Dear Mum and Dad, I am writing this from Phnom Penh, the most populated city in Cambodia. I have come here to do some sightseeing. I want to buy a few things I can’t get in Pursat, too. There are as many things to see here as there are in Tokyo. The irst thing I saw when my bus was coming into town was Independence Monument. It is the biggest monument in Phnom Penh. Cambodia’s most famous architect, Vann Molyvann built it to celebrate the country’s independence from French rule. I also visited the National Museum of Arts. It has the largest collection of Khmer objects in the world. On my second day in town, the owner of the guest house where I was staying told me one of the best places to visit is Silk Island. He said it is the closest and most beautiful rural setting in the area. I took a boat cruise to get there. I was happy that I did, I think it is as stunning as the Pursat countryside. Many of the people on the island earn their living weaving silk. They live more simply than people in the city and they are some of the most friendly people I have met here. They allowed me to sit at one of the silk weaving machines to try it out. It is the hardest thing I have ever tried. Mum I bought you a silk scarf that is made better than any you own now. When I returned, I went to Central Market to buy a few other things. It has the widest variety of goods in Phnom Penh. I bought everyone else’s souvenirs there and probably cheaper than I could have any place else in the city. Not everything is safe and beautiful in Phnom Penh. The trafic is worse than New York City and probably the worst I have seen in any large city I have visited except Bangkok and Jakarta. However the owner of my guest house told me that Phnom Penh has one of the greatest food delivery systems in the world and suggested that I call and have food delivered to the guest house. I am glad I did. I will write again later. Love, Naoko 70 A trip to Phnom Penh
