Constructed in the 13th century as an Arokhayasala (hospital), Ku Ban Khwao features a laterite main Prang (tower) and a Bannalai (library) that are enclosed by a boundary wall, and a Barai (pond) outside the wall. The main Prang houses two Buddha images, one of which is believed to grant good health to the worshippers, and on the door frame is a Khmer inscription that reads “Come and pay respect to the Lord in the Asram”. Head to the Pottery Village to learn about pottery making. The villagers relocated from Nakhon Ratchasima province and found that the clay here is suitable for making pottery, and they have been making pottery using the traditional technique for the past 200 years. Visitors can observe this ancient local wisdom, as well as purchase the pottery; such as, cooking pot, vase, and bowl. Ku Ban Khwao and Pottery Village 204 ISAN CULTURAL routes
Proceed to Amphoe Na Dun and call in at Wat Ku Santarat Photharam, a temple that was constructed during the reign of King Rama III. The temple features an exquisite Hup Taem (mural painting) both inside and outside of the Ubosot (ordination hall). The Hup Taem is still in good condition and depicts the story of the Life of the Lord Buddha, scenes from the Vessantara Jataka (one of the popular Buddhist tales), and Sin Sai epic (a famous literature of the Northeastern region). Make a visit to Ku Santarat, a Khmer sanctuary that comprises a square laterite structure inside the enclosure wall, while outside the wall is a large rectangular Barai measuring 10 metres by 12 metres and is lined with laterite steps. Ku Santarat is one of the 102 Arokhayasalas that King Jayavarman VII established. There are important archaeological objects found at this site including several Buddha images, which are now kept at Wat Ku. Continue to Phrathat Na Dun or the Buddhist Park of Isan, which is the significant historical site of Maha Sarakham province. Excavation in this area in 1979 revealed that this site was once a part of the Dvaravati city of Champa Si and uncovered several important artefacts including a stupa that contained a three-layered casket made of gold, silver, and bronze, that enshrined the relics of the Lord Buddha. Later, Phrathat Nadun was constructed in the same style as the stupa with the height of 50.50 metres and enshrines the relics found in the stupa. Phrathat Na Dun 205 ISAN CULTURAL routes

Considered as the most important Buddha images of Maha Sarakham province, these two Buddha images are from the Dvaravati period, made from laterite, about two metres high, and located not far from one another. These two Buddha images are believed to grant plentiful seasonal rainfall as well as happiness and luck to the worshippers. Phra Phuttha Mongkhon Phra Phuttha Ming Mueang The origin of the two Buddha images is unclear, but legend has it that they were constructed by Thao Linthong, who killed his parents in order to become the new city ruler in place of his father. He later realised his wrongdoing and built Phra Phuttha Mongkhon in dedication to his father and Phra Phuttha Ming Mueang for his mother. 206 ISAN CULTURAL routes

Mueang Fa Daet Song Yang Amongst the ruins is the main monument called Phrathat Yakhu, an octagonal-shaped Chedi on a redented square base. The Chedi features a combination of three periods, in which the square base showcases the Dvaravati style of art, the octagonal body illustrates the Ayutthaya style of art, and the top demonstrates the Rattanakosin style of art. It is believed that Phrathat Yakhu houses the relics of a highly revered monk; hence, the name ‘Phrathat Yakhu’ because ‘Yakhu’ is an Isan word for ‘highly revered monk’. Visitors are invited to visit the Mueang Fa Daet Museum, which is located within the area of Wat Pho Chai Semaram, to observe the ancient sandstone Bai Sema found during the excavation at Mueang Fa Daet Song Yang.
