1 Parts of a Computer Dear Students, Yes Teacher, We have learnt a lot A computer has about computers in different types of the last class. Now, let parts. Let's learn us learn about parts of about them. a computer. Dear children, A computer has different parts and all of them are connected with each other. For example, Monitor, CPU Box, Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, etc. Some of the parts like Scanner, Web Camera, Printer, Speakers and Headphone make a computer more useful. Let us learn about them. Monitor CPU Printer Speakers Keyboard Mouse 4

Monitor  A monitor looks like a television (TV).  It shows us the work done on a computer.  We can watch movies and cartoons like Doraemon, LED Monitor Little Krishna, etc. on it.  Older monitors were big and heavy called CRT monitors.  Today, monitors are thin and light. Mostly, they are TFT or LED monitors. Keyboard CRT Monitor  Keyboard looks like a typewriter.  It has of a number of small buttons, called keys.  We type words and numbers on the keyboard.  Using the keyboard, we also give commands to the computer to do our work. Mouse  A mouse is a pointing device.  It is used for pointing and choosing pictures/icons.  A mouse pointer helps us to point, select and move an item on the screen. Central Processing Unit (CPU) CPU System Unit  CPU is made of Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) and Control Unit (CU).  The CPU is also called the brain of a computer.  A CPU is located inside the cabinet called CPU box.  It does all the calculations in computer system.  It also controls other computer parts.  It can execute millions of instructions in a second. Speakers  Speakers are used to listen to music or any sound played on the computer. They output the data (audio) in the form of sound.  They usually come in pairs (Left and Right speaker). Do You Know ? Bluetooth speakers are wireless (they do not have wires). Headphones and Earphones  Headphones and earphones are personal speakers that are used to listen to the sound or music without disturbing others.  Headphones are larger and we wear them overhead.  Earphones are smaller in size. They are stuffed in the ears.  Constant use and loud volume may damage our eardrums. Joystick  A joystick is used to play games on a computer.  We can control the pointer (player) on the monitor using the joystick. Web Cam or Web Camera  A web camera captures photos and video.  It is used for live video chat and video conferencing. 6

Printer Dot matrix  Printer helps us to print the work done on the printer computer on a paper. Inkjet printer  The printed paper which comes out from the printer is called a printout or hard copy.  Printers are of different types such as dot matrix printer, laser printer, inkjet printer etc.  Dot matrix printer is slow in printing and makes noise.  Laser and inkjet printer are faster in printing and they do not make noise. Supplement-1 Both mouse and keyboard are important input devices that help us to give instructions and insert data into the computer. Lets learn about them in detail. Mouse A computer mouse looks like a real mouse. It is attached to the CPU using a wire. It helps us to move the pointer to select items on the computer screen. Mouse Buttons A mouse has two buttons- Left button and Right button. Left Scroll Right Button Wheel Button Mouse Scroll Mouse scroll is located between the left and right mouse buttons. It is used to scroll the pages up and down. Mouse Pointer It is a slant arrow on the screen. As we move the mouse, the Mouse pointer also moves on the screen in the same direction. Mouse Pad A mouse pad is a surface for placing and using a computer mouse.  Place the mouse on the mouse pad then hold it with your thumb along with the last two fingers.  Place your first (index) finger on the left button and your second (middle) finger on the right button. Now, move the mouse on the mouse pad and watch the movement of the cursor pointer on the screen. Types of Mouse Click Pressing down and releasing the mouse button is called clicking. It is used for pointing and selecting the objects. 1. Single-Click: Single-click means pressing and releasing the left mouse button once. It is used to select an item on the screen. 2. Double-Click: Double-click means pressing and releasing the left mouse button twice (at a short interval). It is used to open an item. 10

Pressing down and releasing the mouse button is called clicking. It is used for pointing and selecting the objects. Keyboard A keyboard has different types of keys, which are used for typing letters, numbers and symbols. Alphabet Keys All the letter keys are called the Alphabet keys. They are 26 in number, i.e. from ‘A' to ‘Z'. These keys are used to type letters, words and sentences. Ex - Type : My name is ____________________________________ Press all those keys that spell your name. Your name will appear on the screen. Note: Press the Enter key to move the cursor to the next line. Spacebar (Key) This is the longest key on the keyboard. It is used to give blank space between the letters and words. Let's type a sentence : Computer is fun. After typing each word, press the Spacebar key once to give a space. Enter Key This key is used to bring the cursor to the next line. Number Keys Number keys have numbers (0, 1 … 9) on them. These are 10 in number, from 0 to 9. We use them to type our roll number, dates, telephone number, etc. Number keys are either placed above the alphabet keys or at the right side of the keyboard as the Numeric Keypad. Caps Lock Key The Caps Lock key is used to type letters in capital. Press Caps Lock key once, the Caps Lock light will turn on. Note Lights on the Keyboard should be ON to use this in active move. Cursor/Arrow Keys A cursor is a small blinking line on the screen. There are 4 cursor movement keys: Up Arrow Key : It is used to move the cursor one line up. Down Arrow Key : It is used to move the cursor to the next line down. Left Arrow Key : t is used to move the cursor one character on the left. Right Arrow Key : t is used to move the cursor one character on the right. Backspace Key This key erases the letters typed to the left of the cursor. Example Type: ←I LIVEE IN INDIA Here, cursor is after the word ‘INDIA'. Press the left arrow key to bring the cursor after ‘LIVEE'. Press the Backspace key to erase the extra ‘E' in ‘LIVEE'. Delete Key This key erases the letters to the right of the cursor. Example You want to erase the extra letter ‘E' in ‘LIVEE' in the following sentence: →I LIVEE IN INDIA Move the cursor using the left arrow key to the right of the letter ‘V'. Press the Delete key. The letter ‘E' will be removed. 12

Supplement-2 Tux Math Let us start Tux of Math Command, following are the steps to open it. 1. Click on Start ® All Programs. 2. Click on Tux of Math Command folder. 3. Click on Tux of Math Command (Windowed). OR Double click on Tux of Math Command icon  Now Click on Play alone tab.  Tux Math window appears as shown below.  Click on Math Command Training Academy. You can choose any of the option.  We have selected Addition: 0 to 5. Now the following window appears.  You will see numbers with addition symbol start falling, calculate the sum, type the answer and press Enter key to strike the numbers.  Press Esc key to come back to the main menu. 13

They are light in weight and can be carried out easily. They can be kept on our lap and also used while travelling. They have a touchscreen to use them (using our fingers). We can use an on-screen keyboard for typing. 17

Now, the operating system gets loaded in the computer's memory. Loading of operating system in the computer’s memory is called booting. Operating System Have you ever gone to a restaurant? You must have noticed that your parents place an order to the manager and waiter serves the order (food) at your table. In other words, the manager runs the restaurant. In the same way, an operating system in a computer acts as a manager and runs the computer system. An Operating System is a software that helps us to use/operate the computer system. It manages and controls the different parts of a computer system and makes them work together. It acts as an interface between the computer and the user. There are various types of operating systems. Some examples of operating system are: 1) MS DOS 2) Linux 3) MAC OS 4) MS Windows 7 23

In this chapter, we are going to learn about MS Windows 7 operating system. MS Windows The MS Windows is a popular operating system (OS). It was developed by Microsoft Corporation, USA. There are various versions of Windows namely Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 etc.. MS Windows is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) based operating system and easy-to-use. The latest version of Microsoft Windows series is Windows 10. Windows 7 Desktop Once the computer is started, the screen which appears on the monitor is called the Desktop. Various components of a desktop are: 1. Wallpaper 2. Icons 3. Gadgets 4. Let us discuss about these parts one by one. Wallpaper: The wallpaper is the background picture on the desktop. Icons: The small pictures on the screen are called the icons. Gadgets: Gadgets are the small and helpful objects in a computer. They have their specific functions. They are used to watch time, calender, weather, world time, etc. on a computer. Taskbar: This is a horizontal bar at the bottom of the desktop. Now, let us learn about the various parts of the taskbar. Start Button: The Start button is found on the left side of the taskbar. When we click on the Start button, a menu appears which is known as the Start menu. We can find and open all the programs from the Start menu. 25

Quick Launch toolbar: The Quick Launch toolbar provides an easy access (in single- click) to our favourite programs. These programs can be opened in one click. Middle Section: The Middle Section shows us the programs and files we have opened and allows us to quickly switch between them. System Tray: The System Tray is used to show the date and time and various other notifications. Open a Window using the Start button When we left-click on the Start button, the Start menu appears. It contains a list of programs which are installed in the computer. Follow the steps given below to open a program: 1. Put the mouse cursor on the Start button and left-click on it. 2. The Start menu appears. 3. On the right-side of the menu, left-click on the Computer option. 4. The Computer window appears on the screen. Click on the Computer option. Click on the Start button. Shutting Down a Computer After the work is completed, let's shut down the computer. To shut down the computer, you have to follow the given steps: 26

Ribbon: It contains the tabs and their associated commands arranged in different groups/sections. 4. Work Area: It is the white space to type text. 5. Cursor: A cursor is the small vertical blinking line in the work area. You can type in the work area starting from the current cursor position. 6. Ruler: It is used to set (and view) the width of a document. 7. Zoom in and out: It is in the form of a slider and is used to zoom in and zoom out a document. 8. Control buttons: Control buttons are used to minimize, maximize/ restore and close the WordPad window. Typing Text You can type in WordPad by pressing the keys on the keyboard. 32

Now, let's learn about the changing the font colour. You must have used a pencil to write in a notebook. It writes the text in black colour and you can't change its colour. While typing in WordPad, by default, it is also typed in black colour. But here, you can change its colour. Steps to change the font colour are: 1 2 1. Font Size 1 2 Steps to change the font size are: 1. Click on the arrow on the Font size list box located in the Font group. A list of numbers appears. 2. Click on the required number (font size). Now, start typing the text. It will appear in the selected font size. Remember Lesser number will make the font smaller and higher number will make it bigger in size. Font Style You can apply font styles on a text to make it thicker/bolder, slant/italic and underlined. These styles are used to highlight particular parts of a text. A. Amazing Fact You don't need to give a file name while saving a drawing in Tux Paint. Quit Click on the Quit button. OR Press the Esc key. OR Click on the Close button (located on the right side of the title bar). A confirmation dialog box will be displayed. Click on the Yes button. If you have not saved your file, the following message will be displayed. Click on the Yes button, if you want to save the file before quitting Tux Paint, else click on Close button. The Lines tool This tool helps you to draw straight lines using the various brushes and colours. It provides different types of line brushes to make beautiful drawings. Steps to use the Line tool are: 1. Click on the Lines tool from the toolbar. 2. Select the required line pattern from the selector (Brushes pane). 3. Select the required colour from the Colors box. 4. Click and drag the mouse to draw the line. 48

A drawing using the Line tool The Shapes tool This tool helps you to draw some simple filled and outlined shapes. Shapes given on the right pane are square, rectangle, circle, ellipse, triangle, pentagon, rhombus and octagon. Steps to use the Shapes tool are: 1. Click on the Shapes tool from the toolbar. 2. Select the required shape pattern from the selector (Shapes pane). Note Some shapes can change in proportion (e.g., rectangle and oval), others cannot (e.g., square and circle). 3. Select the required colour. 4. In the canvas, click and drag the mouse to stretch the shape out from the point where you clicked.
