South North East My Neighbourhood Do you know what places are around your house ? Do you know what places are around your school ? Buildings around your school or house and people who live or work in these buildings form a neighbourhood. First, let us know the four cardinal directions. Stand facing the Sun in the morning. That is east. Your back faces west. Stretch both your hands. Your left hand points north, while your right hand points south. West 126

The places near your house make your neighbourhood. Learn about some places found in your neighbourhood. School : School is a place where children learn to read and write. In a school there are many rooms such as classrooms, Principal's room, teacher's room, office room, activity room and library. Market : Market is a place where there are a number of shops selling different things such as fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, flowers, clothes and many other things. Nowadays, there are huge buildings that sell different things under one roof. They are called Supermarkets. Hospital : When we are sick, we go to a hospital. Hospital is a place where sick or injured people are treated. The doctors and nurses in the hospital take care of sick or injured people and help them get well. Bank : We keep money and other valuable things in a bank. These days many neighbourhoods have ATMs. We take out money from an ATM. 127

Police Station : All neighbourhoods have a police station. A police station helps in keeping our neighbourhood safe. For our safety, Police move around our neighbourhood even at night. This is called night patrol. We must help the police. Railway Station : When we want to travel by train, we go to a railway station. A railway station is a place where trains stop so that people can get on and travel from one place to another place. We book our tickets and board the train from the railway station. Postal bags and other goods are also carried by the trains. Post Office : We send and receive letters and parcels through the post office. A post office is a place that helps us to send letters, parcels, money orders to other places, far and near. We can buy stamps and envelopes in a post office. Every post office has a letter box. We post our letters in a letter box. Fire Station : Sometimes buildings catch fire. Then we call the fire station. The firemen bring fire engines. They put out the fire and save the people. 128

How does TV help in communication ? TV has regular news telecasts. This helps us in staying informed about happenings around the world. E-mail makes written communications fast and easy. Mobile Phone, Telephone, Letters and Fax are means of one-to–one communication. Today, however we have post offices and postmen to deliver letters.
