He said nothing and started rinsing off the soap from the dishes I scrubbed. Together, we washed the dishes, cleaned the table, swept and mopped the floor. After everything was done, he asked me what I ate as a vegetarian today? I just casually pretended to not mind and said that I didn’t eat and I wasn’t hungry. He was shocked and said: “You had not eaten today? That’s not okay! Let me make some sandwich for you.” It will be very quick, just give me a moment.” Immediately, he grabbed a pot and boiled some eggs, then peeled the shell and chopped up the boiled eggs, mashed the yolk and then added some mayonnaise. Though I was a vegetarian who can still eat dairy and eggs, it was actually my very first time having egg mayonnaise. Even then, someone made this for me, when I was truly hurt in my soul. To be honest, it was a year where I was too unfortunate to meet those who hated me a lot, but it was also very fortunate that I met someone who has love (/kindness) in his heart. For the years since then, I never joined any of the class trips, because the feeling of loneliness being left alone was too deeply ingrained, but also that I wanted to 237

后记 首先我想感谢为这本书提供故事的人。他们的故事让我更加 笃定食物是可以对一个人造成深远的影响的。不管我们自己 在外吃过多少美食,到最后最能让我们想念的,往往是家人 做的菜、是在家乡卖的食物、是和爱人或朋友一起做,一起 吃的食物。它们不一定得是什么山珍海味,它可以简单得像 一个三明治、一颗半生熟蛋。 这让我想起了我还没来到大城市读书的日子。那时候的我, 嫌弃妈妈煮的白粥配菜脯蛋;觉得爸爸打包的杂菜饭不好 吃;吃腻了附近卖的炒菜头粿。但是多年以后,这些食物反 而是我最心心念念的味道。虽然白粥配菜脯蛋还是那样清 淡;杂菜饭还是一样不好吃。但只要我一回家乡,我还是会 吃。炒菜头粿也变成了我回家必吃的食物。 对我来说,在收集完了故事之后,其中的挑战之一就是我们 必须去进一步探索他们的故事。因为不是每个人都把故事填 的很完整,我们就需要一个个去和他们沟通,让他们觉得很 自在地分享他们的故事。我们也很兴奋,可以去探索书本作 为表达我们想要的东西的媒介。除此之外,语言障碍也是我 们的挑战之一。由于我们有两位组员不谙华文, 而且本书 VI

又是以华文为主,所以就造成了我们在沟通、翻译文本的时 候花了多一倍的时间。不过这并不是阻挡我们完成这本书和 影片的障碍。我们都对这本书和影片的成果感到满意,也很 感恩愿意敞开心扉和我们分享个人故事的他们。 我希望读了这本书的你们可以有所感受。从这一刻开始,创 造属于你和你家人、朋友或者是爱人之间的美食,那个会让 你回忆的味道。 苏嘉仪 VII

Epilogue Firstly, I would like to thank all contributors who provided their story to us. Their story makes me more affirm that food can high influences a person in long term. No matter what great food that we have tasted outside, in the end, those that keep reminding us are the dishes that our family made, in our hometown, those we made together with our friends and loved ones. The food doesn’t need to be luxurious, it can be as simple as a sandwich or a half-boiled egg. This reminds me of the days before coming to this big city. At that time, I was judging my mom’s porridge with egg, blaming how bad the mixed rice my dad packed for me tasted, and feeling tired of eating the fried carrot cake nearby. But, after all these years, these food are the ones that I remember the most. Even though the porridge still tastes flat, as well as how bad the mixed rice still tastes, but, I’ll still eat them every time I went back to my hometown. The fried carrot cake also became a must-eat food for me. For me personally, after collecting all these stories, one of the challenges that we were facing was that we need to discover all their stories further and more in-depth, because VIII

not all their stories are completed and structured, and we needed to get in touch with them, making them feel more comfortable to share their stories. We were also excited to explore books as our main medium to convey ideas. Other than that, the language barrier was also one of the challenges that we had to face - since two of our team members are not good at Mandarin, and our book is mainly designed in Mandarin, thus causing us to spend more time than expected on translating the stories. But, this didn’t stop us from completing our book and all the videos, and we’re quite satisfied with the final outcome of both our book and the videos, as well as showing our greatest gratitude towards all the contributors who openly shared their stories to us. I hope that you’ll get inspired through reading these stories, From now on, find the food that connects you with your loved ones - the taste of your memories. Soh Chia Yee IX
