ABC DE Mr Phearith: Pollution is a global issue and everyone should be aware of it. For example, some lakes around the world have been polluted by local oil reineries. If oil spills into the environment from these reineries, our lakes will be polluted and all of the wildlife will suffer. If the oil industry educated all of its employees in the latest clean-up techniques, the problems caused by these oil spills would be far less damaging. Piseth: When I went on holiday recently, one of the lakes I visited was heavily polluted with plastic products. If we dump our plastic products near our lakes, they will suffocate and kill the wildlife. If everyone disposed of their plastic products safely, the environment would be a much safer place for animals to live. Heang: When I visited a lake near my hometown it had been polluted by waste water. If the water from household appliances is pumped into our lakes, it will affect humans if they eat ish from the lake. If everyone used environmentally friendly household cleaning products, it would help to solve the problem. Vuthy: Some of the most polluted spots on earth have been contaminated by nuclear waste from nuclear facilities. If nuclear power plants break down, they will pollute water systems and contaminate the ish that live there. If the world’s governments banned nuclear power, the world would be a safer place in which to live. Miss Mom: There are lots of factories near my hometown and some of them pour chemical waste into the lake. If the factories pour waste into our lakes, it will deplete the oxygen and kill the wildlife that lives there. If governments imprisoned the owners of factories who did this, the water would be cleaner and our wildlife wouldn’t die. 2 Form for irst and second conditionals. Unit 27 - Cardamom Mountains 27a Cardamom Mountains – The dangers of deforestation 1 Heang is talking about the dangers of deforestation. « Read and match the numbered sentences with the pictures. We need to stop cutting down trees in the Cardamom Mountains. A B Deforestation is a serious problem because forests and trees C D aren’t just pretty to look at, they do an important job making the E earth’s environment suitable for life. 1 If we lose too many trees, the wildlife in the area will die. Trees also clean the air, store water, preserve soil, and provide homes for animals. 2 So, if we continue to cut them down, it will affect the water we drink and the air we breathe. They also supply food, fuel, wood products, and paper products for humans. 3 So, if we allow deforestation to continue, it will also affect the food we eat. In the past ifty years, more than half of the world’s rain forests have been destroyed. Today, the forests of the world are being cut down at a rate of ifty acres every minute! 4 Scientists say that if deforestation continues, the world’s climate will change. 5 They also claim that if we don’t tackle the problem, loods will become more common, and animals will die. 2 Read the story in activity 1 again. What would happen if we used less paper? b. What would happen if we reduced our paper use? c. What would happen if we reused old paper? d. What would happen if we recycled all of our used paper products? e. What would happen if deforestation continued at today’s rate? One solution to the problem of deforestation is to use less paper. 1 If we used less paper, fewer trees would be cut for paper making. How can you use less paper? 2 If we reduced our paper use by using both sides of the paper when we wrote a letter, we would use a lot less paper and save a lot of trees. A second answer is, 3 if we reused old paper, we would also save the trees and wildlife in the forests. The backs of old envelopes are perfect for shopping lists or phone messages, and when you write a rough draft of an essay, write it on the back of something else. 4 If we recycled all of our used paper products instead of throwing them away, we would also protect the forests and our environment. For my class project, I interviewed Pisey about her trip to the United States last year. There were a lot of questions that I wanted to ask her. Pisey told me that she had traveled to California with her family last year. I asked her why she had gone. She told me she had traveled to California to visit her Aunt Sokna, Uncle Panha and Cousin Sam. I asked her if she had ever gone to the United States before. She told me it had been her irst time outside of Cambodia. I asked her if she had been scared. She said she had been nervous when they arrived, because the airport was so large and crowded. She said she had been afraid to make a mistake. I asked her what her irst feeling of the US had been. She told me her irst feeling had been that everything was big. She said even that the serving sizes of food were 2-3 times larger than they were in Cambodia. I asked her if she had tried any new types of food. She told me one food she had tried that she enjoyed a lot was a burrito. She said it was meat, rice, vegetables and cheese that was wrapped into a lat type of bread. She told me her brother had liked them so much he had eaten one every day until they returned to Cambodia. After talking about food, we discussed some of the places she had visited while in the US. I asked Pisey where she had visited that had left an impression in her mind. She told me it was in Los Angeles when they had visited the Hollywood sign. She said it stood high up on a hill and when she had looked down, she could see all across the city. She said she could see the ocean on her right and the mountains on her left. She told me the Los Angeles Zoo was the most amazing zoo she had ever seen. She said there had been so many animals she had only seen in pictures, like penguins and polar bears. Finally I asked Pisey how California compared to Cambodia. She told me it didn’t, because Cambodia was so small and California was so big. She had said however that her Uncle Panha had told her that some days it would be hot or rainy like Cambodia. But he also had said that most days it was just a nice day, and the sun was shining and the sky was blue. At the end of the interview, Pisey had asked if she could ask me a question. I said she could. She asked me why I was so interested in her trip to the US.
