scene\thad\tno\tsuch\teffect\ton\tveterans\twho\tdid\tnot\thave\tPTSD,\tsuggesting\tthat\tin\tthe\tPTSD victims\tthe\tnerve\tpathways\tthat\tregulate\tendorphins\twere\toverly\tsensitive\tor\thyperactive \u2014an\t effect\t that\t became\t apparent\t only\t when\t they\t were\t reexposed\t to\t something reminiscent\t of\t the\t original\t trauma.\t In\t this\t sequence\t the\t amygdala\t first\t evaluates\t the emotional\t importance\t of\t what\t we\t see.\t The\t study\t was\t done\t by\t Dr.\t Roger\t Pitman,\t a Harvard\t psychiatrist.\t As\t with\t other\t symptoms\t of\t PTSD,\t this\t brain\t change\t is\t not\t only learned\tunder\tduress,\tbut\tcan\tbe\ttriggered\tonce\tagain\tif\tthere\tis\tsomething\treminiscent\tof the\t original\t terrible\t event.\t For\t example,\t Pitman\t found\t that\t when\t laboratory\t rats\t were shocked\t in\t a\t cage,\t they\t developed\t the\t same\t endorphin-based\t analgesia\t found\t in\t the Vietnam\t vets\t shown\t Platoon.\t Weeks\t later,\t when\t the\t rats\t were\t put\t into\t the\t cages\t where they\t had\t been\t shocked\u2014but\t without\t any\t current\t being\t turned\t on\u2014they\t once\t again
