BURTON ALBION FC FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/FOOTYFOCUSMAG The Customer John Bowler’s is one of the largest producers of Lion Code Free Range Eggs in the UK and have approx. 2 Million laying hens on contract. With over 150 farms and 33 years experience in the Free Range Egg market, they offer an established franchise operation. Their electrical contractor (RayBat Limited) wanted to improve the design of their existing control panels used to control the internal environment as well as feeding and other functions of the chicken units. The Requirements Improve reliability Simplify operation Generate alarms Improve automation The Approach was to use the flexibility of modern PLC and HMI equipment to achieve these goals. This was chosen over a bespoke electronic design despite this application being cost sensitive because the cost and features of ‘off the shelf’ control equipment have become more favourable and scalability, flexibility, reliability, speed of development and ease of maintenance. This also opened up a world of potential options and features which would also mitigate additional hardware costs. Given the potential and that ideas were being constantly added to the spec RayBat were happy to contract our engineer on a time basis to work alongside their staff on the solution. A large share of RayBat was bought by Bowler’s who then contracted Truvolution directly. The ResultThe completed system runs almost every aspect of the chicken units. Many previously separate systems like bird weighing and feed weighing are now integrated. The original requirements have been blown away and many additional ideas incorporated.Using custom made graphical icons the HMI gives a very simple graphical user interface with a common theme that needs a minimum of text for a user to understand and follow.Every important aspect is now alarmed, saving problems from turning costly before they are resolved and additional features like remoteaccess to allow a farmer to remotely monitor and control their system from a mobile phone or computer. This also enabled Bowler’s toimprove their support to farmers. The system generates a wealth of data that is communicated back to Bowler’s server and used for statistical analysis, to support the farmers and improve production efficiency. The BenefitsThis modernisation and the data produced gives both Bowlers and their farmers a market advantage by allowing them to reduce losses and maximise efficiency of production. Not to mention keeping their livestock healthier and minimising environmental impact. As with many of our customers, Bowler’ssubsequently asked Truvolution todevelop another system for use in a different market.10 ISSUE 52

Initially, my style is that I want to control the ball and the game and see what we can do with that.” Jimmy’s football career has seen him play in Holland, Portugal and Spain as well as being awarded the Premier League Golden Boot for finishing top scorer in England’s top flight during spells at both Leeds United and Chelsea. So was it always an ambition to manage in English football after his playing days ended? “Not straight away,” he says. “But it’s something I began to look at and it now seemed right to come to Burton. Club Secretary Julian French took the time to talk to Football Focus Magazine. He started by explaining how he got involved with the club, saying, “In the summer of 2013, I was watching a pre-seasonfriendly at the AJN Stadium safe from the knowledge that thatnight would change my life! As I was watching the game, thegentleman next to me started chatting to me and said that hehad noticed me at games before. When I mentioned how muchI loved the amateur game, he asked me if I would like to getinvolved with the club. That gentleman was our Chairman, Malcolm Trainer. I joined theclub’s committee and now, 18 months on, have the honour ofbeing Club Secretary. Together with Malcolm and my close friendAdrian Cole (Vice Chairman), we watch as many of the seniorsides’ games home and away as we can – the only disappointmentis that on a Saturday afternoon, when we have 2 or 3 KeynshamTown sides playing, we cannot be in two places at once!”The Role“Whilst we have a committee of something like a dozen volunteers, one of the club’s biggest problems is a lack of able bodies onhome match days. There are many jobs we have to do, suchas looking after the match officials, running the gate, retrievingfootballs that disappear out the ground, preparing hospitality forour guests and cleaning the changing rooms post-match.We also sell raffle tickets, run the club’s own “snack table” inthe clubhouse and carry out other fundraising activities after thegame. On a good day, we may have 4 or 5 committee membershelping out, but as soon as someone is away on holiday, we arestretched. However I feel very much part of the team with the players andmanagement. We have an excellent spirit within the club andalways have a good laugh after the game; when we have a positiveresult, I like to think that in some small way, the committee’s effortsin making the lads feel valued have contributed to the victory.”This Season“The start of the season was traumatic and we parted companywith our manager at the end of August. THIRSK FALCONS FC FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/FOOTYFOCUSMAG of footballers in Thirsk but also for the community itself from the various elements coming under one organisational structure – Thirsk Falcons Community Football Club. Talks between the senior and junior management structures are currently underway with a view to making the concept a reality and to providing a seamless transition from junior football to senior football by the establishment of an academy type structure. Whilst there is a substantial will to make these changes happen, the main issues impacting on Thirsk Falcons Community Football Club becoming a reality is the current lack of available, suitable land in and around Thirsk to accommodate both the seniors and the juniors. There are plans for a new multipurpose sporting facility in the town which incorporates floodlit 4G pitches and a sports pavilion however this only partially meets the needs of football and does not provide enough pitches or facilities to accommodate such large and growing football clubs. Both club’s continue to seek sufficient land to provide a much needed home for Thirsk Falcons Seniors and Juniors which can provide the much needed space for senior, junior and mini football pitches, a club house with changing rooms and leisure facilities, plus standing or seated areas for supporters and all the associated maintenance and grass cutting equipment etc. Given the challenging task of organising and administering such dynamic organisations, those involved have set themselves a period of 5 years to make the concept of a Thirsk Falcons Community Football Club a reality. This will undoubtedly then provide a safe and secure path for our up and coming youngsters to carry on into the senior team to continue to develop their footballing skills, attitudes, values and behavior, both on and off the field of play. This vision will not only benefit Thirsk Falcons Community Football Club but it will also benefit the community itself as young players turn into responsible adults and hopefully become our coaches and mentors of the future to continue the legacy of footballing excellence in Thirsk. www.thirskfalcons.org.uk48 ISSUE 52
