37 2. READING Read the following passage about the main kinds of tourism in Thailand. The Tourism Authority of Thailand ( TAT) works hard to help promote our country’s economy in line with the Thailand 4. 0 strategy, which aims to transform the country into a value-based economy through innovation, knowledge, technology and creativity. Since we had more than 30 million visitors in 2016 and would like to remain a prime tourist location in the future, learning about different types of activities and interests of tourists is beneficial for our national tourism. Therefore, we can group different types of interests into various types of tourism as follows: eco-tourism -- holidays spent in nature while supporting the need to protect the natural environment, leisure tourism -- holidays that are relaxing and fun, budget tourism-- holidays that don’t require much money, and adventure tourism-- exciting and possibly dangerous holidays. Other types are culture tourism-- holidays for people interested in arts, traditions or customs, and sport tourism-- holidays spent doing physical, competitive activities. Moreover, we have business and convention tourism-- short holidays after finishing meetings or conferences, and sex tourism-- holidays spent with the intention of buying sex such as in go-go bars and massage parlors. The latter type is not legal or even acceptable in Thai culture but it is quite popular in black markets. Furthermore, there is outbound tourism-- holidays spent traveling to other countries, and the last one is the kind of tourism which is very popular nowadays, niche-market tourism-- a special and even unusual type of holidays such as the medical, wellness, health-check, honeymoon, and even cooking class tourism. All

41 The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has released its Market Plan 2017 aiming to turn the country into a sustainable tourist destination where quality is preferred over quantity. The aim is to promote Thailand as a ‘Preferred Destination’ that will attract quality leisure tourists from around the world by incorporating Thai culture into tourism promotion. Both on international and national level, Thailand is positioning itself as the tourism hub of Southeast Asia by promoting new markets as well as the niche markets, such as the medical, wellness, honeymoon and sports market. Medical tourists come to Thailand for a wide variety of treatments. Aside from medical treatments and curative medicines, the country is also popular for health and wellness checks, massages and traditional medicines. Medical and health tourism are key components of the market strategy plan of 2017 to increase the numbers of tourism and spending in Thailand. To stimulate this sector and attract more tourists, the staying period for medical treatment for patients from China, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam has been tripled to 90 days. For adventure tourism, there are various kinds to enjoy; on water, land, and air. This type of tourism includes exploration of exotic locales and remote areas as well as several adventurous activities. According to the official website of the TAT, various major adventure tourism activities promoted are caving, trekking, elephant trekking, waterfall abseiling, white water rafting, mountain biking, snorkeling, sea kayaking, zip-lining, and skydiving.
