MESSAGE FROM THE TRUSTEE Advocate (Dr.) Laxman Kanal BA, LLB, LLM, PhD (Law) Trustee In-charge VES College of Arts, Science & Commerce I congratulate our Principal Dr. Anita Kanwar, editorial board, faculty members, non-teaching staff and the students who have actively participated in making this remarkable and informative college magazine. Our College is achieving greater heights year after year and is presently one of the well-known colleges of Mumbai. It has been rated as one of the best  Urban colleges by University of Mumbai and awarded for the same. It has also been accredited with an ‘A’ grade by NAAC. I congratulate the students for their talents, dedication and able participation in Academics, Cultural activities and Sports. They have won awards in the University Youth Festival, State level as well as National level competitions and thus brought acclaim to the college. Our college has a long way to go by producing more and more competent students who will make a name for themselves and for the college and prove to be shining personalities of the country, with maximum contribution  to society and the Nation. I encourage all our dear students, faculty members, non-teaching staff and Principal to pursue a greater vision with a common goal of success.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE The academic year 2018-19 has been a roller coaster ride for VESASC. On one hand, many of our students and staff members achieved success through their dedicated efforts while on the other hand, our Guide and Mentor Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Jayashree Phadnis retired on superannuation. Under Phadnis madam’s able leadership of more than a decade, our college has received several accolades and attained horizontal as well as vertical growth by introduction of several UG, PG and Ph.D. courses. Carrying forth her legacy of hard work and success, we are continuing to march ahead to score permanent imprints in the educational journey of Vivekanand Education Society with renewed energy along with a harmonious and cohesive team and excellent work culture of our staff members. Vivekanand Education Society faced an irreparable loss with the sad demise of two of our stalwart members, Mr. Ram Keswani (Ex-president VES) and Mr. K.D. Ahuja (Trustee VES), whose contributions to the upliftment of the college are immeasurable. This year numerous activities were conducted by almost all the departments. Academic festivals were successfully conducted with a focus to sharpen students’ skill in subject related areas and to make them confident for the world of work. Both students and staff members participated in extension activities like NSS, LLE (Lifelong Learning and Extension) and Outreach cell activities. The Science Mela, as a part of DBT star college scheme activity to promote Science Education, attracted a record number of schools and students this year from far and nearby institutes. The college hosted several seminars/workshops on topics ranging from academics to acquiring life skills in different areas of specialization. The research culture is strengthening its roots day by day with several teachers having obtained the Ph.D. degree, contributing to improvement in their qualification and developing expertise for further facilitation of research activity at VESASC. Besides presentation of award winning research papers at seminars /conferences by the teaching fraternity, it is also very satisfying that students have bagged prizes for research paper presentations on several occasions. \"A DREAM DOES NOT The hard work put in by students and efforts of teachers were fruitful in BECOME REALITY the college receiving many awards. This year the college received the Green Campus award for exemplary and continuous efforts for initiating THROUGH MAGIC; IT environment friendly practices in the campus. The Department of TAKES SWEAT, Economics sent student contingents to three Economics festivals i.e. Arth Utsav (Nagindas Khandwala College), Arth Gyan (R.J. Jhunjhunwala DETERMINATION College) and Arth Manthan (Acharaya College) and made us proud by AND HARD WORK.\" winning the Best College Award/ Trophy at all three! Medals were won at university/state/national levels in various sports and intercollegiate activities. To conclude: We need to work as a team, adopt newer techniques and methodologies, and change with the times while holding firmly on to our values, to realize our dream of creating responsible citizens committed to working for the nation. Colin Powell Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Anita Kanwar

F A R E W E L L to Dr. (Mrs.) Jayashree Phadnis Whether it was the mysterious world of bacteria and cellular pathways, or the mundane one of admissions and examinations, Dr. Jayashree Phadnis was able to straddle both with poise and confidence. Having taught Microbiology at VES College for 39 years, she was a veteran in her subject. A passionate teacher, she loved her Biochemistry lectures as much as she enjoyed steering the college through various NAAC assessments. She served as the Vice-Principal of the college for 10 years and Principal for 11 years, evolving into an able administrator and visionary leader. Her views on education were shaped not only by her enormous personal experience in the field, but also her doctoral studies in the subject. During her tenure as the Head of the institution, the college earned several laurels. VESASC was declared ‘Best College (Urban Area)’ by Mumbai University in 2012-13. Besides, it was awarded an ‘A’ grade in two successive NAAC assessment cycles. The Science departments of the college received two prestigious grants - the Star College grant amounting to 55 lakhs from Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and the FIST grant amounting to Rs. 81 lakhs from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Dr. Phadnis was a sensitive and caring person who instinctively empathized with others, a quality that bonded her to people with strong ties. She was generous and prompt in her appreciation of sincere efforts by staff and students alike. Her small yet powerful gesture of wishing every staff member on his/her birthday with a personal letter endeared her to many. Yet she also had a strong moral and professional code which gave her the courage of conviction to deal firmly with erring students and staff. Her systematic approach to work and meticulous attention to detail were truly commendable. It did not matter whether it was a lecture, practical instruction, quick staff meeting or proposal before a panel of experts, Dr. Phadnis ensured that she had looked at things from every angle and was thoroughly prepared. The Magazine Committee had a firsthand experience of her meticulousness, as she unfailingly discovered errors even in the final proof of the magazine which had already gone through multiple rounds of proofreading! Having spent 39 years in the college, Phadnis Madam dedicated most of her life to building up VESASC. Though her graceful presence will be missed immensely by both students and staff, we wish her a wonderful and fulfilling retired life.

Congratulations! Principal Hearty congratulations to our new Principal Dr. Anita Kanwar! Beginning Dr. (Mrs.) Anita Kanwar her association with the college as a B.Sc (Physics) student, Prin.Dr. Anita Kanwar has come a long way indeed! Graduating from the college as University topper in Physics in 1989, she pursued her Masters from Mumbai University, and rejoined the Physics department as a faculty member in 1993. She has contributed to the subject for the past 26 years, not just as an excellent teacher but also as a researcher with various publications in reputed scientific journals and a patent to her credit. She was the main driving force behind the prestigious DST and Star DBT grants obtained by the college. She served as NAAC coordinator of the college during its 3rd cycle of accreditation, which gave the college an A grade. Her role in the college administration was further entrenched with her appointment as Vice Principal in 2015 and Principal in 2018. Principal Anita Kanwar is sure to take the college ahead with her pragmatic and systematic approach to all situations. VESASC salutes its young and dynamic new captain, as it steers towards newer horizons and greater achievements! Prof.(Dr.) Vasant D. Hearty congratulations to Professor Dr. Vasant Barhate who has been Barhate appointed as the Principal of C.K.T (Changu Kana Thakur) College, Panvel. Prof. Barhate has been a strong pillar of the Chemistry department since he joined our college in 1987. He was the pioneer of scientific research in V.E.S. College, with more than eighty research publications in reputed national and international journals to his credit, besides successfully guiding 8 Ph.D, 6 M.Sc and 3 M.Phil students. He played a significant role in the growth of the Chemistry department and was instrumental in shaping the careers of hundreds of students through his long and illustrious career. Prof. Barhate is loved and admired by one and all, not just for his academic prowess or research contributions, but also for his generosity and courteous manner. He was always accessible, seated in his research lab, offering help and advice (as well as something to munch on) to anyone who approached him. He was a constant source of guidance and inspiration for his colleagues and students alike, who will miss him immensely . We wish him success and happiness in his new and well-deserved appointment.

RETIREES KISHOR DICHWALKAR With a rare combination of wit and firmness, Mr. Kishor Dichwalkar was the friendly 'KD Sir ' for the students of Accountancy. For the staff of the college,  he was the unofficial 'tax guide', who could be approached for any tax related queries, or as the discriminating member of the annual audit team. Systematic and organized in his teaching and all other work, he was an asset to the college as well as the management. A good table tennis player and an avid planned traveler, we wish him more leisurely travels as he enjoys his retirement. V.T. JOHNSON The staff room came alive with his presence - that was Mr. V. T. Johnson for you.  His magisterial  personality and roaring voice kept him in the limelight in the staff room as well as in all the college activities. He retired as the Head of the Commerce Department where he taught for 32 years. He was at the helm of the Examination Committee for more than 4 years, during which he ensured the smooth conduct of all examinations. Maintaining discipline came naturally to him, whether during Talentia and Sports or any other college event. Food supply was another of his enjoyable activities, be it sharing his delicious South Indian breakfast in the staff room, providing a steady supply of 'munches' (especially Kerala banana chips) during assessment time, or assuring 'good eating' in  every staff meeting  in his role as Staff Secretary. We wish him good health and a comfortable retired life.

RETIREES SULEKHA GOPINATH Music and Physics, a magical combination...just ask Ms. Sulekha G. and she will enlighten you on both passionately. During her three and a half decades in the institution, she, in her quiet way, balanced her academic and administrative duties with ease. She was part of the Steering committee for the first NAAC peer team visit and captained the Dept. of Physics for 9 years. A self- effacing  person who let her actions speak for themselves, she shunned the limelight, being the sincere backstage worker who preferred to set the stage for others. She was the teacher you approach with your doubts, the friend who would patiently listen to you and help find solutions, the compere who could convey much in few words ... the list could go on. Her friends and colleagues will vouch for her baking skills. As she takes a break we wish her lots of time to enjoy her reading, baking and needlework. OBITUARY V.T. JOHNSON MR. RAJU GULIK

But there are a few students whose life is far tougher, who battle adversities and yet manage to not just excel in studies but find the time and emotional energy to give back to society. The most admirable aspect is that these young people do not allow life to turn them bitter. Hence, Vivekanand Education Society (VES) celebrates World Students' Day by felicitating nine such students from various VES Colleges, who have displayed grit, leadership and values, while also working towards academic and extra-curricular excellence with the Shreshthta Award. These students have been handpicked from the VES group of institutes comprising 28 institutes and approximately 18000 students. In 2018-19, Ms. Malathi Yadav (TYBSc. Mathematics 2016- 19 Batch) and Mr. Ashok Yadav (TYBMM Journalism 2015-18 Batch) were awarded this VES Shreshthta Award. 5
