After we talked for a while, she finally got around to asking me that age old question; “And, what is it that you do?” Without skipping a beat, I told her that I helped women make money with their businesses online. Impressed, she asked me to help her and to set up the online part of her business. We then exchanged phone numbers. The conversation didn’t feel strained, and things didn’t get weird. It was an easy transition into talking about making money online, because I already had a down-to-earth elevator pitch ready to go. What is an Elevator Pitch? According to an article written on Forbes by Nancy Collamer, it’s the 30-second speech that summarizes who you are, what you do, and why you’d be a perfect candidate. She said that you should be able to reel off your elevator pitch at any time, whether it be for a job interview or during a cocktail party conversation. Keeping this in mind, I think that elevator pitches should also be able to go beyond what you say to people in person. I highly recommend that you format your brief and persuasive pitch, so that it can be seen by your audience online. I had a “superhero’ perspective where I wanted to save the world. I had this one mission…and it turned out to be a lie. I was working exhaustedly to save people, and eventually hit a wall that I just couldn’t walk around. Saying that 200 calories of spinach is the same as 200 calories of soda is dead wrong. A calorie is a measurement of energy (a matter of physics), not a value judgment on where that energy goes (a matter of biochemistry). If we want to talk about health, we should think about it in biological terms - not physics - because the human body is a complex machine that does not work simply by math (counting calories). It is time to find out the five reasons why a calorie is not a calorie: 1. Fibre The first example why a calorie is not a calorie can be explained by the fibre content of foods. When we eat foods such as vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts, we are getting a lot of fibre, which is a form of carbohydrate that contributes to satiety without contributing to the calorie content because it isn’t absorbed into the body. For instance, when we eat 160 calories of almonds, we only absorb 130 calories because fibre in the almonds delays absorption of calories into the bloodstream, delivering those calories to the bacteria in your intestine, which “chew them up.” Therefore, a calorie inside a high-fibre food item is not equal to a calorie inside a low-fibre food item.
