This was followed by the Holy Communion preparatory service conducted by Ven. Dr. R. M.U. Obegor which was concluded at 6.25 pm to end the day's activities. 2.0 SUNDAY 4TH MAY, 2014 The 2014 Synod Service started at 10:00am with the Choir, Evangelists, Missionaries, Catechists/Church Teacher,, Clergy and Bishops processing into the church with the singing of Hymns A&M number 631 “Thy hand O God has guided”…. Thereafter, the Bible Study titled “Biblical examples of trials of faith – Joseph, the husband of Mary, co-ordinated by Revd Peter Odie was held in groups. The aim of the study was to learn to believe and obey God even in trying situations. The Chief celebrant was the Bishop of Warri Diocese/President of Synod – Rt. Rev. C.E. Ide, JP ably assisted by the Rt. Rev. J.U. Aruakpor (Bishop of Oleh Diocese);who took the Ante-communion. The Old Testament lesson (Joshua 24:14-27) was read by the Deputy Chancellor, Justice Joshua Ikede (KSC); the portion of Scripture for the epistle (Hebrews 9:11-14) was read by Ven. M.O.P. Olobia. Rev. Manasses Okere, the Bishop of Isuikwuato/Umunneochi preached on the Synod theme – “Serving the Lord without fear” Lk. 1:74 (Introduction). The preacher explained that this month of May (when the Synod was taking place) was the fifth (5) month of the year. This, he synonymously equated to being the month of grace, multiplication and of victory i.e as Christ fed the multitude with fivetheme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 2 4 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD (5) loaves of bread and two (2)fishes and Goliath was felled with five (5) stones by David. He stated that the theme – fearlessly serving the Lord in contemporary times as ours was the case as expected, instead we serve the Lord fearfully so the theme of this Synod was apt for - the present day Christians. The Rt. Rev. Okere recalled that Luke, the author of the Gospel where the passage was taken from, as a medical practitioner definitely served the Lord as such in his time. Luke, he went on, stated that he was not an eye witness but had painstakingly investigated and thus wrote to Theophilus– having gathered more than enough information about Christ's Ministry on earth. He hoped that a rediscovery of the Gospel of Luke especially on the theme would be more explicit to all as the days unfold during Bible Study, sermons, teachings, etc. He stressed the day's sermon on Lk.1:5-9 about Zechariah (meaning Jehovah is remembered) and Elizabeth his wife in their service of the Lord. The qualities of this couple were expounded in the said verses:- Their childlessness did not disturb them in their quality of service to the Lord. He highlighted these four (4) outstanding qualities:- (1) Both of them were righteous before God (2) They were blameless i.e not disobeying commands of God and were living in good terms with their neighbours. (3) They were dutiful and though advanced in age, they never went on retirement (as in present day Church of Nigeria Priests etc). NOTE that the wife Elizabeth never discouraged her husband – Zechariah even though they were childless. (4) They were serving the Lord in their old age i.e. serving faithfully as Priest – committed to his vocation. He stated further that service means working (for someone), obeying or paying homage and devotion to God.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 2 5 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD Paul, he continued, always opened his greetings as with “Paul, an apostle and servant of God”, proving that serving was like worshipping i.e. servitude. To worship God is to be His bond servant. The Preacher implored us to take up that “servant posture” as Paul, hence all listeners to his message at this Synod should depict such. A servant, he went on does not dictate but depends on his master. Unfortunately he informed the congregation that today people misunderstood service as lording it over people either in the Church or State. He implored all to serve without fear but in sincerity and in truth. Christians, he continued, should never serve God with other gods. God demands a hundred percent (100%) loyalty to Him at all times. Solutions only come one's way should one be devoted to God's service at all times, just as it happened to Zechariah. Rt. Revd Okere concluded that since God is a Holistic healer, whenever He encounters us, he humbles us totally hence we must serve God without fear with every boldness. The Guest Preacher thereafter prayed that at this Synod, we all should endeavour to serve the Lord wholeheartedly, without fear. The congregation showed their appreciation to God, by dancing joyfully before the Lord with their offerings. The President of Synod – Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP during notices, thanked God for all as witnesses to this year's Synod. He then welcomed and thanked the Guest Preacher – Rt. Revd Manasses and Mrs. Abigail Okere – Bishop of Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Diocese and hoped, we all enjoyed hearing from God's throne through the visiting Bishop. He thereafter welcomed the Rt. Revd John and Mrs. Peace Aruakpor (Bishop of Oleh Diocese). He went on to thank the legal luminaries, Diocesan Officials, Clergymen and their wives, Church Officials, and all and sundry. Everyone was advised to attend Home Cell nearest to them at 5pm. The President of the Synod thereafter said the Benediction. The Bishops, and Clergy led other Church workers in a beautiful array of colours at the withdrawal with the singing of Hymns A&M number 181 “God moves in a mysterious way…”. The service came to a close at 2.40pm.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 2 6 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD 3.0 MONDAY 5TH MAY, 2014. The Holy Communion Service started at 7.28am with Ven. Emmanuel .O. Agbawe, JP as Celebrant. Revd Innocent Ereridjere read the Epistle from Colossians 1:9-14 while the Gospel taken from Luke Chapter 1 verses 13-28 was read by Revd Peters Agamugoro. The Guest Preacher – Rt. Revd Manasses Okere preached on the sub theme “Delivered for Service”. He recalled the passage from the Gospel read. – Lk.13:21 “Deliverance” he defined as an act of setting free from certain danger. Unfortunately in today's religion, this seems to be selling hot. He emphasized that we all need deliverance daily until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. However types of deliverance may differ (not from demons per se). Zechariah talked of deliverance from their enemies. There was a period of about 400years when God was no longer talking to the Israelites till this exposition to the Priest about the birth of John (Messenger) and eventually the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Preacher elaborated on how the Israelites suffered persecution, Gentile domination etc for a long time. Malachi Chapter 3 verse 1 talked of the coming of the Messenger and he (Zechariah) was excited about the final fulfillment of this prophesy hence the outburst - Benedictus Lk.1: 68-80 came forth. The Preacher explained how Israel is hated till date by most countries and they (Israel) seem to be on their own. He then gave an analogy of what took place among his people in his State (Abia) who at the height of daily kidnappings served God with fear as they were scared even inside the Church then. Service and worship, he continued as in Luke 1:74 were used interchangeably. God created us – humans for His pleasure by our worshipping Him. God is interested in our serving Him daily – this is the essence of our deliverance. He then quizzed “In the Church of Nigeria, who are to serve the Lord?”. He related it to what happened during the Exodus, in which everyone – man, woman, children, livestock were enjoined to do so. He thus encouraged everyone to serve/worship God with both their children and substances. He emphasized that service/worship was the only “thing” that “God desires of us. He went on – God does not accept 50% or part-time worship but demands 100% full time”. Females alone were not expected to worship but both sexes; never adults alone as well, leaving out the youths (as practiced today by some in the Anglican Churches).theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 2 7 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD Heb. 9:11-14, Col.1:13-14 tells us of our deliverance from darkness into the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Our service is NEVER a payback to God but a primary act for having been delivered. It is a process which started with our being “born again”, until when our Lord Jesus Christ appears. He stressed that we should worship God with our lives, talents, gifts and wealth. The preacher doubted whether we correctly pay our tithe. He asked rhetorically “How do we serve the Lord? Though difficult, the preacher requested members if possible to come to Church with their cheque books i.e. just as all Israelites moved and were ready to sacrifice all their flock to God. Rt. Revd Manasses Okere concluded that it's only delivered people through Christ that can give their lives and all to Christ through worship. The Hymns A&M 362 – “Revive thy work O Lord” was sung to end the service at 9.00am. 3.1 BIBLE STUDY The Bible Study 1, with the topic “Delivered for service (Col.1 9-14, John 1:13-21) led by Revd Canon O.I. Ophikale commenced at 9.00am. He said “Our Lord Jesus Christ had brought us out from bondage and the dominion of darkness” (Col.1:13). No good work could be done in darkness. Various questions ranging from the meaning of service (2Cor.4:1-2, Matt.25:15- 30); how we could serve Christ in our hearts, home, community etc; whether service include prayers, visiting and encouraging the flocks; challenges one could encounter while rendering service in God's ways (Matt.25:23; Heb.12:2) were asked and answers adequately given. He concluded the study by saying that :All Christian beliefs must culminate in service or else the belief itself will wither away.” “We are delivered to be conformed into the image of Christ and serve as He served”. The Bible study was brought to a close at 9:45am with all saying the memory verse (Deut 6:23) “But He brought us out from there, to bring us in…”. Thereafter members departed for breakfast with prayers from the Bishop and President of Synod, the Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 2 8 Page

The President of Synod then requested all to say the Synod prayers and thereafter delivered his charge with the theme “Serving the Lord without fear (Luke 1:74) to an eagerly awaiting audience. The Presidential Address (Bishop's Charge) began with a brief history of the hosting church, All Saints' Church, Jefia Avenue, Off P.T.I. Road, Effurun. Thereafter, he introduced the Guest Preacher and his wife, the Rt. Revd and Mrs. Manasses Okere. He then dwelt on the Synod theme proper “serving the Lord without fear”. The Bishop noted that there were different kinds of fears which can keep us from being harmed. Those fears are often described as healthy fears. However, according to the Bishop “our focus in this Charge is not on the fear of the Lord per se, but on the fears that cause us to doubt God”. Such fears are unhealthy and must be overcome if we are to live up to our responsibilities as children of God. “Christians” he noted, must not fear what unbelievers fear. Serving the Lord without fear according to the President of Synod, the Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP has its nature and duration. The nature of it is serving in “holiness and righteousness.” While the duration is “all ourtheme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 3 0 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD days” (verse 75). They both have implications for our Faith and so would call for our attention in this Charge. Thereafter, he went on into Diocesan matters highlighting names of Clergy made Deacons, ordained Priests and collation of Ven. REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD Rev. (Dr.) G. Agbuduta representing the Governor thanked the Synod President for his erudite address and pleaded for understanding for the absence of the Governor who was on his way to Abuja. He thoroughly agreed with the President of Synod on moral decadence of the youths (as exemplified in some young boys involved in gay practices at Enerhen Junction, Warri) The issues of Fulani Herdsmen and “Keke Napep riders” as enumerated by the Bishop on his Charge; he stated were in consonance with the state Government's area of concern. The Chief Projectors (Businessmen/women) as represented by Sir Sunny Egho launched with N6,032,125.00, and Abraka Archdeaconry followed suit pledging N2m out of which a payment of N1,200,000.00 had been made . The Chapel of the Advent represented by Ven. Hope Imoroa – donated the sum of N1,200,000.00 Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Onekpe jocularly wished that Rt. Rev. (Prof.) Akao should award Bishops the Doctor of Philosophy degree (PHD) for their various erudite presentations of their “charges”. He went further requesting all to pray God to always serve Him without fear as obviously felt in the Northern parts of this country. He on behalf of the Archbishop, donated the sum of N430,000.00 for the Bishops. The Archbishop (represented by Ven. A. O. Isibe) donated N10,000.00 personally while the Rt. Rev. Dr. Onekpe gave N5,000.00 for himself. The Cathedral through their Vicar, Ven. P.O.G. Whiskel gave N1,400,000.00 while the Diocesan Women gave – N500,000.00. It was a torrent of naira rain in appreciation of the well written and read Bishop's charge. Ven. Luya in his closing remarks appreciated all who launched the charge. He hoped and prayed that their support would surely enhance God's work on earth. The President of Synod then announced at 3.15pm that we would reconvene at 4.15pm after lunch. Sir Emmanuel Abulu then prayed over the lunch to be taken. 3.5 AFTERNOON SESSION The house reconvened at 4.40pm. Members were requested by the President of Synod to sing Hymns A&M 352 “Nearer, my God to thee…”. Brother Fortunatus Akpovero then said the opening prayer. The Bishop, Rt. Revd C.E. REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD announced the names of the Communiqué Committee as follows: 1) Ven. Dr. A.M.O. Pessu (as Chairman). 2) Otirikpe Godspower (Barr at Law) 3) Dame Rose R. Oghene 4) Revd L.U. P. Obibi and 5) Mr. Daniel Obofukoro. The Bishop proceeded to announce the various groups, I to 12 with their reports to be deliberated upon and their respective discussants as well as their Co-ordinators and Secretaries. The President implored them (all groups) to round off by 6pm. The Laity met together after the Groups discussion and later met with the Bishop while the Clergy retired for the day's activities. 4.0 TUESDAY 6TH MAY 2014 The Holy Communion Service commenced at 7.30a.m. Ven. F. O. Ejemrae was the celebrant. The epistle (IPet 3: 12-16) was read by Revd. (Engr.) Dennis Nnamani while the Gospel Matt. 14:22-33 was read by Revd. Dominic Jiroro. The Guest speaker Rt. Revd. Manasses Okere preached on the sub-theme “fearless service” (Lk. 1:74). He appreciated the President of Synod who he said through his charge the previous day had done justice to his topic and prayed the Holy Spirit to aid him. He enthused that most persons feel”fear” had killed more persons than death itself, hence fear seem to be more deadly than death. Men, he went on, fear both the known and unknown, today and tomorrow, self and others, Priests fear congregation, congregation fear the next priest to be posted to them. Even where there was nothing to fear, men fear daily. He prayed that at this Synod and by the help of the Holy Spirit, fear would be overcome. He agreed that fear had killed most people than diseases had done. He made the congregation know that there was both positive and negative fears. Believers have positive fear i.e reverential fear while unbelievers had negative fear. Unbelievers fear is the fear of God's judgment as in Luke 12:5. Hebrews 10:35 states that it's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 3 3 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD He reminded us of Adam hiding in the Garden of Even because of sin (i.e fearing God's wrath). The reverential fear of believers as noted in Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom is about people that have reverence for God. This fear, he stated makes great impact in people's lives. Reading through passages like Luke 1:12, 30 and 65, we saw that fear came upon Zechariah, the Virgin Mary and all that dwelt in Judea that saw or heard about the loosening of the tongue of Zechariah. These fears are different from that of verse 74. The appearance of the Angel and an act of miracle done are fearful though on a positive note. This Synod, Rt. Rev. M. Okere noted is talking about the fear that lacks reverence for God i. e. disgraceful fear. Thus, Zechariah talked about appreciating God and so never had disgraceful fear. Both positive and negative fear can NEVER stay together. In present day Nigeria, fear has gripped all persons living in the country – this is as a result of daily bombings at various parts of the country which though not here but has instilled fear in us even in Warri. He then asked theoretically “Are we going to succumb?” The answer was an emphatic “No”. He gladly informed all that with the arrival of the Messiah, we Christians must serve Him without fear. Messiah, he said, has come to restore our hope. He told the story of a young lady who denied Christ but even the armed robbers knowing that Christ existed killed her. This story was to buttress the fact that fear, death, problems would surely come but he prayed that we MUST stand our ground as we live our lives. Fearless service means we must serve the Lord in the midst of dangers. “Be faithful”, he informed the congregation, “even unto death for a crown of life awaits us all”. The story of the courageous three (3) Hebrew boys – Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego in the book of Daniel Chapter 3 was then recalled by him. He described them as “positively crazy for their God.” Note that verse 16 proved their “Craziness” that should their God not save them when hauled into the fire, so be it that defiantly they won't worship that golden statue.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 3 4 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD Conclusively, the Bishop informed all that the hereafter life to come is more important than the present life. He asked again - “ How fearless can we preach Christ?” Another example of the confrontation of Herod by John the Baptist was recalled. Sin, he stated creates fear in us and this makes us unsure of God answering our Prayers. Our, not knowing of where to serve Eternity creates fear in us as well. He then prayed that we should send fear out of our lives permanently. The Hymn A&M No. 369 – “Songs of Praise the Angel sang” which was sung by all, brought the service to an end at 9.05am. 4.1 BIBLE STUDY II. The Bible Study 2, with the topic “Fearless Service” (IPet. 3:12-16, Matt. 14:22-23) led by Revd Canon O.I. Ophikale, started at 9.05am. He noted that Christ having brought us salvation, we are therefore required to render the service that God has called us into fearlessly. According to him “Courage and boldness are virtues that we must cultivate if we must render fearless service”. However, he noted that whatever service God has called us to render either to him or humanity would require courage as we depend on God to give us the grace to execute His service. Various questions ranging from why God instructed Joshua to be strong and courageous in the service he was to render.(Joshua 1:1-8); how Christians can render fearless services in the face of adversity (Dan. 3:16-20, I Sam.17:22-31, 40- 44; 30:1-6). Whether Christians were expected to render eye services (Eph.6:5-8); and whether we are rendering fearless services in our local churches. Various persons responded to these questions noting that it was wrong to practice eye service in any form. Whether in the presence of the Bishop or not, we should be obedient and render genuine service to God and man. Members were told to render genuine fearless services in all our parishes if we must please God. The memory verse taken from 2Timothy 1:7 “But God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”; was recited by all. The Bible Study session was rounded off at 9:48am with prayers from the Revd Canon O.I. Ophikale (Bible Study leader). Lt. Col. J.A. Alidi (Rtd) was called upon by the President of Synod, the Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP to pray over the food and members departed for breakfast at 9:50am.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 3 5 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD 4.2 SECOND SESSION (MORNING) This session started at 10.30am with the President of Synod, the Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP calling on Mr. Friday Otanomare to lead the house in choruses. Members then read the Synod prayers together. The President of Synod, the Rt. Rev. C.E. Ide, JP invited the Diocesan Medical Adviser, Dr. R.M. Nwafor to introduce the Guest lecturer, Dr. Ajuzie (Doctor of Optometry), who lectured us on the topic “The Sneak Thief of Sight” (Glaucoma) and Cataract. Dr. Ajuzie said Glaucoma is a group of eye disorder that gradually steals sight without warning. According to him “Although the most common forms primarily affect the middle age and elderly, however glaucoma can affect people of all ages”. He said the World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people worldwide are blind due to glaucoma. Also, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and the leading cause of blindness in Africa. Glaucoma, according to Dr. Ajuzie “is not just a single disease process but a group of disorders, therefore characterized by a progressive optic neuropathy resulting in a characteristic appearance of the optic disc and a specific pattern of irreversible vision field defects that are associated frequently but not invariably with raised intraocular pressure” (IOP). The intraocular pressure (IOP) refers to the pressure exerted by intraocular fluids on the coats of the eyeball. The normal IOP varies between I0 and 21mmtHg. Therefore when the IOP rises above this value, it causes mechanical stretch on the lamina cribosa leading to some complications that affect the optic disc. He classified Glaucoma into A – congenital and developmental Glaucoma and B – Primary adult Glaucoma. Signs and symptoms of Glaucoma include photophobia, lacrimation, Headache, redness of the eye, cornea oedema, pains, reduced vision, Rainbow and loss of visual field. Predisposing factors include heredity, age, sex, blood group, caffeine, myopia, steroids, Diabetes, and Trauma. Treatment includes the use of drugs and surgery. The lecturer however noted that Glaucoma can be prevented through proper glaucoma screening for early detection, balanced diet, avoidance and management of the predisposing factors. Dr. Ajuzie concluded his presentation bytheme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 3 6 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD observing that “Glaucoma is “sneak thief of sight” and ignorance is not an excuse from its attack. Therefore, he advised all to have their eyes and that of their families checked today. On the other hand, cataract as noted by Dr. Ajuzie “is the leading cause of blindness according to World Health Organization (WHO). It can occur in either or both eyes. It cannot spread from one eye to the other. The lens is a transparent structure of the eye that helps to focus light or images on the retina. The retina is a light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. As observed by Dr. Ajuzie, light passes through the transparent lens to the retina. The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. So if the lens is cloudy as a result of cataract, the image you see will be blurred. Cataract can therefore be defined as “the development of opacity in the lens”. Types of cataract includes congenital cataract, Traunnatic cataract, metabolic cataract, Electric cataract, Radiation cataract, Toxic cataract and Senile cataract. Pick factors Trauna, Diabetes, electric shock, sun rays, corticosteroids and age. Symptoms include cloudy vision, poor night vision, double vision or multiple images. Others include colour seeming faded and glare, headlight or lamp appearing too bright. Management as noted by Dr. Ajuzie essentially consists of its surgical removal when it is mature. However, non-surgical measures may be of help in certain stage until surgery is taken up. The non-surgical measures are more of preventive than treatment. Preventive non-surgical measures includes use of drugs, adequate treatment of diabetes mellitus, precaution in the use of steroidal drugs, avoidance of contact with sunlight, avoidance of smoking and eating lots of vegetable and fruits. In conclusion, he said natural food had proven to go a long way in prolonging our lives. He enjoined all to imbibe the culture of eating fruits and one would be happy he did. Various questions were raised by members of Synod and these were adequately answered. Dr. Mrs. Jeroh (an eye care provider) also pleaded with all to properly check their eye statuses at least once in a year; including that of our children. Dame Esther Eguegu gave the vote of thanks for an elucidatory lecture. The President of Synod, the Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP prayed for both the lecturer and members of Synod and our families to have good eye sight. Thereafter, the Synod Secretaries, the Rev. Canon R.O. Orido and Dr. Ben Orueriotheme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 3 7 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD (Clerical/Lay respectively) read the Minutes of Synod Proceedings from Saturday 3rd May 2014 till date. Members then departed for Group discussion at 12.55pm which lasted till about 1.45pm when delegates went for their lunch. The Bishop thereafter met with the Clergy at 3.00pm. 4.3 TUESDAY 6TH MAY, 2014 - EVENING SESSION: 4.3.1. VOTING ON DIACONATE ORDINATION: The evening session started at 4.55pm. The President of Synod, the Rt. Rev. C.E. Ide, JP then asked all to say the Synod prayers. Thereafter, he (President of Synod) enlightened members on the issue of permanent diaconate which was referred to the Dioceses of the Church of Nigeria “We are to vote on this matter as to whether we approve of it or not”. According to the President of Synod, the Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP, “Report of approval rating would be recorded in percentage, and presented during the General Synod of the church of Nigeria taking place in Enugu in September, 2014”. To guide us in voting, it is recommended that the permanent Diaconate: (a) Should be an ordained ministry with limitation that cannot proceed beyond the Diaconate order. (b) Those to be ordained should be both men and women, not be less than 50 years for women and 45 years for men; (c) They should be in the category of the non-stipendiary – non- remunerative ministry; (d) A parish or local based ministry that is not transferable; (e) At ordination and subsequently they are to dress as normal deacons. These guides are contained on page 96 of the Bishop's Charge. REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD (iii) The Role of the Diocese in the death of a Clergy that died in active service: The Bishop said we don't pray for our Clergy to die in active service and that what is in the condition of service should not be tempered with. The issue of the welfare of the Clergy family (wife and children) would be referred to the Diocesan where a committee would be set up to look into the issue. (iv) Request that Medical Bills of Clergy be built into their stipends: The Bishop said this was not feasible as it was proposed for implementation this year but later discovered that whatever was built in the budget for that purpose may be exhausted before time. What we are practicing today is the sharing of the medical bills between the Diocese and the Parish of the Clergy or Catechist/Church Teacher. (v) Purchase of Speed Boats: This was already in the Bishop's Charge. The Bishop said money that would be realized from mission week this year would be plough towards the purchase of speed boats for evangelism in riverine areas. (vi) It had been observed that some men are not attending the Home Cell. The Bishop said he attends regularly and frowns at those that visit him at 5:00pm and he would normally attend the Home Cell with his visitors. Those not attending were directed to be attending henceforth. Some Clergy were reported not to have accepted the harmonization of the Home-Cell. Any found guilty of the issues pertaining to the Home Cell would be tried. (vii) Training for lay Church workers. The Bishop said the door is opened for Lay workers in the Diocese to further their studies. The President of Synod, the Rt. Revd. C.E. Ide, JP said if any Lay church worker could show evidence that when he leaves, the work in his Church would not suffer and if satisfied with that, such staff could be permitted. (viii) Use of Offering Envelopes: This was introduced to limit the number of times we dance to the Chancel during thanksgiving. The offering Envelopes containing 8 jackets were printed to shorten the time spent during services. (ix) Giving: We were admonished not to be tired in giving. We should give for the development of the Church. Those who disturb others from giving should refrain from it.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 4 0 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD (x) Church Signboards: We are encouraged to change rusty, small and dilapidated signboards. If the Church does not have money to change them, good spirited individual could foot the bill. (xi) Men of 70 years deprived from being voted for at vestry election. There is no provision for anyone above 70years of age not to vote or be voted for during vestry elections. However, at age 70, that person ought to regard himself as an elder statesman and be content with giving of advice. (xii) Having Synod rounded off on weekends. We were advised to pray for the counsel of God to be revealed on this issue. (xiii) Men Fellowship request for admission in the order akin to the Women's Guild. They have already submitted their Constitution to the Legal men and was still undergoing scrutiny before final approval. (xiv) Taking Money at Source: This is not good. The money should be counted before spending. Those who invite Bishops and other ministers should be prepared to give them good purse. But the Clergy should not be greedy to ask for himself. All were encouraged to give generously to the Clergy. (xv) Senior/Junior Clergy wives should carry each other along. (xvi) Clergy to understand fully the issue of endowment, assessment: Clergy to be fully informed on issues concerning tithing, endowment etc, so they would be able to mobilize their members to flow along. (xvii) Church support for youth Activities: The Vicars must scrutinize their request and see the one they could attend to. However, it is hoped that this would be discussed by the group. The Revd Amos Imini said the closing prayers and members departed at 6:55pm for supper to round off the day's activities. 5.0 WEDNESDAY 7TH MAY, 2014. Venerable P.O. Onoriose, as the Celebrant, at 7.25am requested the congregation to sing Hymns A&M 365 – “Praise my soul, the king of Heaven” as the processionaltheme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 4 1 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD Hymn. The Epistle – I John 3:6-10 was read by Revd Canon M.O. Imonisan while the Gospel taken from Luke 1:68-75 was read by Revd P. Odie. In his sermon, the Guest Preacher, Rt. Revd Manasses Okere thanked God for guiding us through this very successful Synod. He then thanked the President of Synod – Rt. Revd C.E. Ide, JP, his wife, Mrs. P.O.E. Ide and other members of the Diocese for having made their stay very enjoyable and memorable. He prayed God's blessing on us all for this hospitality. The Guest Preacher said he believed that God had spoken to everyone these past days of the Synod on how to serve Him without fear, through the sermons, Bible studies etc. He thus would summarize all these through the day's topic – Serving the Lord in Holiness and Righteousness all our days. Luke 1:75. Unfortunately, he went on, these virtues/qualities of holiness and righteousness are lacking in our Christians/men of God of our generation today. He emphasized that these two (2) inseparable characters of God are required of every child of God. He informed the congregation that our position, money, regalia/appearance cannot take the place of holiness/righteousness. Joyfully, Zechariah at the end of an unholy/unrighteous service, he rejoiced that the end of such an unworthy position had come with the soon-coming messenger and eventually the Saviour. The preacher regretted that most Christians think it was only when we are in Church when going for Holy Communion/going back to our seats that we portray holiness and not in our offices/market places etc. as well. Christians now, pathetically assume different public life and so called “private life” – there should be no difference in the way we live our lives, wherever we find ourselves, he emphasized. He pleaded that we should feel and portray Jesus everywhere – this being the hallmark of Christianity. Jesus, he went on, summarized life into two (2) factors as Kingdom of God and Righteousness/Holiness of God. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness – Mt.6 This is God's own standard not ours. Every kingdom, he said reflects the life of its king so the nature of the kingdom of God is holiness and righteousness. We therefore must conform to this nature. Holiness is cutting off worldliness ortheme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 4 2 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD anything that is unclean; and be connected to the Divine touch. Holiness means our upward looking while righteousness is towards our neighbor i.e. love of God and justice (both upwards and downwards looks). Holiness and Righteousness must be practiced before God not the behavior we put up before Bishop/Pastors or even before people: it should be by the standard of God so we can NEVER limit it. God “looks” into our hearts not physical appearance. Romans 12:1 endears us not to be conformed to this world but be transformed. Transformation comes by the renewal of our minds through the spirit of God. Holiness and righteousness involve service not appearance, but also by allowing God get involve in our whole life. Rt. Revd Manasses Okere recalled the pathetic story of Aaron's two (2) eldest sons that died in God's service of holiness and righteousness in the book of Leviticus 10:1-3. This portrays God's uncompromising stance. He emphasized that rendering service was not enough but what is acceptable was to serve in righteousness and holiness. He requested that we all have a responsibility to manifest and exemplify God's Holiness and Glory because others seeing this in us would be convinced to serve God. The Bishop stressed that Holiness has three (3) processes namely:- 1) One should be born again 2) Abstain from sin and thirdly, one should 3) Pray that the Holy Spirit would sanctify and give us grace to serve Him. Different connotations are given to people in churches in today's parlance as: 1) Christian – general word i.e. church goer 2) Born Again – when we give our lives to Christ. However, every child of God is supposed to be born again. He asked the question “How do we serve God today?, as Priest, Synod delegates, PCC/Diocesan Officials? “Are we serving God in Holiness in accordance to what He commanded?”theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 4 3 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD Unfortunately, he reminded the congregation that when we profane God's service, God will not remember our past good deeds/services but will judge us from that “bad” day so we should serve God in holiness and righteousness daily. He concluded that we should not compromise our service to God but prayed that God would give us the desired grace. He then asked us to pray for grace to serve Him in Holiness and Righteousness. The Holy Communion Service ended at 9.05am with the singing of the recessional Hymn No.1 of the Selected Hymns “To God be the glory”. 5.1 BIBLE STUDY 3 – Wednesday 7th May, 2014. The Bible study 3 with the topic “serving in Holiness and Righteousness all our Days” (1 John 3:6-10, Luke 1:68 -75) led by Rev. Canon O. I. Ophikale commenced at 9:07a.m. He (Bible study leader) noted that one thing God request from us was that we must serve Him in holiness and righteousness. He observed that it was one thing to serve the Lord with an outward appearance of holiness and righteousness before men and another thing to be righteous before God, and to walk in all his commandments and ordinances all the days of our lives. Various questions were raised as to why we should serve God in holiness and righteousness (Luke 1:75); the challenges of serving God in holiness and righteousness ( Neh 6:11-12, Matt. 13:22, 1 John 2:15 – 16, 1 Timothy 6:10) among others. In conclusion, the Bible Study noted that the scripture rightly says that without holiness no man can see God (Heb 12:14). This implies that if we must serve Him, we must therefore serve Him in holiness and righteousness:- The Bible study leader, the Revd Canon O.I. Ophikale thereafter made an altar call and 15 persons surrendered their lives to God and were prayed for by the President of Synod, the Rt. Rev. C.E. Ide, JP which rounded off the Bible Study session at 9:46am. 5.2 RECEPTION OF THE GUEST PREACHER. The Diocesan Public Relations Officers (Clerical) requested the two(2) Bishops – the Rt. Rev. C.E. Ide, JP and wife Mrs. P.O.E. Ide and the Rt. Revd Manasses Okere and wife were called to the High table, at 9.50am to commence the reception of the Guest Preacher.theme: Serving the Lord without Fear – Luke 1:74 SAT. 3RD – WED. 7TH MAY, 2014. 4 4 Page
REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ELEVENTH SYNOD Ven. E.O. Agbawe JP on behalf of the Diocese gave gift to the Bishop and wife, the traditional “kolanuts” was given and this was immediately supported by a 'downpour of naira rain' from all present. More gifts were presented to the Guest Preacher and his wife by the old students of Trinity College, Umuhia, Effurun East-Archdeaconry and Mr. Agadaigho. Sir Austin Gbinije received the gifts and money on his behalf. Rt. Rev.
