LET’S SUMMARIZE The phrases shall buy, will work, will fly and shall go express future actions. Use shall & will + the simple base present form of the verb to tell future time actions. The verb phrase is the future tense. Ex. will + visit or shall (simple present tense in the base form) For negative statements, will not is shortened to won’t. Shall not is shortened to shan’t but this is seldom used. Ex. He will not go. - He won’t go.Also bear in mind that time markers are used to denote future actions. LET’S STUDYIf you would be rich someday, would you share your wealth to the poor?The story that you are going to read is about a rich man.Find out what he wants to be. There was once a rich man who wanted to enter the kingdom of God. He asked several wise men in his town, but nobody could tell him what he will do. An old man told him about Jesus, the Great Master. “Why don’t you go to Jesus?” the old man said. He will tell you what to do. The rich man followed the old man’s advise. He looked for Jesus. One day he met Jesus. The rich man ran to meet him. He knelt down in front of him and said, “Master, I am a rich man. I wanted to enter the kingdom of God. What must I do?” Jesus answered, ”You should follow the commandments of God.” The rich man said, “ I have followed the commandments of God since I was a boy.” “Then give all your riches to the poor and follow me,” Jesus said.

Do you think the rich man would follow Jesus?What do you think will he do? This story does not have a good ending. It does not tell whether the rich manfollow Jesus or not. If you are reading a story without a good ending, you will be the one to predict orthink what will happen to the character or characters in the story. Here are some situations which could be a possible outcome of the story. A. The rich man went away and left Jesus. He said, “It is difficult to enter the kingdom of God.” B. “Why should I give my money and property to the poor? I have worked hard to become rich.” he said. C. The rich man was happy to hear what Jesus said. He was willing to give his riches to the poor.

Here is another story. It was barangay town fiesta in Cabuyao, Laguna. A magician was invited toentertain the people. Everybody was excited to see what the magician will do. The magician went up the stage. “Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,” he said. “I am Carlo Magno the great,great grandson of Mariano Makiling.” “Look, what I have,” he said. He showed to the people a white handkerchief, a 30-inches stick and some piecesof paper. “I need someone to help me. Who would like to come up the stage and help me?”he asked. Andro, a twelve year old boy raised his hand and said, “I will.” Andro went up the stage.

It is done by getting information and other details present in the text and using them toguess for what succeeding events could be. The Frog and the Cow One cool day, three little frogs were sitting near the bank of a river.They were waiting for Father Frog. After a short while, Father Frog arrived. One little frog told him what happened that day. A large animal had come to the river to drink water. This strangeanimal had two horns and a long tail. When it saw us, it said, “Moo,moo,” said the little frog. “Don’t be foolish,” Father Frog croaked. “That was just a cow. She isnot so big as she seems. I could easily make myself that big, Watch!” Father Frog took a deep breath and blew himself up until he becamebig.

“Was she as big as I am now?” asked Father Frog. “Oh no, Father Frog. She was much, much bigger.” Father Frog took another breath. He blew and blew himself to become bigger. “Look now,” he said as he stood in front of the little frogs proudly. The little frogs shook their heads. “You are not as big as the cow,” they said. “Just wait and see,” said proud Father Frog. “I will show you how big I am.” Father Frog took the deepest breath he could take. He blew himself until his whole body swelled and swelled. All of a sudden, Father Frog burst. His body lies flat on the ground and could no longer move. The Goose and the Golden Egg There was a farmer who had a poultry farm. He had chickens and geese in his poultry farm. Every morning, he goes around in his farm and sees to it that his pets have enough food to eat. One day he saw something shining in his goose’s nest. He touched it and to his surprise he found out that it was real gold. “Somebody had played a joke on me,” he exclaimed. He got the gold and showed it to his wife. His wife told him to keep it. The next day he found again another golden egg. He didn’t believe that his goose would be laying golden eggs. He got it and brought it to his home. The following day, he got up early. He went to his poultry farm and watched the goose. When the goose left the nest, he found again another golden egg. These time he believed that his goose was laid a golden egg. He was so excited and he told himself, “Soon I will have plenty of gold.” That night he could not sleep very well. He was thinking of the goose that lays a golden egg every day. He wanted to become rich immediately. He thought of a plan on how to get all the golden eggs. He thought of killing the goose. “By killing the goose, I can get all the gold in his stomach,” he said. I will sell all the gold that I could get and soon I will have plenty of money. I will be a millionaire.” With a sharpened knife on his right hand, he caught the goose and cut off his head. He opened the stomach thinking that he can get all the gold. Do you know what he found? NOTHING. There was no golden egg. His dream of becoming rich was not realized.Test yourself by answering these questions orally.Where did the story happen?Who are the characters in the story?When did the story happen? The answers to these questions will tell you the place and time when the story happened and the important characters in the story. These is the setting of the story. The setting is usually found at the beginning of the story.

As you read a story, there are events or happenings that took place. Can you remember what these events are? The most important event is called the climax. The climax is followed by the ending of the story. In this story, the most important event is when the farmer killed the goose. This is the climax of the story. The story ends telling us that the farmer didn’t get rich. His dream was not realized. After you have read a story and you want to relate it to your friends or members of your family, can you do it? Of course you can.In order to help you in retelling or writing a story, remember the following:First, have a good beginning sentence or paragraph that gives the setting of the storySecond, the plot or the events that happened in the story should be organized in their order of events.Third, it should have a good ending. Following the above pointers, you can retell or write a story you have read. When you aretelling a story orally or when you write one from what you have read or heard, you are makinga summary. A summary should be brief, but it should have all the important parts of a story. Study this summary of the story, “The Goose and the Golden Egg” One day a farmer found a golden egg in his goose’s nest. He could not believe of what he saw. He thought somebody had played a joke on him. He brought the golden egg home. The next morning he found a golden egg again. He found out that his goose lays a golden egg. Then he thought of getting all the gold in his goose’s stomach. He killed the goose, but there was no golden egg inside its stomach. The farmer felt sad for losing his goose that lays a golden egg.Try to answer these questions by yourself to find out if the summary is a good one.Does the beginning sentence give us the setting of the story?Are the important events mentioned in the story?Is the climax stated clearly?Is the summary clear? If you answered Yes, then you are right. The sentence below will prove that your answeris right. The beginning sentence tells us the place where the story happens and the characters in thestory.

“The farmer killed the goose thinking that he will get all the gold.” This is the mostimportant event in the story. This is the climax. The summary is clear. There is a good beginning that gives the setting. The story endsright after the climax. Keep in Mind - A good summary must be brief. Only the important events should be included. - It should have a good beginning and ending. - The climax could be easily identified that signals the ending of the story. PRACTICE TIMERead this story. The Doctor Who Was DaydreamingA doctor was sitting on his easy chair in his room reading a book.

He wanted to be alone. He didn’t like to be disturbed. While he was reading he heard the sound of a cat. He didn’t know where the noise came from. He ignored it, but the sound grew louder and louder. The cat continued to growl and the doctor could no longer take it. He called his attendant. .“Paulo, come quickly. Look for the cat and drive it away.” Paulo didn’t say anything. The doctor continued reading. The cat continued to growl. He got mad and shouted at Paulo. “Paulo, throw the cat away or else I’ll throw you out of the window.” Paulo answered in a soft voice. “Sir, the cat is on your chair.
