LOT 237 5C 1937-D 3 LEGGED. PCGS MS66 A magnificent example of this classic and famous 3-Legged Buffalo nickel. One of the most well known issues of the 20th century, even non-collectors have heard of this nickel. Bold and brilliant mint luster blooms all over on both sides of this SUPERB GEM. Satiny surfaces show off a soft, pastel blue, gold, and rose patina that accents the sharply struck devices. The fields and surfaces are smooth and free of any distracting marks or ticks of any kind to be found anywhere. This popular variety was created when an employee of the Denver Mint discovered that the dies were seriously clashed. In an effort to remove the clash marks, the inexperienced worker took an emery board and without realizing removed not just the marks, but also removed one of the buffaloís legs. PCGS 10, NGC 18. LOT 267 10C 1874 ARROWS. PCGS MS68 EX OLIVER JUNG To make it into the Oliver Jung Type Collection (the BEST EVER built), you know this coin was special. Basically, this coin is “as struck” like the day it left the bank! The surfaces are flawless. Some slightly irregular toning may look like a tick or two-but it is not-it is just toning. The texture is thick and satiny. A light luster can be detected. Both sides have a deeper crescent of original forest green/magenta colors that blend into deep champagne/pale green colors. Miss Liberty and the details are sharply struck. The eye appeal is excellent! PCGS 2, NGC 1. Here is an interesting set of auction data: the last PCGS piece sold in 2000, and the last NGC piece brought $40,250 in January 2008. Its multiple years later and the Collectors Universe Value is only $45,000. That is wrong. None have traded publicly, so there is nothing to go by. This coin is needed in many Type sets and probably MS Dime sets. We think a new market level will be set here. Good luck! PCGS# 4668 | ESTIMATE: $40,000+ 113
LOT 268 10C 1879 PCGS MS67 CAC This is a stunner! One of the higher graded examples at PCGS, there are just 8 coins graded higher of this date where only 14,000 were struck. Vivid flashy reflective luster blooms with a bold look. The sharply struck devices are thickly frosted and stand out with a cameo-like contrast against the fields. The obverse is framed by a brilliant gold and blue halo that accents the exceptional quality eye appeal. What a great coin! PCGS 28, NGC 24, CAC 14. There has not been a CAC approved example sold in nearly three years, thou a 67+ CAC sold in our November 2018 Regency Auction for $4,583. The eye appeal is amazing and this one should bring a very strong bid, and a total price in excess of the current Collectors Universe value of $3,250. Bound for a great set of dimes or type coins. It is a fantastic SUPERB GEM in every way, so much so that this coin was in the historic, all time finest type set of Oliver Jung. Deeply reflective mirrors beam from all over with a strong, bold clarity. Thickly frosted devices on both sides. The mirrored fields are the epitome of depth, clarity, and stunning black and white DCAM contrast. There is a touch of light tone around the date and corresponding area of the upper reverse. Needless to say the surfaces are as clean as you could ever hope to see. PCGS 1, NGC 0. There is no recent auction record for a PCGS DCAM in any grade. Indeed we have to cite PR68 CAMs as comps. The Gardner Collection coin sold in January 2016 for $17,625. In PR67 DCAM the Collectors Universe value is listed at $24,500. This is the FINEST DCAM and will fit in wonderfully in any high end set! LOT 270 10C 1874 ARROWS. PCGS PR67 The mintage of 700 Proofs is in line with other dates in the series, but for some reason, very few have survived in such a high grade. Indeed, this one is just one of two PCGS graded examples in PR67 with just a single PR67+ graded higher. Both sides of this GEM have a lovely iridescent patina with rich blue, rose, gold, and violet colors on both sides. The fields show off a wonderful watery reflection on the obverse, while the reverse has a blazing, bold, and blinding reflection that taken on its own would probably warrant a CAM designation. The strike is bold, and there are no distracting marks to be found anywhere. The eye appeal is very high end and extremely rare in such a fine state of preservation. The Arrows at the date were added, as they had been two decades earlier, to signify a weight change. The coinage act of 1873 raised the silver content of the dime, quarter, and half dollar in an effort to absorb some of the silver that poured from the Comstock Lode in Nevada. PCGS 2, NGC 1. The only auction records for a PCGS PR67 is for a CAC approved coin that most recently sold in June 2014 for $27,025 and the current PCGS price Guide value is listed at $28,500. PCGS 8, NGC 4, CAC 6. The most recent PCGS/CAC MS66 sold in the June 2014 Gardner Collection sale for $47,000. The Pogue collection had an example that brought $55,813. This one, with its impressive Jung Pedigree, will sell for a strong bid, likely in excess of current PCGS Price Guide value of $42,500. There is just a single MS66+ finer, which realized $55,813 in our October 2017 Regency Auction. This is a great type coin or high end example for the ultra high end early quarter set. LOT 297 25C 1834 PCGS MS64 CAC This is a gorgeous, Condition Census B-1; both modern censuses have a low grade of MS64. Though not listed on the insert, this is a popular Red Book variety with the O in OF punched over an errant F. Well struck from a clashed and cracked obverse die, the guiles from the reverse shield are boldly struck on Liberty’s neck and a bold arching die crack from below Star 1 to Star 13, across Liberty’s neck and drapery. The fields show a lovely, semi-Prooflike reflection to the luster that accent the sharply struck devices. Both sides have a great, old time collection color, shades of gold, lilac, slate, and olive-tan blend on the near-GEM caliber surfaces. The eye appeal is awesome! PCGS 43, NGC 35, CAC 12. There have only been three PCGS MS64 CAC sold in auction, the most recent sold in July 2015 for $8,225 and the other two brought more, clearly the Collectors Universe price of $6,500 was dragged down by non-CAC coins selling cheaply. With just 13 graded higher at PCGS, this date is VERY RARE and hard to find any finer, with any MS65 being worth $25,000 or more. Good luck! LOT 298 25C 1853 NO ARROWS. PCGS MS66 CAC This is a SUPERB GEM from a SUPERB collection. What a great looking, totally original beauty! Thick, satiny mint frost has a rich brilliance on both sides. The devices are sharply struck up with and stand out against the essentially pristine fields. The obverse shows a tinge of the most subtle clear gold and peach while the reverse shows off a deeper coppery-orange with hints of purple/blue at the rims. The composition of silver coins resulted in wholesale export and melting as the price of silver increased in relation to the price of gold, making the metallic value exceed the face value. An act of Congress in 1853 adjusted the silver content lower and the change was noted by Arrows at the date and a spray of rays around the eagle. Prior to the change, 44,200 quarters were struck from a single pair of dies. Between ravages of circulation and wholesale melting of the issue for bullion, this date is RARE so fine! The obverse die shows bold recutting of the 53 in the date. PCGS 8, NGC 3, CAC 3. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $23,500. This coin has been off the market for four years. It realized nearly $20,000 in the Gardner sale. Just a trio are graded higher, and the most recent to sell brought $32,500 in a November 2016 internet auction. This coin has a very similar look and we would not be surprised if it brought close to that in its appearance here. Worthy of an exceptional type or specialized Seated quarter set! Good luck. LOT 299 25C 1854 ARROWS. PCGS MS66 CAC From our September 2018 Regency Auction, where it was described as: “A beautiful Premium GEM of this short lived type. Exceptionally radiant mint luster glows on the ultra smooth and clean surfaces. The luster really does gleam from all over. The razor sharp devices stand out against the cleanliness of the fields. Both sides show a delicate and totally iridescent tone with shades of pale silver, lilac, gold and olive-tan toning. The eye appeal is spectacular and very high end.” PCGS 10, NGC 3, CAC 4. This coin brought $24,675 in the September 2018 Regency Auction. Our consignor, who is a major collector, has decided to change directions slightly and has consigned this beauty back to the market. LOT 302 25C 1884 PCGS MS67+ CAC What a magnificent SUPERB GEM. Tied for FINEST and fully Prooflike, we suspect that if resubmitted for a PL designation, this coin would get it (no guarantees). Aside from a minor reeding mark on the reverse, this coin is essentially flawless, and would have likely graded higher. The eye appeal is excellent. PCGS 37, NGC 12. Clearly this date does not come “nice” in this grade, as CAC has only stickered a single MS65 out of nearly 50 graded by both PCGS and NGC. The most recent example to sell in auction was an NGC-graded MS65 FH that brought $9,000 in September 2019. The current PCGS value is listed at $8,250. A seductively lustrous coin that has a vibrant brilliance that really catches your eyes as it traces over the bold devices. Light, dappled, multicolored, old envelope-like toning dances on the surfaces as the luster beams in the light. Blue, pink, and gold hues come out as you rotate this GEM in a light. Very lustrous surfaces have a touch of light blue and gold that can be seen when you rotate the surfaces in a light. Essentially every detail is sharply impressed, with all three leaves and Liberty’s hairline fully visible and all the shield brads are fully rendered. A strong glass reveals a few trivial contact marks, but nothing that distracts the eye. The visual allure is excellent. PCGS 10, NGC 1. LOT 322 50C 1808 PCGS MS66+ CAC One of the FINEST KNOWN 1808 half dollars of any variety and ranking at the top of the Condition Census for O-107a. This is a beautiful, totally original SUPERB GEM. Both sides of this early Capped Bust half dollar display a wonderful, dappled melange of olive, lavender, dove, and pastel gold; the mixture of hues, with their varied subtle shades are brought out by a vivid underlying mint luster. Sharply struck central devices stand out, despite the later stated of the dies that show heavy die flow to the peripheries as the dies wore from striking. The surfaces are generally very clean, and were it not for a single tiny line on Liberty’s neck, this coin could well have graded at an even higher grade level. Regardless of this very minor flaw, the eye appeal of this MS66+is VERY high end. Any Capped Bust half dollar in MS66+ is a rarity, but especially for such an early date. It is a miracle of numismatic survival that a coin of this work horse denomination escaped the ravages of early American commerce in such a PRISTINE state of preservation. PCGS 6, NGC 4, CAC 3. Neither of the two PCGS MS66+ coins ever sold in auction, but the Newman coin, which in 2013 was graded MS66+ CAC at NGC brought $52,875 (and we suspect it is the other 66+ on the Pop Report). HIGH Condition Census for the O-106 die marriage. Brilliant, bold mint luster swirls over clean and smooth surfaces when rotated in a light. The luster provides a back light to the wonderful deep blue, teal, violet, and gold iridescent toning. A strong glass reveals a tiny tick or two, but none distract. The strike is exceptionally bold with full definition of Ms. Liberty’s hair, drapery and cap. Even the dentils, which are characteristically weak on this variety are rather bold. Likewise the reverse is razor sharp in strike and free of any distracting marks. PCGS 4, NGC 19, CAC 6. The NGC Census data reflects all MS65 1811 half dollars, regardless of variety. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $17,500 and this GEM brought $19,388 in our July 2017 Regency Auction. Sharply struck up devices stand out against the smooth surfaces. Very high eye appeal, this early Seated Liberty half dollar is bound for a wonderful type or date set. PCGS 2, NGC 0. LOT 336 50C 1884 PCGS MS67 While Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco churned out silver dollars by the millions, the mintage of silver minor coins was miniscule in 1884. In deed, the mintage of half dollars for circulation was a scant 4,400. The present MS67 is among the top dozen PCGS graded examples and is a beautifully preserved and ultra eye appealing SUPERB GEM. Radiant, semi-Prooflike luster beams from below a layer of deep aquamarine and pale rose tones. The devices are especially sharp and frosty, giving this SUPERB GEM a great look. In addition, the surfaces are wonderfully clean and well preserved, lacking in any major mark, line or fleck anywhere to be seen. PCGS 8, NGC 7. The most recent non-CAC example sold in auction over a year and a half ago, bringing $9,000 and the current PCGS value is listed at $13,500. We really are not sure why CAC did not sticker this SUPERB GEM, but take our word, the quality and eye appeal are all there! PCGS# 6366 | ESTIMATE: $8,000+ LOT 337 50C 1857 PCGS PR64 CAC These early Seated half dollar Proofs are VERY RARE in all grades, but for some reason, the current market has put these wonderful numismatic treasures on sale. The present PR64 displays exceptional watery reflective mirrors that beam from all over, and creates a wonderful, almost cameo contrast against the frosted devices. A dusting of marble- textured multicolored earthtone toning gives shape and form to the well executed striking from the dies. There are a few tiny lines, which account for the assigned grade. The eye appeal is quite nice. Only 50 are estimated to have been struck. PCGS 14, NGC 12, CAC 11. (Clearly the population is inflated with resubmissions and crossovers). The Gene Gardner coin was the last one to sell in auction, selling for $14,688 in May 2015 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $11,000. LOT 338 50C 1870 PCGS PR66 CAC One look and you can easily tell this coin was carefully saved since the day it left the Mint! We consider the quality VERY HIGH END! Super mirrors are deep and beam vividly from all over. The mirrors have good clarity and are super clean. In fact, there are more lines on the holder than the coin. When you twirl the coin, you see mirrors that are totally sleek and icy. Both sides enjoy a totally original mix of pale olive/blue/violet/gold colors. Miss Liberty and the details are fully struck and have thick toned frost. The eye appeal is delightful! Only 1000 Proofs were struck. PCGS 5, NGC 7, CAC 3. The last auction record for a PCGS CAC piece selling is $6,600 in April 2019 (not this coin), and the current PCGS Price Guide value is $6,500. PCGS# 6428 | ESTIMATE: $6,000+ LOT 339 50C 1899 PCGS MS67 A totally original, very high end and lustrous SUPERB GEM! The extremely clean surfaces are of superior quality and offer a thick, satiny lustrous mint bloom. The luster is unbroken as you rotate it in a light. Clearly this coin sat undisturbed with the reverse in contact with whatever holder, imparting a moderate blend of olive/reddish gold/gold/pale blue hues, while the obverse is more of a pearly silver with champagne-gold and pewter-tan accents. Miss Liberty and the details stand out with crisp sharp strikes. The eye appeal is excellent! Even using a strong glass we cannot find any distracting anything, and we think perhaps the slightly uneven pattern of the tone is all that kept CAC from awarding this impressive, condition census SUPERB GEM a green bean. PCGS 2, NGC 1. The only PCGS example to ever sell was a CAC coin that last brought $20,000 in the 2015 ANA auction (Greensboro Collection, ex Dr. Duckor, where it originally sold for $34,500!). The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $25,500. Just a single coin is graded higher, making this a fine addition to any high ranking PCGS Registry Set. Upgrade your 1899 today! LOT 343 50C 1917-D REVERSE. PCGS MS65+ CAC A beautifully preserved and high end GEM that boasts a great look. The 17-D Reverse mint mark variety is a MAJOR Condition Rarity; rare in MS65 and finer, as here, are excessively so. A bold satiny luster shines on both sides, amplifying the delicate pearly-gold tone that graces the brilliant silver lustrous silver surfaces. The strike is very bold with full definition to Liberty’s thumb and nearly full lines on her gown. A few tiny ticks are noted under strong magnification, but they do not detract from the stunning, high end state of preservation and bold visual allure. PCGS 51, NGC 22, CAC 9. There are just two coins graded MS65+ at PCGS and just a handful of coins are graded finer. The other MS65+ sold for DOUBLE the current PCGS value of $21,500 in the 2018 FUN Auction, realizing $43,200. This SUPERB example is stunning and will bring a very strong price when the hammer falls.
