Franklin!Avenue!and!Franklin!Theatre!! ! 231!South!Edison!Street!!On!June!17,!1892!a!group!of!reporters,!policemen,!city!councilmen!and!a!judge!took!their!own!“SLC!Underground”!tour!but!we!would!likely!never!have!heard!about!it!if!not!for!the!public!trial!testimony!of!Rose!Miller,!Elsie!Anderson/St.!Omar,!and!Goldie!Shears.!Western!historian!Jeff!Nichols!was!able!to!retrace!the!party’s!itinerary!in!“A!Grand!Night!Out,”!which!this!summary!draws!heavily!upon.!!!The!evening!started!when!six!city!councilmen!decided!to!investigate!the!rumor!a!police!officer!was!abusing!a!prostitute!named!Rose!Miller.!When!they!arrived!at!Miller’s!residence,!two!reporters!from!the!Times!and!Deseret!News!were!already!there!and!two!members!of!the!council’s!police!committee!also!joined!them.!Miller’s!story!is!a!moving!one!–!as!a!young!brothel!“inmate”!she!met!George!Albright,!a!policeman!who!proclaimed!his!love!for!her!and!often!tipping!her!off!about!pending!police!raids!and!paying!the!occasional!fines!she!received!(which!served!in!many!ways!as!a!de!facto!tax!on!prostitution).!But!he!had!also!threatened!to!kill!her,!twice!holding!a!gun!to!her!head.!She!and!the!other!women!claimed!they!were!trying!to!live!“respectable”!lives.!!During!the!interview!one!the!councilmen!asked!for!beer.!The!trip!was!becoming!something!more!than!just!a!factXfinding!investigation.!One!of!the!reporters!relayed!the!tasty!news!that!the!police!chief!and!police!court!justice!were!presently!in!Hattie!Wilson’s!brothel!at!53!Franklin!Avenue.!The!party!decided!to!go!in!search!of!Chief!Janney!willing!to!put!in!a!little!overtime!on!this!Friday!evening!for!a!good!cause.!!!

At!public!trial!the!story!of!the!underground!tour!came!out.!Rose!Miller!and!Elsie!Anderson/St.!Omar!were!convicted!on!prostitution!charges,!Judge!Kesler!was!eventually!fired,!Chief!Janney!and!the!policemen!were!fired!but!Janney!was!later!reXhired!and!eventually!became!chief.!The!policeman!originally!accused!of!abusing!Rose!Miller!lost!his!job!but!never!faced!charges.!The!mayor!censured!the!councilmen!for!their!shenanigans!but!had!no!power!to!do!more!and!was!even!criticized!by!a!former!councilmen!who!indicated!he,!too,!was!frequently!called!upon!to!make!similar!tours!of!investigation!and!if!the!mayor!had!interfered!would!tell!him!to!“take!a!trip!to!the!regions!where!his!Satanic!majesty!presides!and!where!his!imps!hold!high!carnival.”!Under!different!circumstances!this!might!have!been!taken!for!an!invitation!to!tag!along.!!Time!moved!on.!The!madams!navigated!the!periodic!arrests,!fines,!and!visits!from!city!officials.!Finally,!in!1908!soXcalled!“progressive”!city!officials!broke!up!the!regulated!prostitutions!districts!in!favor!of!a!new!location!called!“The!Stockade”!on!the!West!side!of!town.!Eventually,!reformers!shut!this!down!and!prostitution!was!driven!truly!underground.!Franklin!Avenue!became!Edison!Avenue.!The!Franklin!Theatre!building!went!on!to!become!the!Salvation!Army’s!Workingman’s!Hotel!and!later!a!print!shop.!The!building!still!stands!and!is!eligible!to!become!a!historic!preservation!site.!Sadly,!this!has!not!happened.!!We!have!been!told!on!good!authority!(by!an!expert!of!prostitution,!historical,!of!course)!that!if!you!wander!through!Mount!Olivet!Cemetery!you!can!find!the!beautiful,!ornate!resting!place!of!a!Salt!Lake!madam.!It’s!a!lot!harder!to!find!the!lonely,!unmarked!grave!of!the!antiXprostitution!crusader.!!!

The!Judge!Building,!8!East!Broadway!What!do!a!white!salamander,!a!copy!of!\"The!Oath!of!a!Freeman\"!and!an!Emily!Dickinson!poem!have!in!common?!They!were!examples!of!the!many!forgeries!made!by!Utah's!own!Mark!Hoffman.!He!was!an!extremely!accomplished!craftsman!whose!false!documents!were!purchased!and!authenticated!by!experts!all!over!the!country.!One!shouldn't!give!him!too!much!credit,!however,!because!he!murdered!two!people!in!an!effort!to!divert!attention!from!his!crimes!and!may!have!been!on!his!way!to!murder!someone!else!when!the!bomb!he!was!carrying!in!his!car!exploded,!severely!injuring!Hoffman!himself.!! ! ! !Magical!salamander!speaks!to!Joseph,!forged!Oath.!!In!October!1985,!the!usually!peaceful!Salt!Lake!valley!was!shocked!to!learn!two!people!were!killed!by!shrapnelXfilled!bombs,!one!delivered!to!Steven!Christensen's!office!in!the!historic!Judge!Building!and!in!the!other!left!in!the!driveway!of!Kathy!Sheets'!home.!Both!victims!died!horrific!deaths.!As!Christensen!and!Sheets'!husband!were!former!business!partners!whose!investment!business!was!failing!miserably,!
initial!police!suspicion!was!focused!on!their!association,!possibly!on!someone!who!had!suffered!financial!losses!in!dealing!with!these!two!men.!!However,!the!following!afternoon,!when!Hoffman!himself!was!injured!in!a!bomb!blast,!Hoffman!himself!became!the!chief!suspect.!By!this!time,!authorities!had!found!out!that!Christensen!was!working!with!the!LDS!Church!to!purchase!some!of!Hoffman's!documents!in!an!attempt!to!control!access!to!material!that!was!less!than!flattering!to!the!church.!Also,!witnesses!reported!that!a!man!matching!Hoffman's!description!had!been!seen!leaving!the!Judge!Building.!Eventually,!Hoffman!confessed!to!the!murders,!and!in!a!plea!deal!was!sentenced!to!life!imprisonment!and!has!so!far!not!been!granted!parole.!! !The!Judge!building.!Just!what!was!so!disturbing!to!the!LDS!Church!about!Hoffman's!documents?!In!early!Mormon!history,!the!prophet!Joseph!Smith!translated!a!text!found!on!buried!golden!plates!revealed!to!him!by!the!angel!Moroni.!Translation!of!the!Book!of!Mormon!took!place!over!an!extended!period!of!time!and!parts!of!it!had!
