DIRECTOR: Dallin Hatch CONCORD, CA • bluedevils.org B.D.P.D. • The story you’re about to see is true; the names were changed to protect the innocent. From the streets of Concord, California, members of Blue Devils C are here to protect and serve with their 2016 production. Join them as they present an eclectic and entertaining blend of cop-themed music. From the Hawaii Five-O theme to the 007 song “Skyfall” to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” there is something for every age and musical taste. Will B.D.P.D. prevail and catch the bad guy? Stay tuned to find out. DIRECTOR: Rick Odello TRI-CITIES, WA • columbiansdrumcorps.org Clash! • Set against a backdrop of America in the 1960s and ’70s, the Columbians will use the issue of the wartime draft to illustrate how culture becomes divided by conflict. Starting during a peaceful time of white picket fences, communities are split into two opposing beliefs by the threat of war, later reunit- ing through a mutual desire for peace. The program is enhanced by music from the era, including Jimi Hendrix’s “Star-Spangled Banner,” the Fifth Dimension’s “Let the Sunshine In,” and James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain.” DIRECTOR: Russ Newbury BAKERSFIELD, CA • geperformingarts.org Music Matters • Join Golden Empire in an awe-inspired look at why music affects our minds, souls, and bodies, and influences us emotionally and creatively. Music Matters asks: What is it about music? How do simple notes on a page come to life and create such an emotional response? In four movements, Golden Empire will use the compositions of Karl Jenkins, Edward Robert Shearmur, Andy Akiho, and other original music to explore these questions and the many ways in which we’re moved by music. DIRECTOR: Tim Heasley 121

Guardians HOUSTON, TX • guardiansdbc.org Open Class Heat Wave CHRIS MAHER, CORPSREPS.COM Impulse Radioactive • Celebrating their first year touring outside Incognito their home state of Texas and their first trip to the DCI World Championships, members of Guardians will bring a wave of energy CHRIS MAHER, CORPSREPS.COM to the field with Radioactive. Watch as the chaos of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, blended with Prokofiev and Respighi, mutates into the familiar sounds of Radiohead. The products of this toxic environment will then replicate into the modern sounds of Britney Spears, Imagine Dragons, and a work by staff composers Daniel Montoya Jr. and Benjamin Pyles. DIRECTOR: Johnathan Doerr INVERNESS, FLORIDA • heatwaveofflorida.com Sahara • Heat Wave is back for its sophomore year on the DCI Tour with a production that will bring the heat in more ways than one. Sahara captures the ups and downs of journey- ing through the desert in the hope of finding paradise. Travelers will encounter fatigue, sandstorms, a mirage, and ongoing tension before finally reaching the end of their trip, which presents cause for celebration. Selections ranging from Maurice Jarre’s “Lawrence of Arabia Main Theme” to Sting’s “Desert Rose” bring life to the landscape. DIRECTOR: Jonathan Otero BUENA PARK, CA • impulseyoutharts.org Title TBA • First performing in 1999, Impulse has become instantly recognizable on the drum corps field with its baseball caps and bright yellow short-sleeved uniforms that prominently display the corps’ exclamation mark logo. The Southern California- based drum corps was crowned the DCI Division III World Champion in 2006. 2016 will mark one of Impulse’s most ambitious tours of recent years. The corps will travel to Michigan City, Indiana and Indianapolis this August, in what will be the group’s first trip to the DCI World Championships since 2008. DIRECTOR: Mike Lopez GARDEN GROVE, CA • incognitodbc.org Falling • With original music composed and arranged by corps director Tony T. Nguyen, Falling tells a tale of descent through three realms. An angel falls from Heaven to Earth, falls in love, then falls to Hell. The first act features an original by Nguyen, the second an arrangement of “Falling Slowly” from the film Once, and the third an arrangement of Franz Schubert’s “Der Erlkönig.” Ancient themes of otherworldly proportions will transport us through an epic that’s fit for drum corps. Louisiana Stars LAFAYETTE, LA • louisianastars.org Open Class Racine Scouts In Suspense • Making their inaugural trip to the DCI World Championships in 2016, the Louisiana Stars will toy with the audience’s emotions to hold them In Suspense. As we are invit- ed into a darkened movie theater, we hear the iconic voice of Alfred Hitchcock (known as “the Master of Suspense”), who propels the show. Our nerves are tested with music from M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs and Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands as suspense is mani- fested both in an audiosensory thrill of anticipation and the physical sense of hanging in the balance. DIRECTOR: Neil Simon RACINE, WI • racinescouts.org Title TBA • Founded in 1927 as a Boy Scouts of America drum and bugle corps, the Racine Scouts hold the distinction of being the oldest continuously active operating corps in the coun- try. Known over many years by the affectionate nickname “Chrome Domes,” after their distinctive mirrored helmets, the Racine Scouts have a storied tradition in drum corps competition. The group was recognized as the Most Improved Open Class Corps in 2014. The corps will focus its 2016 summer tour in the Midwest, returning to the DCI World Championships in Indiana this August. DIRECTOR: Cary Byrd Shadow OREGON, WI• shadowdbc.org This Mortal Coil • While 2016 marks the debut of Shadow as an Open Class DCI unit, the group’s roots go much deeper. Since 1972, the ensemble (formerly known as the Oregon High School Summer Marching Band) has nurtured hun- dreds of young people within its ranks. Shadow shuffles off its earthly restraints in This Mortal Coil, driven by a desire to transcend personal limits. The DNA helix serves as an important theme throughout, with musical selections including works by contempo- rary composers Timothy Mahr and Philip Glass. DIRECTOR: Nick Lane Southwind MOBILE, AL • joinsouthwind.org Motion • The energy behind drum corps is fueled not only by music, but by motion. Southwind of Mobile, Alabama generates movement in many forms, from linear acceleration and chain reaction to rotary and revolving, stationary and static, and locomotion. Classical and popular music, including works by John Adams and Blood, Sweat & Tears, will guide the corps through dif- ferent stages of kinetic energy, from its initiation through its contin- uation and on to its cessation. In music and marching, Motion will surely move you. DIRECTOR: Greg Gumina 125

Temperatures rise as musical ideas and visual concepts move in a constant state of flux. Ideas morph into a solid shape to become glass, and an underlying theme reemerges to solidify the newest material. Supported by an original score by drum corps composer Alex Thode, Thunder will take on the unusual science behind glass to give new meaning to the creative process. DIRECTOR: Mike Koch RIVERSIDE, CA • watchmenarts.org Goliath • One of the newer groups to the Southern California drum corps scene, the Watchmen formed in 2013 as a brass and percussion ensemble for several exhibition perfor- mances. Joining the ranks of Drum Corps International’s Open Class for the first time in 2014, the corps prides itself on providing local students with the opportunity to perform entertaining and innovative productions while learning from a talented staff of local instructors. Hall of Fame Drum Corps International is proud to welcome four new members into the DCI Hall of Fame during the 2016 World Championships in Indianapolis. Denise Bonfiglio Color Guard Instructor, Staff Coordinator Over 50 years, Denise Bonfiglio has built an accomplished career devoted to color guard performance and education. First a member and then an instructor with the 27th Lancers (led by her father, DCI founder George Bonfiglio), she later revived the Garfield Cadets’ rifle line, helping the corps win the 1987 DCI Championship. More recently, she has been a key member of the Santa ClaraVanguard organization, direct- ing its award-winning winter guard program. “Together with George Zingali, Peggy Twiggs, and George Bonfiglio, Denise created the success of the 27th Lancers,” Hall of Fame memberWilliam Harty says, “winning the hearts and respect of everyone who watched them perform.” Frank Dorritie Brass Instructor and Arranger, Audio Producer Before becoming a Grammy Award-winning producer for jazz artists like CalTjader and Art Blakey, Frank Dorritie grew through the drum corps ranks as a performer, instructor, and arranger. He has collaborated in various capacities with a lengthy list of corps from across the country. In 1980, his two passions merged with State of the Art, an album containing the first multitrack recordings of drum corps that featured the Blue Devils and Santa ClaraVanguard. Hall of Fame memberWayne Downey says, “Frank’s gift of gab, spirited personality, and eagerness to share information on any topic on the face of the earth shine through while standing in front of either a brass sec- tion or audio engineers.” Dan Farrell Program Coordinator, Phantom Regiment Dan Farrell joined Phantom Regiment as a baritone player at the age of 12 and has con- tinued to work with the Rockford, Ill. corps for more than four decades. Mentored by Hall of Fame members JimWren and Dan Richardson, Farrell took over as caption head of Regiment’s brass section in 1988, helping it win the DCI brass caption award that year. In the 1990s, he transitioned into the role of program coordinator, a position he has held ever since, guiding the creative process of the corps’ design and instruc- tional staff members. “Quite simply, Phantom Regiment and Dan Farrell have been synonymous,” Regiment executive director RickValenzuela says. “The impact Phantom Regiment has had on the drum corps activity is because of Dan.” Myron Rosander Visual Designer, Santa Clara Vanguard A dedicated performer, passionate instructor, and revolutionary visual designer, Myron Rosander served Santa ClaraVanguard for nearly 40 years. He was a part of four DCI championship titles: as a French horn player in 1978, as visual caption head with theVanguard “A Corps” in 1989 and 1999, and with theVanguard Cadets for their 2013 Open Class win. His deep connection with the performers who brought his designs to life led many to consider him the organization’s heart and soul. Rosander passed away on December 20, 2015 at the age of 55. “Myron’s influence on the membership was profound,”Vanguard executive director Charles Frost says. “He served as a beacon of inspiration, history, and focus for what it truly means to be from Santa Clara.” 136 2016 DCI Souvenir Yearbook
