Making Handwoven Silk Reeling 1. The cocoons are boiled to kill the moth inside and release the filaments of silk. 2. Filaments from 10 to 20 cocoons are twisted together to form a single thread. 3. The thread is hand-reeled into skeins. Dyeing the Silk and Preparing the Loom 1. The thread, naturally a golden yellow color, is bleached white in boiling alkaline water made from Plant charcoal derived from local sources such as banana leaves, cotton pods, and coconut husks, 2. The bleached thread is then dyed with any of a variety of dyestuffs. Both natural and synthetic dyes are currently in use in different parts of Thailand. 3. The dyed silk intended for the warp (vertical elements) is measured, threaded onto the loom, and placed under tension. 4 The weft threads (horizontal elements) are wound onto small bobbins. Making the Cloth Ikat, called mat mii in Thai, is a simply woven textile with patterns dyed onto the weft threads before they are woven. The dying process involves binding bundles of threads with strips of plastic in a predetermined pattern. The bindings resist the dye and thus control the coloring of the yarns. 458
