Mahatma Gandhi: 1) Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2nd October, 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat State. 2) He liked the Puranic character ‘Satya Harischandra’ and was influenced by him very much. 3) He studied law in England and left for South Africa to practice. 4) He revolted against racist authorities with the weapons ‘Ahimsa and Satyagraha’ in Africa. 5) He returned to India in 1915 and learnt about the illegal methods of Britishers in our country. 6) Gandhi launched a movement called Non-Cooperation Movement in the year 1920. 7) In 1930 he started Salt Satyagraha Movement against the British. 8) He started Quit India Movement in 1942 with a slogan called ‘Do or Die’. 9) Finally, the British rulers declared independence on August 15, 1947. 10) Gandhi was shot dead in 1948 by Nathuram Godse. CHAPTER 15-DIVERSITY IN OUR SOCIETY B. Jawaharlal Nehru i. Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Prayaga (Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh in a noble and rich family. ii. Motilal Nehru was his father and he was a freedom fighter. iii. Jawaharlal Nehru was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and joined Freedom Movement of India. iv. He participated in Quit India Movement too. v. He became the First Prime Minister of India after Independence in 1947. vi. He died in 1964. C. Potti Sree Ramulu i. Potti Sree Ramulu was born in 1901 in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. ii. As a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, he worked lifelong to uphold the principles of Satya (truth) and Ahimsa (non–violence). iii. He became famous for undertaking a fast untill death for achieving the state of Andhra Pradesh. iv. He died on 16th December, 1952; the Andhra State was formed in October, 1953. Unity in diversity is the chief characteristic feature of India. ii. India is a land of much geographical diversity like high mountains, low plains, plateaus etc. We can experience such diverse landscapes just by taking short trips from where we live. iii. There are differences in climate, languages etc. The people of India ignore these differences of race, caste, religion and language and they are live together. iv. The people of India exhibit unity in times of need or threat. v. So, I feel proud to be an Indian. 2.3 Key Concepts i. Thar Desert is situated on the border of India and Pakistan. A large part of it is in Marwar region of Rajasthan state. ii. People here depend upon grazing sheep, goats and camels. iii. Many traders coming from Iran and Afghanistan or those going to those countries pass through the Thar desert iv. As a result, small places grew into cities like Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur. v. Sikkim is a small state situated in the eastern parts of the Himalayan Mountains. vi. Kanchenjunga, one of the highest peaks of the Himalayas, is in Sikkim. vii. Sikkim is on the boundary between India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet (China). viii. Both Thar and Sikkim are in India. Thar is in the desert region whereas Sikkim is in Himalayas. ix. The unity of Indian people was formed through common struggle against British colonial government called the National movement. x. Duggirala Gopala Krishnaiah is the leader of Chirala –Perala movement. xi. As a part of Non–Cooperation with the British government, he built a city called Ramnagar in the outskirts of Chirala. xii.
