2 Parts of a Computer Dear teacher, Yes students! Does a computer A computer has have different different parts and parts? we will learn about them with their uses and features. Dear children, As all the machines have different parts, a computer also has many parts. A computer system is shown here with its basic parts like CPU Box, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse and Speakers. Monitor CPU Box Speakers Keyboard Mouse Let us learn about some of its parts. All the parts of a computer work together to perform a task. 12

Monitor  A monitor looks like a television (TV).  It shows us the work done on a computer.  We can watch movies and cartoons like Doraemon, Little Krishna, etc. on it. Keyboard Do You Know ?  It is like a typewriter. There are more than 100 keys  It consists of small buttons, on a keyboard. called keys.  It helps us to type words and numbers (by pressing the keys). Note Pressing the keys of a keyboard to write on a computer is called typing. Mouse  A mouse is a pointing device.  It is used for pointing and choosing pictures/icons. Note Pressing the mouse button is called clicking. When we move the mouse with our hand, a pointer on the monitor also moves in the same direction. You can also play games using a mouse. 13

C.P.U. This is the CPU box. (System Unit).  C.P.U. stands for Central Processing Unit.  It is also called the brain of a computer.  It helps the computer to think and work. The CPU is located inside the CPU box. This is the CPU. Speakers  Speakers are used to listen to music or any sound played on the computer.  They usually come in pairs. Do You Know ? Bluetooth speakers are wireless (they do not have wires). Headphones  Headphones are used to listen to the music or sound without disturbing others. We should listen to the music on the headphones with low volume otherwise it will damage our eardrums. Joystick  A joystick is used to play games on a computer.  We can control the pointer (player) on the monitor using this. 14

Printer  Printer helps us to print the work done on the computer on a paper. The printed paper which comes out from the printer is called a printout. Steps to Turn Off a Computer Start Button When you have finished your work on the computer, you can switch it OFF as shown in the following steps: Step 1: With the help of the mouse, click on the Start button on the Desktop screen. 19

Step 2: Click on the Shut Down Shut down option in the Start menu. Monitor Step 3: Switch off the monitor by pressing the power button on it. Step 4: Switch off the UPS by pressing the UPS power button on it. Power Step 5: Switch off the power switch. Switch Tips to Take Care of a Computer You should always keep some tips in mind on how to use the computer the right way.  Do not eat or drink near the computer system.  Keep your fingers, pencils off the screen.  Sit at your assigned seat only.  Leave the computer as it was when you entered the lab.  Do not fight with your computer partner. 20

 Always cover the computer when not in use. This  will keep the dust away from the computer system.  Press the keys of the computer keyboard gently. Pressing the keys hard may damage them.  Always use the mouse pad. It helps the mouse to work properly.  Do not sit close to the monitor. It may cause stress to your eyes. Keep one arm distance between yourself and the monitor. Always keep your back straight.  Always clean your computer with a soft and dry cloth.  Do not play with the wires attached to the computer. Mouse Buttons Left Scroll Right Button Wheel Button A mouse has two buttons and a scroll wheel. Left Button: The button on the left side of a mouse is called the Left Button. It is used for ‘left-click'. Right Button: The button on the right side of a mouse is called the Right Button. It is used for ‘right click'. Scroll Wheel: The mouse has a wheel in the centre. This wheel is called the Scroll Wheel. 24

Pressing and releasing a mouse button is called clicking. Mouse Pad The pad on which you keep and move the mouse is called the mouse pad. How to hold and click the Mouse? It is very important to hold the mouse correctly. Read the instructions given below:  Always keep the mouse on a mouse pad.  Place the palm on the mouse and hold it with your thumb and the last two fingers.  Keep the index finger on the left button and the middle finger on the right button. Index Middle Now, you can move the mouse on the Thumb Ring mouse pad and see the mouse pointer on the computer screen. When we Little move the mouse, we can see a small arrow moving on the monitor. This arrow is called the pointer . Mouse Functions 1 2 3 Single-Click/ Clicking Single-click means pressing the left mouse button and releasing it quickly at once. It is used to select an item on the monitor. 25

Dragging (Drag and Drop) It means pressing the left button and moving the mouse till the place where you want to drag the object, while keeping it pressed. Let's learn about the different types of keys. Alphabet/Letter Keys The keys which have letters/alphabets printed on them are called the alphabet keys. 32

They are used for typing letters, words and sentences. There are 26 alphabet keys on the keyboard. Number Keys The keyboard also has number keys 0 to 9. These are also called the ‘Numeric Keys'. There are total 10 number keys on the keyboard. These keys are used for typing numbers. Num Lock Numeric Keypad Note Fun Activity Press the Num Lock key to type Type your name and roll number on the numbers using the numeric a computer. keypad located on the right side of the keyboard. Pressing Num Lock key will also switch on/off the Num Lock light. Spacebar Key The spacebar is the longest key on the keyboard. Teacher’s Corner Open WordPad and introduce the keys of the keyboard, so that the students can learn how to use a keyboard for typing. Fun Activity 1. Colour the keys using which you can type your name. 2. Colour the keys using which you can type your address. Enter Key This key helps us to start a new line or a new paragraph while typing. There are two Enter keys on a keyboard. 34

Caps Lock Key The Caps Lock key is used to type letters in capital. Pressing this key will switch on/off the Caps Lock light . For example, before using Caps Lock (Caps Lock light is off), the text that is typed, will appear in small letters. i like my computer very much. After using the Caps Lock key (Caps Lock light is on), the text we type will appear in capital letters. I LIKE MY COMPUTER VERY MUCH. Delete Key and Backspace Key Sometimes we make mistakes while typing on the computer. To erase these mistakes, we can use the following keys: Delete Key Delete key erases anything typed to the right of the cursor. Arrow Keys Arrow keys are used to move the cursor left, right, up or down on the computer screen. A cursor is a small blinking line on the monitor which looks like this |. It shows the position where a letter, number or symbol can be typed. Up arrow key : It moves the cursor up. Down arrow key : It moves the cursor down. Right arrow key : It moves the cursor to the right. Left arrow key : It moves the cursor to the left. UP arrow LEFT arrow RIGHT arrow DOWN arrow Cursor location by using the arrow keys. 36
