6This past year we were thrilled to celebrate 25 years as a club. We are extremely proud of how much LGC has grown and where the club is heading as we enter a new decade. In the past 25 years, London Golf Club has built a reputation as one of the finest golfing venues in England, and our history is filled with notable memories. From the very beginning, golfing legends graced our fairways. The club opened in 1994 with the Charity Challenge Skins Match between Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, and Tony Jacklin. Prominent men of the day, such as Sir Denis Thatcher, Nigel Mansell CBE, and Sir Sean Connery, soon followed to enjoy the Golden Bear’s latest creation. In 2008 and 2009 the Heritage welcomed the very best from the European Tour, such as Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, and Lee Westwood, as they fought to be crowned the European Open Champion. The International followed by hosting the 2014 Volvo World Match Play Championship, which brought 16 of the World’s finest players to Kent, including Henrik Stenson, Patrick Reed and Francesco Molinari. Most recently the International hosted the 2018 and 2019 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship and both events were filled with golfing greats like Colin Montgomerie OBE, Paul McGinley, and Michael Campbell, battling to win the trophy.Within the pages of this edition we look back at LGC throughout the years and feature exclusive interviews with our past champions. We also take a round-by-round look at the 2019 Staysure PGA Seniors event, won by Welshman Philip Price. In 2020 The Open returns to Kent and the World’s finest will play at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich. As we await this anticipated event, we recap The Open 2019 in Northern Ireland, won by Shane Lowry.Flipping through this edition you will also find a glimpse of club life today. We have grown leaps and bounds since first opening, and plan to continue adapting our events, both on and off the course. Inside we celebrate our 2019 Order of Merit competition winners, Open Event winners, and highlight our ever-popular social events. We plan to continue with these events in 2020, continually seeking to give our members the best opportunities to use the full extent of their membership. On behalf of all the team here at London Golf Club, we hope you enjoy reading this edition of The London, and we wish you all the best for the 2020 golfing season.Stephen Follett - Chief ExecutiveFOR ADVERTISING ENQUIRIES PLEASE CONTACT:Tel: +44 (0)1474 875702Fax: +44 (0)1474 879912Stansted Lane, Ash, Nr Brands HatchKent TN15 7EHwww.londongolf.co.ukCHIEF EXECUTIVEStephen FollettDIRECTOR OF GOLFCallum NicollMARKETING EXECUTIVERikki StanleyHEAD OF FINANCEPeter GreeneEDITORSIMG GolfGRAPHIC DESIGNBig PrintingPRINTPureprintWELCOMETO THE 2020 EDITION OF THE LONDONlondongolf.co.ukCOVER CREDIT Jack Nicklaus & Nicklaus CompaniesJANU AR Y 2020

8londongolf.co.ukI want to congratulate the club for the 25 years. We’re very proud to be part of it and wish the team a continued success. Jack Nicklaus, 18-time Major Champion & Golf Course ArchitectOn Wednesday 10th July 2019, LGC celebrated 25 Years since the Grand Opening and marked the occasion with a Members & Guests 25th Anniversary Cup.
The Club officially opened in July 1994, with the Charity Challenge Skins Match played on the Heritage Course. Jack Nicklaus, the course Architect, battled with Seve Ballesteros and Tony Jacklin, but in the end Seve’s magical short game helped him win. Since then both golf courses have hosted many Professional events: the Jack Nicklaus Signature Heritage course, hosted to the 2008 & 2009 European Open, while the Nicklaus Design International course has hosted including the 2014 Volvo World Matchplay Championship and the 2018 & 2019 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.I was extremely honored to be asked to design your golf course, for rarely is a designer given the opportunity to work with such a choice piece of property. From the moment I saw the site, I knew that the distinctive natural features and beauty of the setting would ultimately shape my design and produce a golf course of exceptional character. I hope you are as pleased as I am with what we have created.By thinking your way around the golf course, you will find that precision, not necessarily power, will test your skills. I hope that you enjoy both the beauty and challenge each hole presents as Seve, Tony and I did in your excellent Grand Opening. 13londongolf.co.ukLondon Golf Club offers two great courses, and I’m lucky to have enjoyed both of them in fantastic conditions over the last 25 years. Over the years I’ve taken good advantage of the club’s 5-star hospitality, hosting many enjoyable functions with family and friends too. I had the pleasure of enjoying great company when playing at the club, but also when travelling abroad using some of the reciprocal agreements. We had the chance to visit some amazing clubs around the world and bookings have always been very easy through the LGC team. Being a member gave me chance to meet great friends over the years, including Alan and David Robinson, Morris Lyon, Malcolm Collins, Harry Cunningham, Ray Mehmet, John Laurel, Ian Pierson, John Patterson, Len Goodman, and many others. With them we played some fabulous rounds of golf!David Letchford, LGC Member

15ROSSFISHER INTER VIE W :Q: How did it feel to win such a prestigious event as the European Open, on English soil?A:It was a massive tournament to win in such an early stage in my career. It showed that I could win more than once and lead from the front. To win it at home in London was very special for me and my family.Q: What is the best memory you have of the Heritage Course at London Golf Club?A:Best memory would have to be going out Thursday morning having not seen the course or played a practice round, Adz (my caddy) telling me what club it was and where to hit it, trusting him and going on to open with a course record 63. Also holing the monster putt for Eagle on the 5th from about 80ft on Sunday! Q: Which advice would you give to anyone playing the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course?A:The best bit of advice I can offer amateurs would be to keep the ball on the fairways, as when we played the London Golf Club the rough was very thick. It felt like it rewarded a good driver of the golf ball who is long and straight.DATE OF BIRTH: 22.11.1980PLACE OF BIRTH: Ascot, EnglandHEIGHT: 6\" 3' (191cm)INTERESTS: Cars, moviesTOURNAMENTS PLAYED: 347EUROPEAN TOUR WINS: 5CAREER MONEY WON: €18,312,885.08EUROPEAN OPEN CHAMPION2008His victory at the 2010 Irish Open helped secure his place on The Ryder Cup team later that year. He also set a new course record at the famous Old Course at St Andrews with a final round 61 as he piled the pressure on eventual winner Tyrrell Hatton at the 2017 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.londongolf.co.uk
CHRISTIANCEVAERChristian Cevaer won his second European Tour title in 2009 at the European Open at LGC, beating a field containing 25 of the world’s top 50. His first victory came five years previously, at the 2004 Open de España, and followed a year of injury problems after he fractured his right elbow and damaged ligaments and tendons in a skiing accident in 2002. Cevaer played 2003 on a medical exemption and eventually rediscovered his form, finishing a career-best 41st on the 2004 Order of Merit. However, his elbow problems resurfaced in 2012, limiting him to ten events, meaning he would play the 2013 season on a Medical Extension Category. Born on the island of New Caledonia, he became World Junior Champion at 17 and took a scholarship at Stanford University in California, the same as Tom Watson and Tiger Woods. A major swing change at the end of 1998 left him struggling in 1999 but reaped the benefit in 2000 with eighth place in the Challenge Tour Rankings, winning the Finnish Masters en route.INTER VIE W :Q: Christian, you’re the 2009 European Open Champion. What is the best memory you have from that week?A:Well the whole week really as it is «my major» victory, the best win of my career in a strong field with 25 of the top 50 in the World. The last moments and champagne celebration on the 18th green stand out was magical. The crowds were great. It was even so special that I had been through a rough spell with worrying factors off the course and missing the last 2 cuts by one shot the week prior (the Irish Open and the PGA Championship at Wentworth). So my World was turned upside-down that week at London Golf Club!EUROPEAN OPEN CHAMPION2009Q: Which hole of the Heritage Course did you enjoy playing the most?A:I enjoyed mastering the difficult 18th as most players lost strokes on that hole over the week. I played it one under if I recall right so I gained some valuable strokes over the field there. On Sunday, I managed to draw a perfect drive against a strong left to right wind. Earlier, while walking to the 10th tee, I paid attention to the pin position. Therefore I knew I had to try to stay right of it. Again, I drew a perfect Rescue 4 which pitched at the pin and released to the back fringe. With the leader board, I know I had 2 putts to win. Managed perfect pace on the 1st one downhill to «gimme range» for the winning putt. My up and downs on 16th and 17th were key as well!Q: If you could give one piece of advice to any LGC Member playing the Heritage Course, what would it be?A:Well, I recall elevated greens with run-offs, plenty of deep bunkers and some water hazards. So favour shooting for the middle of the greens, especially if they are firm like we had them during the tournament.RESIDENCE: Murcia, SpainDATE OF BIRTH: 10/04/1970HEIGHT & WEIGHT: 6ft 0in 11st 2lbs (181cm 71kg)FAMILY: Wife: Fabienne (m.1999); Children: Damien (2001) Lila (2009)EUROPEAN TOUR WINS: 2BIGGEST EUROPEAN TOUR PRIZE:€41,220 (2009)16londongolf.co.uk
MIKKOILONENIlonen made history by becoming the first player from Finland to win on the European Tour with his maiden victory at the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open in 2007. The second of his five wins came just five months later at the 2007 Scandinavian Masters. In the same year he became the first Finnish player to break into the top 100 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He won the 2000 Amateur Championship and turned professional the following year. Fourteen years later he won the Volvo World Match Play Championship at LGC.Q: Mikko, you had a perfect week during the 2014 Volvo World Match Play Championship. Did you change anything in your mind-set for that specific tournament because of the match play & knock-out format?A:My mind set was to play stroke play, so no matter the opponent I tried to play for the best possible score on each hole, which led to a slightly more aggressive style of play. In the end it worked out as I scored really well all week.Q: What was your favourite hole when playing the International Course?A:I liked the par 5’s because when you compete in Match Play a lot can happen on long holes. Q: How does it feel to have your name in the winners list, together with legends of the game such as Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros?A:Surreal really, I have the trophy at home and still look at the list of winners. To be honest, sometimes I think to myself: is it really true that my name is along-side with these legends? Of course I feel very proud to be within this group of historic players who have won the event!RESIDENCE: Lahti, FinlandDATE OF BIRTH: 18/12/1979HEIGHT & WEIGHT: 6' 2\" 13st 1lbs (187cm 83kg)FAMILY: Wife: Kati (m. 2010); Children: Eino (2011), Elma (2013)EUROPEAN TOUR WINS: 5BIGGEST EUROPEAN TOUR PRIZE:€375,000 (2014)INTER VIE W :17londongolf.co.uk
For being part of the European Tour Destinations network, London Golf Club was afforded a team to play in the most waited pre-tournament Pro-Am. I had the pleasure to team up with LGC Members Vipen Khanna & Cormac Hicks and also multiple European Tour winner Barry Lane.A quick warm up on the range preceded the speeches and opening tee shot from Angel Gallard, the Golf Course Architect, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the course opening. All 18 teams then took on the challenge of the Stadium Course in glorious sunshine and great weather. Former Masters Champion to next year and another great Ian Woosnam lead the winning team of Sir Rocco Forte, Ian Knox and Iain McInally with a score of 89, beating Terre Blanche’s team by a single point. After playing in the Pro-Am, our Members also had the chance to play in the Alliance Pro-Am competition on Friday and Saturday, accompanied by Staysure Professionals Andrew Oldcorn & Tim Thelen (Cormac Hicks) and Magnus P Atlevi & Santiago Luna (Vipen Khanna). Playing well on both rounds of the Alliance, Vipen managed to finish in a fantastic tied 5th closing the week in a fantastic way. We’re already looking forward European Tour Destinations Senior Classic week!As the Staysure Tour continues to flourish, one of the fledgling events, the European Tour Destinations Senior Classic, was held at the stunning PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain from 11-14 July 2019.By Paul Stuart, Head PGA Professional at the LGC AcademyEUROPEAN TOUR DESTINATIONSSENIORCLASSIClondongolf.co.uk18

21The Members Mother’s Day Sunday Lunch was held on Sunday 31st March 2019 in the Restaurant Room. Members and their families were greeted in the Long Bar where they were treated to a Spoonful of Sugar pick-and-mix, before being escorted to their tables in the whimsically decorated Restaurant Room.A sweetly scented candle awaited each mum at their seat – a special gift to remind them they are practically perfect in every way. Each table enjoyed three courses of delicious food, including family-style sharing platter starters and Mary Poppins themed desserts.Mum had a great time. Always a good time there and always nice food. Mark CooperI wanted to highlight to you what a great job your team did with Mother’s Day Lunch. The service in the long bar was welcoming and friendly, the service in the restaurant was personalised and engaging. The menu was great, we really liked the idea of the sharing starters and sharing desserts. Please pass on Rachel and my thanks to everyone involved, from those decorating the rooms, to the team in the kitchen preparing great food on spotlessly clean crockery, to the bar staff keeping me going on Guinness, to the waiters and waitresses in the restaurant, not forgetting the events team for organising and anyone else involved who I have missed off. It was great to see every member of the team work together to ensure we all had a fantastic time - you must be extremely proud of them. 23There’s a place in South Africa that’s very special to Boodles: the world-famous Cullinan Mine.Anthony Wainwright – the fourth generation of the Boodle’s family – visited the Cullinan Mine east of Pretoria in the mid-1970’s and was astonished by some of the stones that he saw there. In diamond-lore, the Cullinan Mine is a real living legend: not only is it the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds; it’s also where the Cullinan Diamond was found in 1905. That’s still the largest rough gem diamond ever unearthed, at 3,106 carats. HOW OUR UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH PETRA BRINGS YOU STONES WITH A PRESTIGIOUS PROVENANCElondongolf.co.uk
24When Boodles current Director of Precious Gemstones, Jody Wainwright, was still a small boy, his grandfather shared his memories of the Cullinan Mine. A place of mystery, adventure and derring-do, it captured Jody’s youthful imagination. Jump forward a few decades, and following his own visit to the Cullinan Mine, Jody found himself in the unique position of being able to offer the Cullinan Mine’s owners a sparkling proposition. What if Boodles were to form a partnership, guaranteeing Boodles customers special access to diamonds from the Cullinan Mine? And thus, it came to pass. So not only can you own a beautifully crafted piece of Boodles jewellery; you can now say with certainty whether or not your diamonds were formed in the Cullinan mine. That’s the same mine, of course, that yielded Cullinan I; a 530-carat stone cut from the Cullinan Diamond mentioned above and placed in the scepter of King George V, as well as Cullinan II, a 317-carat diamond which is mounted in the Queen’s crown. Both can be seen today in the Tower of London. It's easy to spot a diamond from the Cullinan Mine. Whether it's in a necklace, ring, bracelet or earrings, it will carry the letter ‘C’ alongside the Boodles trademark. Think of it as a sort of ‘hereditary feature’; a reminder that it’s from this special place.londongolf.co.ukBoodles

IMG PRESTIGEThe site in Ifrane and for the Michlifen Golf & Country Club is one of the most scenic, beautiful vistas you will find for a golf experience. The property essentially sits atop Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains, and in an area well known for its skiing and charming Alpine-style architecture. The site for Michlifen is loaded with rock outcroppings and gorgeous trees, which give the golf course much of its personality and character. I am one who does not single out holes, and I certainly don’t believe in a signature hole when I have been given the mandate to create 18 equally spectacular holes. But when assessing these breath-taking views at Michlifen, they are truly taken into full breadth at Holes 9, 17 and 18Jack Nicklauslondongolf.co.uk26
From the moment you step onto the property, it’s clear that Michlifen is unlike anything you will experience anywhere else – in Morocco or any other country. Think of Morocco and you imagine scorched desert terrain and traditional North African souks and squares with narrow streets between dusty brown walls. You’re most likely thinking of Marrakech rather than Michlifen. Here, mountainous landscapes and lush green trees are more typical, alongside cooler temperatures more agreeable for playing golf. Confounding your expectations, the hotel itself has the look and feel of an Alpine chalet – a nod to the period of French influence (Michlifen means ‘snow flake’) and control that began in the 19th century and officially ended with Moroccan independence in 1956.As impressive as the architecture is, the real star is the course that Jack built. “The site for Michlifen is gives you the chance to hit great one of the most scenic, beautiful vistas you will find for a golf experience,” said the 18-time major in – often the result of mountainous winner. “I do not single out holes, and I certainly don’t believe in a signature hole when I have been given the mandate to create 18 equally spectacular holes. But when assessing these breath-taking views at Michlifen, they are truly taken into full breadth at holes 9, 17 and 18.” It’s hard to disagree with the great man because that trio of holes do indeed offer some of the most incredible views you will ever experience, it’s the quality, subtlety and variety of all 18 holes that really elevates Michlifen. Too many courses quickly fade from the memory, a blur of holes and tests that too easily merge into one When the round is over, the resort another. But every hole at Michlifen allows you to reflect on your remains lodged in the memory bank thanks to the quality and variety of the design. It forces you to think and make decisions and shots without being overly punitive budget allows. when the inevitable bad one creeps backdrops making depth of perception tricky. Select your club wisely as the ball flies further at altitude – good for your ego, not so much your scorecard. All 18 holes live long in the memory, but Jack perhaps saved the very best until last. One of the greatest finishing holes you may ever play, the fairway is bordered by a cliff along its left and tall, dense trees along the right. The second shot is semi- blind from an uphill lie, to a green that runs off in every direction. It’s a beautiful yet dangerous finish – a worthy exclamation mark on a wonderful layout. triumphs in the lap of luxury – five-star suites, spa and a choice of three world-class restaurants make it easy to extend your stay for as long as time and your MICHLIFEN INCLUDED ON GOLF WORLD’S 2019 HIT LISTMorocco has established itself as a leading golf destination in recent years, and the newly- opened Michlifen Resort and Golf Club has immediately thrust itself into the running to be the best course in the country. The layout was designed by Jack Nicklaus and, upon its official opening last October, was given the royal seal of approval by HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, who also doubles as President of the Moroccan Royal Golf Federation. It’s very easy to see why. londongolf.co.uk27
PERFECT LOCATION Managed by IMG and part of the IMG Prestige global network, Michlifen Golf & Country Club enjoys a fabulous location which makes it accessible for golfers from all around the world. Fes is a North-Eastern Moroccan city often referred to as the country’s cultural capital. It’s internationally known for its Fes El Bali walled medina, with medieval Marinid architecture, vibrant souks and old-world atmosphere. Michlifen is also easily accessed by air with Fes international airport just one hour away by car, offering direct flights to most of the main European cities such as London, Paris or Frankfurt. The golf course at Michlifen plays at a high elevation—over 5,400 feet or almost 1,650 meters—so it will be comfortably cool during the peak summer months, when much of the golf will be played. I just think once you take this very special mountain setting at Ifrane, and combine it with what we believe we have accomplished at Michlifen from a design perspective, it makes for a very unique, exciting and fun golf course to play.Jack NicklausMichlifen included on Golf's World's 2019 hit listlondongolf.co.ukFor more information and to take advantage of the special benefits & discounts through IMG Prestige, please contact the LGC Marketing Department on 01474 875702.28

It may have taken 68 years for The Open to return to Northern Ireland but it was more than worth the wait as home favourite Shane Lowry emerged triumphant at Royal Portrush. The man from the island of Ireland provided a fitting conclusion to a historic week on the County Antrim coast, thrilling the partisan crowds en route to claiming the prestigious Claret Jug.OPEN THE32londongolf.co.uk
It’s an incredible feeling. I just went out there and tried to give my best. And look, I'm here now, a major champion. I can't believe I'm saying it, to be honest.33londongolf.co.uk
Lowry had flown under the radar in the build up to The 148th Open as Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy attracted all the attention. But once honorary starter Clarke kicked off the first Open to be held outside mainland Great Britain since Portrush last hosted in 1951, the county Offaly native quickly came to the fore. The 32-year-old, who had missed his last four cuts at The Open, went into the weekend with a share of the lead with American veteran JB Holmes after carding impressive back-to-back 67s.He then landed a knockout blow on Saturday with a sensational bogey-free 63 – a course record for the new Portrush layout – to take a healthy four-shot advantage into the final round. And having set a new 54-hole scoring record for The Open, Lowry held his nerve in the wind and rain on Sunday to see off the challenge of Tommy Fleetwood and be crowned Champion Golfer. His final round of 72 was enough to complete a dominant six-shot victory over the Englishman, prompting the home support to swarm the 18th fairway to celebrate his memorable success.I thought about it all day but I didn't really let myself think about it until I hit my tee shot on 17. As soon as I hit that tee shot, I knew that I couldn't really lose a ball from there, and that's how I felt. It's just incredible to be sitting here with a trophy in front of me. Look at the names on it. I couldn't believe that it was me. I couldn't believe it was happening. The 149th Open will take place in Kent, more precisely at Royal St. George’s Golf Club, from 12-19 July. LGC Members will have the opportunity to book exclusive and official hospitality packages during the event. 48It would be fair to say that most amateur golfers would like to hit their tee shots further. After all more length off the tee should make the game easier. Reaching for a 6 iron instead of a hybrid on 400 yd par 4 approach shots would make the shot more manageable resulting in more greens hit in regulation. So how do we achieve more yardage without swinging harder?HIT YOUR DRIVERFURTHERWITHOUT SWINGING HARDER Increasing club head speed is a sure fire way to gaining more distance, but how can we increase distance without swinging faster?According to a Trackman study, the average male golfers driver numbers look like this:Clubspeed 93.4 mphLaunch Angle 12.6 degAttack Angle 1.6 degSpin Rate 3275 rpmCarry 204 ydsWe all have read that by hitting up on the ball with our driver is the best way to maximise distance. The key numbers here to observe are Attack Angle and spin rate. The Attack Angle is negative indicating a downward strike on the ball creating lots of backspin. If we can create a positive Attack Angle (hitting up on the ball) we can reduce the amount of backspin which will give more distance. londongolf.co.ukArticle by Paul Stuart, Head PGA Professional at the LGC Academy
49Figure 1 – Setup.First things first, get the ball position correct – opposite your left heel. You will see by adopting the correct ball position my spine angle has changed slightly with my right shoulder lower, this will help promote an upward strike.Figure 2Now to promote an upward strike I want you to imagine your hands travelling upwards through the hitting area. Place an alignment stick in the ground as shown above to help you visualise your hands moving upwards matching the angle of the stick.By studying the data provided by Trackman the following scenarios play out: londongolf.co.ukClub Speed93 mphAttack angle -1.5 deg 135.7 mphBall SpeedLaunch Angle11.9 degreesSpin Rate2707 rpmCarry 214 ydsLanding Angle32 degft15018012090603020406080100120140160180200ydft15018012090603020406080100120140160180200220ydft15018012090603020406080100120140160180200220ydClub Speed93 mphAttack angle 3 degBall Speed137.1 mphLaunch Angle14.3 degreesSpin Rate2288 rpmCarry 224 ydsLanding Angle34 degAttack Angle 3 (Upward Strike)As you can see by changing the Attack Angle from hitting down on the ball by -1.5 degrees to hitting up on the ball 3 degrees we achieve a gain of 10yds with a constant club speed of 93mph. A 7.5degree attack angle with a 93mph Club speed produces an increase of 18 yards.ft15018012090603020406080100120140160180200ydft15018012090603020406080100120140160180200220ydft15018012090603020406080100120140160180200220ydClub Speed93 mphAttack angle 7.5 degBall Speed138.3 mphLaunch Angle16.7 degreesSpin Rate1869 rpmCarry 232 yds Landing Angle36 degAttack Angle 7.5 (Upward Strike)As we already know an upward strike will increase distance gained so how can we achieve this. TWO BRANDS,CALLAWAY’S GROUNDBREAKING NEW EUROPEAN TOUR PARTNERSHIPONE FAMILYAt the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at the beginning of the year, it was announced that Callaway had become an official partner of the European Tour. While the Tour has had equipment manufacturers as partners previously, the opportunity was there to create something with a much broader reach. Nick McInally, Marketing Director at Callaway Golf explained how the deal was put together.50londongolf.co.uk
