As many as 1.8 million people comprising of indigenous Malays, Chineseand Indians call KL home. This showcase of the multicultural and multilingualMalaysian life is also a place where tradition and modernity stand next to eachother and herald the cosmopolitan nature of the city.‘The Garden City of Lights’As heritage structures get a new lease of life with modified usage, KL retains itscharm through the preservation of pre-war and colonial buildings in the olderparts of the city. Though the British colonial style seems pervasive, the Malay,Chinese, Indian and Moorish styles are prominent as well. Some of those whichreflect Moorish architecture can be seen in the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the old High Court and Magistrates Court Building and the Kuala LumpurRailway Station. The Garden City of Lights transforms at night as KL-ites wind down after a hardday’s work and you get to experience KL in a ‘different light’.Join us as we answer the question of what to do in KL if you only have a day tospend in our feature, One day in KL, as KL–The Guide is all about getting you anauthentic Kuala Lumpur experience – it’s locale, it’s people, it’s culture.
HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE SIGHTSEEING Old KL High Court Building This classic edifice was designed by none other than A.B. Hubback, the British architect who was instrumental in designing many buildings with Mughal architectural style in Kuala Lumpur and other major cities in Malaysia. A distinctive feature of the Old High Court building is the towers topped with a cupola with decorative buttresses around the base. Linking these towers are passageways or verandas with two different types of arches – keyhole arches and ogee arches – another typical traits of Mughal architecture. The towers were originally dining chamberswith private tiffin rooms. This Old High Court Building started to be constructed in1912 and completed in 1915. The building first housed the Kuala Lumpur HighCourt as its name reflects and the Supreme Court but later after the High Court andSupreme Court were at that time moved to the bigger building which was the SultanAbdul Samad Building, this beautiful building then was occupied by the Sessions andMagistrates Court yet it is still referred to as the High Court Building until now.Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur.Railway Station ( KTMB)The former Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is often regarded to be one of the mostbeautiful Mughal structures outside India. And officially, Architectural Digest, aninternational magazine on designs recently published a list of some of the world’smost beautiful train stations on its online publication. Kuala Lumpur’s Railway Stationwas included at No. 4 among 26 other train stations. The Old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station was completed in 1910 to replace a much 17older station in order to cater to the increasing population of Kuala Lumpur besidesacting as the prominent landmark that showed the presence of the British ColonialGovernment then. The station was designed by a British Architectural Assistant tothe Director of Public Works, Arthur Benison Hubback (more popularly known asAB Hubback). The architectural style applied is referred to as Mughal-eclectic orNeo-Mughal or more popularly known as Indo-Saracenic architecture. WhereasIndo-Saracenic architecture is actually the hybrid between the original Mughalarchitecture of India and Gothic mixed with Neo-Classical architecture.
