UNIT 4 GETTING TO YOUR DESTINATION Several million tourists come to Thailand every year because of its world-wide reputation for various attractions, especially friendly people. However, one of the reasons visitors choose Thailand is that of their infrastructure which includes convenient transportation. Tourists can choose to get to their destinations easily, fast, cheap or expensive depending on their demands. Therefore, learning basic vocabulary and expressions required in any situations associated with traveling to or around the country is very essential. Besides knowing what words or expressions to say about transportation, providing tourists with general information about traveling from a place to another tourist destination including prices and travel time is undoubtedly important. This unit will give a picture of several modes of transportation this country can offer to tourists. Picture 4.1: Skytrain Source: (Bangkok Skytrain, 2017: 3)

91 Read the following passage giving information on transportation available in Thailand. Thailand is a modern country. It has several modes of transportation to offer to tourists: planes, ships, boats, ferries and ground transportation like buses, vans, cars, trains, and even a special type symbolizing Thailand, the Tuk-Tuk. Moreover, there are other modern types which are very popular among people in the capital city, sky train (BTS), and subway (MRT). Neither of these modes are available in other cities. Nevertheless, the government has some plans to build more of them in major tourist cities in the near future. Besides, Uber and Grab which have recently merged into the same company are available in big cities though have not been officially allowed in Thailand. They seem to be popular among people in the cities. Task 2.1 According to the passage above, read the sentences below and decide which statements are true or false. Write ‘T’ in front of the ones which are true, and write ‘F’ in front of the ones which are false. True or False ______1) There are several types of transportation available for tourists in Thailand. ______2) Tourists cannot travel by Tuk-Tuk. ______3) BTS and MRT are available in major tourist cities now. ______4) Uber and Grab are officially available in Thailand. ______5) Tourists can travel by Uber or Grab in only big cities though it is illegal. ______6) The transport that symbolizes Thailand is Tuk-Tuk.

92 Task 2.2 Read another passage about transportation in Thailand and then complete each statement with the information in the text. There are various options of Thailand travel provided for tourists – by land, by air, and by boat. However, traveling on the road is the main procedure going through provinces in Thailand. Public transport: either long-distance or short-distance trips in Bangkok or other provinces, tourists can travel around by bus, by train, by sky train, by subway, by van, and by Song Taew (small pick-up truck with two rows of bench). Taxi: Bangkok and big provinces have metered taxis. Tuk Tuk: a three-wheeled motorcycle which becomes a symbol of Thailand and can be found around Bangkok and in some provinces. Motorcycle Taxi: motorcycle taxis can be found near street intersections or small allies for quick transport and short distances. Rental car and motorcycle: visitors who want to have independent travel or do not want to waste their time waiting for public transport can rent a car or a motorcycle from local companies as well as international chains. Some companies also provide a driver for tourist’s convenience and safety. Vehicle rental companies can be found in big cities, airports, and bus or train stations. Traveling by car, motorcycle and bicycle is quite convenient for tourists because there are traffic signs available both Thai and English languages. Boat Thailand has two long coastlines – the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman coast islands. Also, there are many rivers and canals in Thailand including in Bangkok which once was called ‘the Venice of the East’. The long-tail boats are a main transport on rivers and canals in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. Visitors also have a boat trip or river cruise in Bangkok or a trip for snorkeling, fishing or squid fishing in other provinces. Air There are many domestic air routes in Bangkok and provincial capitals. Two main airports in Bangkok are Don Mueang Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport. Moreover, for those who want to have more privacy and independence, they can rent a private plane. (About Thailand, 2016: 5)

117 Read the passage about types of accommodations available in Thailand. When traveling, the first thing people think about is a good place to stay. Fortunately, there are numerous different levels of luxury for tourists in Thailand to take a pick, from sleeping in a 5-star luxury hotel to renting a tent in a national park. Most of the time it is best to book in advance, and tourists can do this very easily since there are many reputable booking websites to search for information before making a reservation. The price and type of accommodation is related to its location and the time of the year. Bangkok and major tourist cities boast of some of the best and most luxurious, while modest and simple rooms are more common in small towns and remote areas of the country. November to February (cool season) is considered the peak period when prices are the highest and less at other times of the year. This phenomenon is common in major tourist cities of the country except in Bangkok, where prices remain relatively fixed due to its regularly high occupancy rate throughout the year. Luxury hotels in Thailand boast of meeting international standards while being renowned for their unbeatable hospitality and services with elegantly furnished rooms, modern amenities, and excellent recreational facilities. Similarly, resort hotels offer excellent services with amazing, scenic views of their surroundings whether of the azure blue waters of the South or the rolling hills and forests of the North, as well as a wide variety of entertainment and superb cuisine.
