Welcome A word from one of Drum Corps International’s marching members On the behalf of the performing members of Drum Corps International, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 DCITour! We invite you to take your seat and become a part of our world. For the thousands of young performers traveling the nation with their respective drum corps, every show is a precious gift. Many of us spend the entire off-season raising money so that we can work hard all summer long, sleep on buses, and push ourselves past physical and mental barriers. Every second we get to spend in front of you, our fans, is our reward. Performing for you is our greatest privilege and you all are our greatest blessing. You are about to see a display of musical and visual excellence that’s been developed through many hours of practice. But a drum corps show is so much more than that: What you are about to experience is a piece of who we are. With every toss, every note and with every beat, we are giving ourselves away to you.We want you to share in our passion, our struggle, our love for the drum corps activity. We are reaching out to you with our performance to make a connection and share in the powerful moments we can only create together. Thank you to all of the wonderful parents, instructors, volunteers, and audience members who make drum corps a life-changing experience for thousands of young people like myself. Enjoy the show! Sincerely, John Filippone Head Conductor GENESIS DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS 3

Welcome Drum Corps International Office of the Executive Director 110 W. Washington St., Suite C Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 For more than four decades Drum Corps International has had the honor of setting the stage for the world’s most elite marching music ensembles. Our “stages” include some of the most venerable football facilities in the United States: From NFL arenas like the Georgia Dome and Lucas Oil Stadium, to sentimental favorites like J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown and many others.Year after year, spectacular performances have echoed throughout the stands and hallways to create lasting memories for corps members and audience members alike. And the bar is about to be raised yet again as today’s performers—who are guided by the best instruc- tors and designers on the planet—define a new level of excellence. Drum corps organizations provide extraordinary experiences for their members as they trek across the country working tirelessly to achieve their ultimate performances. And as most performers will tell you, their most cherished reward is not about trophies or their placement in competition; it’s the reaction and appreciation they get from fans like you. For those of you who are here today as friends, family and fans, thank you for the gracious gift of your time and resources to support all of these wonderful performers. Your presence alone ensures that each one of them takes home the gold. Sincerely, Daniel E. Acheson Executive Director/CEO DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL 4 2014 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. –Aristotle Official Uniform Sponsor

Premier Events After a successful debut in 2013, Drum Corps International’s SoundSport and DrumLine Battle programs are expanding this season with more events and par- ticipating groups. In addition to ensembles from the U.S. and Canada, participants will include units from as far away as Asia—including the defending DrumLine Battle cham- pions E-Sarn ofThailand—and South America, as Medellín, Columbia’s Grande Banda becomes the first group from that country to take part in a DCI sponsored competition. Designed to be fan-friendly, flexible, and economical for the groups involved, these exciting initiatives are providing opportunities for drum corps organizations, school groups, and other performance ensembles to add to their competitive schedules. Both competitions will be seen at select DCI Premier Events this summer, as well as at theWorld Championships in Indianapolis, where DrumLine Battle will move to a larger fan-friendly venue, Pan Am Plaza. Along with the numerous independent ensembles facing off at these exciting events, a growing number DCI groups are expected to send ensembles to join the fray.Whether it’s SoundSport or DrumLine Battle, the biggest win- ners of all will be the fans. Championships Week From August 4–9, Drum Corps International groups will assemble in the state of Indiana, with the Open Class Championships return- ing to Michigan City, before the action heads south into Indianapolis. In addition to the competition on the field, Indy will be the scene for a range of special events, including the new DCI Performers Showcase (see page 32), the Kick Off Party and Hall of Fame Induction (Wed., Aug. 6), and some intense action from SoundSport and DrumLine Battle groups (page 28)—all taking place in the heart of downtown. Lucas Oil Stadium will continue to be the main stage (pages 32-34), starting with Thursday’s World Championship Prelims, a competition in which both Open and World Class groups will fight for a spot among the top-25 advancing to Friday’s Semifinals. The Semifinals will narrow the field down to 12 corps that will compete in the World Championship Finals on Saturday night. When Shakespeare said, “A rose by any other name RDmSUOwcpRZ would smell as sweet,” he seemed to be implying that names don’t really matter: It’s substance that counts. SmALrQFd True. But as the Bard undoubtedly also knew, people see a substance differently depending on what it’s called. Do you think anyone would want something called red-flowering thorn bush as aValentine’s Day gift? Or watch the San Francisco Regular Guys play baseball? Or expect a band called Gray Sunday to rock hard?  As with roses, the Giants, and Black Sabbath, a name con- jures up an image. It not only identifies people, things, and organizations; it becomes part of their identity. The same holds true for drum corps groups. Fans—and even members or staff—may not always be aware of what inspired their favorite group’s moniker. But they still associate the name with a sound, a look, a performance style, and a competitive history. The corps’ own actions and history are what give their names true meaning.   But where do these names actually come from? As it turns out, there’s no simple answer. Many relate to sponsor- Almost half of the more than 45 corps operating under the Drum Corps International banner have names that start with “A,” “B” or “C.” abc TH 37
