An important coin, hailing from one of the greatest silver dollar collections of all time, the Amon G. Carter Collection. A Proof only date, and struck during the first year that Proofs were struck for sale to the general public, the mintage was quite low. While no official record was kept, the oft sited mintage of less than 80 was apparently told to the Chapman Brothers by Patterson Dubois, an employee of the Philadelphia mint. Today, the most recent mintage estimate, reported in the Osburn Cushing reference estimates 275 originals and 35 restrikes. Both sides of this VERY CHOICE 1858 dollar show off glassy mirrored fields that have a flashy reflection, especially when rotated in a light. Lovely peripheral toning, showing shades of gold, blue, amber-orange, and rose, with a slightly angular pattern, which is almost a signature for the Proof Seated Liberty dollars from the famed Carter Collection. A strong glass shows some light hairlines in the fields, which are all that keep this really attractive coin from a CAC-bean. Amon Carter was, among other things, the publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and a director of American Airlines, as well as on the board of the Texas Rangers Baseball team. CTHUELLEN B. COLLECTION Named for our consignor’s young grandson who loved these “shiny” big coins, the collector set out to assemble as high a quality set, with the goal of all PCGS and CAC coins, and they had to meet his standard for eye appeal for the issue. Buying coins out of auctions, at local coin shows, off eBay, and from well known dealers, the collector worked hard to assemble a nice collection of Morgan dollars. While not a complete Morgan dollar set, the Cullen B Collection is extensive, offering not just most dates and mints, but also includes numerous Red Book listed varieties, VAMs, and a DMPL or two as well to keep the offering interesting and varied. With most coins in the $1,000-$5,000 range, the Cullen B Collection shows that you do not need to spend huge sums to assemble a really nice, and personally meaningful collection of Morgan dollars. 166

LOT 475 $1 1884-O PCGS MS66 DMPL CAC This is an exceptional GEM DMPL 84-O dollar. For the date, this coin has dramatically reflective, deep, flashy mirrors that beam a full 8” on both sides. PCGS# 7172 | ESTIMATE: $6,000+ LOT 482 $1 1887 PCGS MS66+ DMPL CAC Our sister firm, among other areas, has always specialized in DMPL Morgans, in fact, years ago, when the late, great Jack Lee was selling his DMPL collection, he selected Legend Numismatics to handle the deal. So we all know our stuff about DMPL’s! All these years later, LRCA is proud to offer this 1887, the single FINEST DMPL graded at either service. Deeply reflective, highly polished fields have bold, clear mirrors that beam from all over. The sharply struck devices stand out dramatically with a wonderful, thick frost. While the mintage was high, with over 20 million struck, relatively few were struck from the early, polished state of the dies with this level of contrast and depth to the mirrors. There are some tiny traces of contact, nothing that affects the stunning visual allure! PCGS 42, NGC 16, CAC 5. This is the ONLY MS66+ DMPL graded at either service, and it is VERY high end. None are graded finer. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $7,500. PCGS# 8952 | ESTIMATE: $2,500+ LOT 484 $1 1889-O PCGS MS65+ PL CAC Despite a mintage of nearly 12 million pieces, the 89-O is a rare date in GEM Mint State, especially so with any kind of Prooflike reflection. Blazingly lustrous surfaces gleam with a flashy reflective brilliance on both sides. The devices are sharply struck and nicely frosted, esepecialy the cheek, which is remarkably clean and smooth. There are no breaks in the frost and there is just the barest trace of any kind of contact anywhere to be found. This is the epitome of what a GEM PL should look like. PCGS 10, NGC 3, CAC 4. This is the only 65+ in the PL designation and there is just a single coin finer. Neither have sold in auction. The last regular MS65 PL sold in auction over a dozen years ago, making its price realized irrelevant. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $9,600. A non-PL with CAC approval in MS65+ sold in September 2019 for $7,200. This PL GEM is worthy of a very strong bid. PCGS# 7193 | ESTIMATE: $8,000+ LOT 485 $1 1890-CC PCGS MS65+ CAC The 1890-CC dollar is quite rare in GEM, with fewer than 500 graded in MS65 or finer at PCGS. In MS65+, PCGS reports 51 graded, (though that likely includes multiple duplicate submissions hoping to make a 66). In MS66 PCGS the 90-CC is a major Morgan dollar rarity, with a mere 20 graded total in over 32 years of grading operations! This is a brilliant GEM! Blast white, this impressive, high end example has a thick mint frost that is amplified by a vivid rolling cartwheel luster. Sharply struck up, the devices stand out boldly against smooth surfaces. PCGS 435, NGC 78, CAC 53. PCGS has graded 51 in 65+ and 20 in 66. There have been 10 PCGS/CAC MS65+s sold in auction, the most recent bringing $9,600 in September 2019. We sold two: one in December 2017 Regency Auction for $9,400 and one in December 2016 for $9,988. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $9,700 and we know this impressive coin will join their ranks. We sold a non-CAC MS66 in May 2019 for $30,550, so this CAC-approved MS65+ is an incredible value for the advanced Morgan collector, who does not want to break the bank for a marginally finer piece. PCGS# 7198 | ESTIMATE: $7,000+ 196
LOT 486 $1 1891 PCGS MS65 A wonderfully toned and totally original example of this date that rarely comes with any kind of color. Some softness is seen, as usual in the central devices, but the definition is generally bold and the surfaces clean. The olive and azure hues are brought out by a GEM luster, imparting a great look. PCGS 245, NGC 107. Extremely RARE any finer. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $2,500 and with its eye appeal it could well bring more than that. Bound for a nice set of toned Morgans. PCGS# 7204 | ESTIMATE: $2,500+ LOT 487 $1 1891-CC VAM-3. SPITTING EAGLE. PCGS MS66 This is a very rare grade for the 91-CC dollar. What makes this coin even rarer is that it is wonderfully toned and totally original. The eye appeal is really cool! The VAM-3 is easily identified by a tiny die chip in the field below the eagle’s beak. Both sides are awash in blue and amber-rose toning that gives this coin a great look. Displaying the typical bluntness in the central obverse, the eye appeal of this GEM is great. PCGS 40, NGC 10. Just 8 coins are graded finer. The most recent example to sell in auction realized $16,800 in March 2019, and recently they have sold for as much as $19,200. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $21,500. This coin is very rare any finer., and becomes very pricey any higher. Worthy of a very strong bid. The 91-CC is quite rare with any color and this one will attract strong bidding. PCGS# 7206 | ESTIMATE: $14,000+ LOT 488 $1 1892-CC PCGS MS65 A strong satiny mint frost is brought out by a light on both sides of this impressive GEM quality 92-CC. Virtually untoned silver surfaces show a sharp strike on both Ms. Liberty and the eagle, which both show a thick frosty texture. The eye appeal is excellent, we are not sure what CAC saw that prevented a bean. PCGS 415, NGC 167, CAC 73. The most recent PCGS-graded example brought $5,040 in the 2019 ANA auction and one sold in July 2019 for $4,811. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,000. RARE any finer, only 97 have graded finer, and there has to be duplication in those figures, as most are MS65+. This is a pleasing GEM worthy of a great set. PCGS# 7214 | ESTIMATE: $4,200+ 197
