Laura Sperber PRINCIPALS Partner Laura was raised in Highland Park, NJ. During high school, the coin bug hit her hard. Her trip to theBruce Morelan 1976 NYC ANA left a lasting mark and huge desire for her to own and handle the greatest rarities. Partner While attending Monmouth University, Laura attended coin shows more than classes. After college, she started LSS RCI, a wholesale coin company. In 1986, she realized the need for a “better” coin retailer and Julie Abrams teamed up in 1986 with George Huang to form Legend Numismatics. President In 1996 Bruce Morelan became a partner and since then Legend has exclusively built or assisted in assembling this generation’s greatest collections. In 2012 Laura saw the need for a smaller, boutique auction firm, and created Legend-Morphy with Dan Morphy, whom she split with in 2014. Today, Laura is also a leading consumer advocate for coins. The passion has never subsided, and she keeps a beautiful Proof Walker on her desk to this day. Bruce started collecting coins when he was only six years old and by the time he was in high school his dream was to be a coin dealer. But life intervened and instead, Bruce went into business. By chance, he became Legend Numismatics’ financial backer in 1996. His great grandmother had given him three coins when he was young, one of which being a Trade Dollar, so he set out to build the finest Trade Dollar set. After a few years with ultra rarities, Bruce returned to his love of dollars and completed both a set of Gobrechts and a set of Seated Dollars. After selling those sets, Bruce recently returned to dollars with a new Gobrecht set and a spectacular early dollar set capped by his dream coin, the Amon Carter 1794 Dollar. Not many collectors can say they have completed not only the finest 1794-1885 Dollar Sets and have over the years owned such coins as two 1913 Liberty Head Nickels, an 1894-S Dime, 1876-CC Twenty Cent piece, 1827 Original and Restrike Quarters, 1838-O Half Dollar, two 1885 Trade Dollars and four 1884 Trade Dollars! Julie Abrams started in numismatics in 1986 when she joined up with Bernard Rome and launched Teletrade, the first computerized auction company. Teletrade developed a unique coin trading method, utilizing state-of-the-art digitized voice board technology to run live auctions before the advent of the internet. As President of Teletrade, Julie helped expand the company, increasing the frequency of auctions and expanding annual sales to $24 million within a few years. In 1999, GMAI, a publicly traded company, purchased Teletrade and Ms. Abrams became Executive Vice President of Sales for the parent company. Her job responsibilities included continuing her role as CEO for Teletrade as well as marketing to buyers and consignors, with the goal of maintaining a balance between inventory and sales while growing the business. In 2004 she joined Stacks-Bowers, an old world traditional auction house where she worked to expand their e-commerce presence, including the development of an online bidding platform for the firm. She also marketed Stacks’ programs to secure consignments from dealers and institutions such as banks, museums and universities. Julie is a member of the American Numismatic Association, the Central States Numismatic Association and Florida United Numismatists. LOT 1 1C 1794 HEAD OF 1794 S-59 PCGS MS63 BN CAC EX NAFTZGER-REYNOLDS Just the names Naftzger and Reynolds should be an indication as to the quality of this beautiful early large cent. Steely brown luster shows light tan-gold in the protected areas of the well struck devices. Some light ticks are noted here and there, but blend nicely and are not noticeable without a glass. Middle to late die state for this R-3 variety with a couple of reverse die cracks, most prominent at the lower portion going through the fraction to the A in AMERICA. Depending on the EAC condition census you follow this is either 4th or 5th finest. Not only does this marvelous Choice Brown 1794 offer a great eye appeal, but it also boasts a great provenance going back to the early 1960s: Herbert Dietz Collection, Stack’s April 1962, lot 271; Stack’s October 1966, lot 46; Gilbert Steinberg, Stack’s 1976 ANA Auction, August 1976, lot 232; Del Bland; Herman Halperin Collection, Stack’s March 1988, lot 80, Ted Naftzger, 1990 EAC Auction, lot 27; Tom Reynolds Collection, Goldberg’s January 2016, lot 36. The lot tickets from the 76 ANA auction, the Herman Halperin sale, and Naftzger’s envelope are all included. PCGS 25, NGC 1, CAC 4. This coin sold for $29,375 in the Reynolds Sale, on an estimate of $40,000+; at the time of that sale, the market was very depressed, having succumbed to the triple whammy of plunging gold, oil, and stock prices. Since then, the market overall has firmed up and since there hasn’t been a major collection of Large Cents sold since, we think this coin should bring more today. If you are looking for a 1794 large cent for a type set, or need one for a date set, this exceptional coin will serve either purpose brilliantly! PCGS # 3539 | EST: $29,000+6
LOT 2 71C 1798 S-166. 2ND HAIR STYLE PCGS MS64 BN CAC EX NAFTZGER-REYNOLDSWhat an awesome early large cent! One of the worst kept secrets in all of numismatics is how much the principles at our sister company, Legend Numismatics, loves high end copper, and this coin is one that would appeal to even the pickiest of collectors. First, the luster swirls on satin smooth surfaces. Even medium brown shows hints of a lighter golden tone in areas. The strike is razor sharp throughout. Even with a strong glass, we cannot find a single spot or stain that would distract, but tiny abrasion is noted in front of Liberty’s bust. The obverse die was slightly misalignedshifting the design up towards 1:00. Struck from clashed dies, and the reverse has a heavy die crack that goes from E in UNITED through the wreath and arcs down to about 6:00. The extensive pedigree is as impressive as the physical qualities. Beckwith Collection (Chapman, April 1923, lot 17); Henry Hines; Dr. William Sheldon; Roy “Ted” Naftzger; Eric Streiner; Denis Loring; John MacDonald; Tom Reynolds Collection (Goldberg’s, January 2016, lot 162) at $18,212. This near GEM is ranked among thefinest, and depending on which census you follow, it fallssomewhere between CC#1 and CC#5; it is also plated in several of the major references on early cents.PCGS 7, NGC 1, CAC 5. For the 2nd Hair Style type, only 3 are finer in the BN color designation, none are CACapproved. This well preserved coin will serve wonderfully in an advanced type or date set. The current PCGSPrice Guide value is listed at $50,000. We think whoeverpurchases this near-GEM will have as hard a time putting it down as we have! PCGS # 36068 | EST: $25,000+ LEGENDAUCTIONS.COM
LOT 3 1C 1824/2 PCGS MS63 BN CAC EX ELIASBERG Scintillating steel and olive patina over smooth brown. Bold luster throughout both sides of this well struck CHOICE example of the over date. Under close inspection we can see some tiny marks but none that are distracting. This attractive large cent has been a part of three of the great collections of the 20th/early 21st century. Starting with the Louis Eliasberg collection, this coin sold as lot 556 in the B&M/Stack’s May 1996 auction. At the sale, Dr. Juan XII Soros bought this coin from the Eliasberg sale, and it was part of his collection that focused on overdates. The Soros sale was auctioned by Superior in February 1999. Gene Gardner ended up with this coin, where it sold in the sale of his collection, June 2014, where it was NGC MS63 BN without CAC approval. PCGS 5, NGC 3, CAC 2. The last PCGS example to sell was NOT CAC approved and realized $32,900 in the 2013 ANA auction. As mentioned above, this coin last sold in a non-CAC NGC holder, and sold for a decidedly soft $14,100 (it sold for $8,800 uncertified in the original Eliasberg sale). The current PCGS value is $36,500. Now that it has been crossed over to PCGS and is CAC-approved, there will be much more demand from specialized collectors in our sale. There are only 4 coins graded finer, none have sold. If you are interested in condition census, rare date large cents, be sure to bid liberally on this CHOICE coin. PCGS # 1639 | EST: $25,000+8
LOT 4 1C 1844/81 NEWCOMB-2. PCGS MS63 BN CAC EX DAN HOLMES COLLECTION A very choice example of this blundered date. The underdigits can be seen with the naked eye. Lustrous chocolate brownsurfaces show some satiny luster and tinges of subtle mint color can be seen with effort. The reverse has steely-olive overtones and it takes a strong glass to find even the slightest little tick. PCGS 2, NGC 1, CAC 1. Currently listed as # 6 in the Grellman Census, this is the Robinson S. Brown-Dan Holmes coin. It sold in the January 2011 auction of the Dan Holmes Collection for $6,325. All the pedigree info is included with this lot. This coin has graced two of the most famous collections of Large Cents, and it can now be yours! PCGS # 397722 | EST: $4,000+ LOT 5 1C 1857 SMALL DATE. PCGS PR66 BN CAC Wow, this SUPERB PR large cent has bold eye appeal. The devices are razor sharp, every minute detail in Liberty’s hair, isfully defined. The deep chocolate patina and chiseled strike give this GEM the look of a copper-bronzed medal struck at the mint during this era. Accents of azure and olive patina can be seen on the rich mirrors adding to the amazing eye appeal. Only 238 proof 1857 large cents were struck. PCGS 5, NGC 10, CAC 4. The most recent PCGS/CAC example to sell was graded PR65 BN and realized $8,813 in November 2013. No CAC approved PR66 BNs have ever sold in auction. The current PCGS Price Guide for PR66 BN is listed at $17,500. This GEM will surely attract much bidding activity when it crosses the block. PCGS # 2000 | EST: $10,000+ LOT 6 1C 1857 FLYING EAGLE. PCGS MS65A pretty MS65 example of the first year the small cent was struck for general circulation. A glowing tan-gold luster shines on both sidesof this well struck example. Consistent with the grade we note only a couple of insignificant hidden ticks. PCGS 236, NGC 226. The most recent PCGS MS65 to sell was in the 2016 ANA auction, realizing a price of $3,173. The CU value islisted at $4,250, which in the current market seems a tad high. This is a very pleasing coin and should bring around what the last 65 sold for. LOT 7 1C 1858 SMALL LETTERS. PCGS MS66 For the Small Letters variety, there are only 2 MS66+s that are graded higher at PCGS. This marvelous GEM has a vibrant cartwheel mint luster that rolls along icy-smooth surfaces. The design elements are expertly struck rendering razor sharp definition on both sides. Mostly a light copper-golden-tan, we can observe some deeper coppery hues. There is a single unobtrusive fleck on the obverse, near the eagle’s talon. PCGS 12, NGC 16. In January 2016, a PCGS MS66 sold for $18,800, and before that, in October 2014, one sold for $24,675. There are two MS66+s graded at PCGS, neither have ever sold in auction. The current PCGS Price Guide is listed at $24,500. If you are building a GEM set of Flyers or need one for a GEM type set, this beauty is well worth strong consideration. We think the bidding will really take off when this one opens for bidding. PCGS # 2020 | EST: $15,000+10

LOT 17 15 1C 1916 PCGS MS67+ RD CAC An AMAZING fiery, mint red cent! This spectacular GEM looks as fresh today as it did the moment it came off the dies. Were it not for a couple of TINY flecks, the coin would be fully flawless. The surfaces are silky smooth-there is only a touch of texture from the dies in the fields, similar to the orange-peel texture. Hints ofreflectivity and exceptionally bold details, suggest a very early striking in the life of this obverse die. PCGS 70, NGC 9, CAC 17. While there are 11 MS67+slisted on the PCGS Population Report, it is highly doubtful many look like this! The most recent example was sold in March 2016 and was NOT CAC; it sold for $5,405. LOT 20 1C 1969-S DOUBLED DIE OBVERSE. PCGS AU58 CAC One of the most important Lincoln Memorial cents, and among the KEYS in the entire series. The obverse is fully doubled. Well struck and the devices showing only the slightest rub on the high points, this PQ GEM AU is evenly toned in a mahogany-brown with some lighter brown and hints of slight blue highlights. The surfaces are smooth and show only the slightest little marks, consistent with the grade. It is a beautiful coin for the grade and would make a great addition to any advanced Lincoln cent collection. PCGS 16, NGC 2, CAC 3. The last PCGS AU58 CAC to sell in a MAJOR auction realized $30,550 at the 2016 CSNS auction, which sold previously in July 2013 for $28,200. LOT 23 1C 1916 PCGS PR67+ RB Mezermizing colors and astonishing quality and eye appeal. It is hard to imagine that a nicer looking RB 1916 Matte Proof Lincoln exists! In this coin’s case, we think the B in RB stands for blue, not brown. Rich brick red blends with magenta, violet and blue over sublime surfaces. It is the sole finest graded at PCGS, and for good reason; even after studying this MONSTER for several minutes with a strong glass, we cannot find a single fleck, tick, line, spot, or any other distraction anywhere. The Matte surfaces show a satiny sheen over the delicate sandblast surfaces. Lincoln’s portrait looks as though it was carved by hand by a very talented engraver, the details are bold, sculpted and razor sharp. Even the edges are perfect showing the high knife rim and are reflective. PCGS 1, NGC 0. This amazing survivor has never appeared at auction. There are 3 PCGS PR67 RBs, but none of these have ever sold in auction either. The most recent comparable is the PR66+ RB CAC that was in the McCullagh Collection sold at the 2014 ANA Auction for $30,550 that is now in a PR67 holder. The surfaces are problem free and totally original, looking about as nice today as the day itwas lovingly removed from the coinage press. After closeinspection, we found a single tiny line on the reverse and a minute fleck or two here or there. The RED surfaces show a great satin-like sheen that makes the little facets of the sandblast finish sparkle in the light. PCGS 5, NGC 2, CAC 2. No CAC-approved PR66 RDhas ever sold in auction.
