DR.D. N. SINGH, Principal, Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur The 26th August, 1966 The provisions for Technical Education in the Fourth Five YearPlan envisage furtherstrides towards achievement of our. aim of a highorder of Technical Education in all respects by consolidation withrespect to physical facilities and qualita tive improvement as the maintargets. The fulfilment of the above requires sacrifices and devotion to dutyof the students and teachers alike and I do hope that the students ofthe Regional Engine ring College, Rourkela will not be laggingbehind in their efforts in these and will rather set an example forothers to follow. (IOWA, M.I.E.Principal&Secretary, Board ofGovernorsRegional Engineering College, Rourke/aThe 17th December, 1966 When you came to the College, you were only teen-agers. You arenow going out as young Engineers. You oweto this College for thistransformation. You will repay the debt only when you utilise theknowledge impartedto you, for the good of the country and for thewell-being of the society. During the period of your stay in the College you were onlyinitiated into the Theory of Engineering Science. You have now topractise the application of this science yourself, without the day today guidance of teachers. Face the future with courage, determination and selfconfidence. Remember that a duty well done gives greater peace ofmind and happiness than any amount of money that. you may earn inthe profession. My blessingswillalways bewith you. B.BEHERA 33

s.DR. H. NAGABHUSHANIAH, Professor&Head of the Department ofAppliedMechanics &Hydraulics, Regional Engineering College, Rourkela 8 The 26th November, 1966 'Tradition'in the view of an Engineer isan equivocal term. Anengineer has to maintain the tradition of professional ethics, dignity and honour. But certainly he need not follow the traditionsof Engineering methods and findings of his ancestors all the times.New methods, easier and simpler approaches to problems, new andbetter designs etc. should sprout at ali times. Research andoriginality should be the motto. Research and tradition areincompatible. Acceptance of the traditionalmethods withoutquestioningisa crime. Let the Engineers know the limitations of'Tradition'well if.they want to build better world. H. S.NAGABHUSHANIAH 35

s.DR. K. RANGASAMI, Head of the Department ofCivil Engineering, Regional Engineering College Rourkela The 24th August, 1966 1. Be a better engineer by studying deeply and under standing all the details of your work.2. Try to help sincerely, those who seek your help.3. Be yourself as example of the virtues you expect in others. K. S. RANGASAMJ 36

(INDIA), Professor &Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering,RegionalEngineering College,Rourkela 8 The 19th October, 1966 Ifeel very happy to give my first message to the final year students'Souvenir of our College. I am sure our students will play a greatrole in the developmentof our country by their sincere and hardwork. There has been a tendency now-a-days among the youngengineers to belesssincere and more ostentatious. I want our studentsnot to tread this path but to be honest, sincere and efficient Iwish them all success in life. L.N.M ISR A 37

J.BANERJEe Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department,Regional Engineering College, Rourkela-8. The 16th December, 1966. A fewmonthslateryouwouldcommenceyourengineering professionand you would be eager to see your ambitions fulfilled. DR. K. J. R. SARMA, M.SC. (TECH.), Ph.D., A.M.I.I.Ch.E., DepartmentofChemical Engineering,RegionalEngineeringCollege ,Rourkela-8. The 26th November, 1966. You are very fortunate as you are graduating at the right momentwhen your Nation requires your services to overcome some of herdifficulties. Under this roof you have learnt the basic principles onlyand now it is your turn to learn much more about the practicalapplications. c.P. PANDA,Professor of Training &Placement Students' Welfare,RegionalEngineering College, Rourkela-8. I am glad to know that the third volumeof \"Souvenir\" is comingtolight withconsiderableimprovement. Thiswill strengthen thegood relationship between the students andteachersandIamquitesureabout it.Asregardstherole ofourengineersinthedevelopment programmesof our country, it hardly requires any emphasis.Quitealargenumberofcomplicatedand expensiveengineeringprojectsare beingenvisagedin various fiveyear plansand it is uptoour out-going students to work out these porjects efficientlyandemancipate the people from poverty and starvation. P.c.PANDA41

DR.T. RATHO, Professor, Head of the Department of Physics, Regional Engineering College, Rourkela-8. The 18th October, 1966. Itis a great pleasure to see the third batch of Engineers passingout of this Institution. They have to face the tasks awaiting them inthe practical world with courage and dignity. With the back groundoftraining attained bythem Ihope they will solve the problemsfacing them in the most befitting manner. Iwish them all a verysuccessful career. T. RATHO 42

DR.D.V.RAMANARAo, M.S.c., Ph.D. (London),Professor &Head ofthe Department ofChemistry, Regional Engineering College, Rourkela-8. The 14th September, 1966. You had learnt and assimilated a lot of Engineering Science duringthe past four years and no doubt some of you may perform difficultfeats in Engineering in the coming years and enhancethe prestige ofthe institution and contributesubstan tially to the growth of ourcivilisation. But do not forget that the ethical guidelines of religionare the bonds that hold our civilisation. In our modern world, many people seem to feel that our rapidadvances in the field of Science render religious beliefs untimely orold-fashioned. Remember that while man istrying to learn more of themysteries of creation throughscience, he can know the Creatoronlythrough religion. Aswelearn more about nature,we are more humbledby its unerringperfection and acknowledgethe presence of a superiorrationality behind our very existence. Let this consciousness be always with you from this very momentand serve as a guiding start for leading a righteous and purposefullife. v.D. RAMANARAO 43

DR.S.P. MISRA, M.sc.,PH.D. (London),Professor&Headofthe Department ofMathematics,Regional EngineeringCollege, Rourkela-8.The 8th 1966.The Engineering Students of today willbe in charge of im portantprojects tomorrow. This is particularly true of Orissa, wheresmrieprogress has been made, but much remains to be done, andenormous natural wealth is yet to be tapped for realising ourambitions of a rich and prosperous India. Wedonothavearailwaylinkatpresentjoiningthe hugeindustrial complexesof Orissa and Bihar with Paradip, the deepest portofNationalimportancewhich earnsforeignexchangeforus. Enormousamount of rich iron ore is to beexploited. Some of you, Engineers, will handle such and many other projects of National importance. Some of you willalso be employed in very useful but not spectacularprojects. The facilities you gethoweverwillalwaysbeinadequate, buttakeitasachallenge to you, not as an apology. The Engineers haveto make our country richer, not by begging wealth or talent, but byhard work and continuous endeavour. We can be rich by yourcalibre and self-confidence, by the resoucefulness and freedom towork of thepeople like you whocreat wealth. Mustn't wegivesomething toIndia, to the generations that willcome, forthemtoliveabetter lifethan wedo, and begless? s.P.MISRA44

Itisalways a pleasure toseestudents passout of an institu tion aftercompletion of their studies; and it is a matter of pridetoseeyoungmenpassoutoftheirinstitution asEngineers, with zeal and determination toembark upon the world. A nation likeours expects muchoftheseyoungmen in theshape of self-less and dedicated service. One only hopes that the students of the Final B.Sc.(Engg.)Class,whenthey go out of thisCollegeasfull-fledged Engineers, willprove worthyof this trust reposed in them.
