152 Computer (Input - Output) Computer is like our brain. Instructions that we give to a computer are called input. Input can be a picture, or written text. Mouse, keyboard, and scanner are some common input devices for a computer. They tell a computer what to do. What a computer does with the input and shows us is called the output. It is what we get from the computer. Printer, monitor, and speaker are some common output devices for a computer. CPU

153 Input Devices Keyboard: A keyboard contains many keys: 1. Alphabet keys – used to type words 2. Number keys - used to type numbers 3. Enter key - to finish inputs 4. Scanner: It scans documents, which can then be stored in a computer. Output devices Printer: It prints and sends out processed data from the computer. Monitor: It displays the processed results. Speaker: Through speakers, we input & output audio commands. We can communicate with people sitting away from us with the help of a computer. 154

Starting to Type Facts to learn before typing: Pointer, cursor, insertion point l When you move the mouse, the pointer moves around on the screen like an arrow. l Bring the pointer to where you want to start typing and click. This is the insertion point. l The pointer now takes I shape. This is called cursor. l You can move the cursor anywhere by clicking and moving the mouse. cursor Pointer insertion point 156

l Click on start: The pointer is now on start. Click the mouse. l A list appears. l Move the pointer to programmes. l Another list appears. l Bring the pointer to Microsoft Word. And click the mouse. l A blank screen opens up. l Move the pointer to the place where you want to type. Click the mouse. The pointer now changes to cursor. l Press on shift key with the left hand finger and press on ' ' key. H l Capital ' ' appears on the screen. H l Release the left hand finger. Type the other letters e, l, l, o in small letters. l Again press shift key with left hand finger and press on number ' ' 1 key on the top. The ' ' mark appears after ' ' on the screen. !  l Tap the space bar. The cursor moves one space. l Press enter key; cursor moves down. 158
