You had to Severn School’s THERE 105th Navigator is an encapsulation of everything that happens throughout BEthe school year. From dressing yourself in your grade’s color on the last day of Spirit Week to supporting your friends in the winter musical, dull moments at Severn are rare, and it is important to be where your feet are, stay present, and get involved with the School. Our vision for this year’s Navigator is to incorporate the 2018-2019 adaptive challenge of “Be There” by portraying our community through a nostalgic lens with a modern design twist that captures the essence of every moment from the year. The primary and muted colors covey a feeling of the past, and the vibrant photos will transport you back to “Being There” for years to come. By preserving the memories formed here at Severn School in this yearbook, we want to emphasize Sincerely, the importance of the many special Your Chief Editors, Cynthia Eid ‘19, Jordan Cox ‘19, and moments that made this year unique, and Marina Bradley ‘19 to highlight how everyone came together to support our community. 1

Heads of School What was your BE THERE moment of this year? Mr. Lagarde: My “Be There” moment this, and every, year is Convocation. The opportunity to kickoff the school year with all faculty and students collectively celebrating the start of another year has an energy and promise that no other day of the year has. Also, watching our youngest students sit and spend the morning with our seniors connects the community from top to bottom, creating lasting bonds and memories. Ms. Fuller: First, I have to say that I have many “be there” moments every day and week because I love attending all of the Severn events – everything from attending leadership labs, observing classes, cheering at athletic contests, watching plays & musicals, trivia night, international dinner and on and on. I love to be part of this community as we live our values every day. Mrs. North: My “BE THERE” moment resonates with me each day at the Lower School. For me, “BE THERE” is being present and engaged each day. It’s about making connections, valuing relationships, and celebrating the big and small moments that happen along the way. It brings great joy to see students greet one another, read and write stories, reflect upon their learning, sing songs, and share kind exchanges in the classroom and on the playground; as well as to hear and see the collaborative spirit among faculty who work together to support all students. Mr. Keller: There are always many school days that can “be there” moments. But I would have to say that year after year, the moment I love most is the beginning of the year when we come together as one school at Convocation. I am full of pride as I see the middle school faculty fully energized and equally proud of our middle schoolers who are beaming with potential and joy. When Mr. Lagarde asks the different classes to please stand, it is surely great to “be there” with the prideful students. How do you feel that the Severn community has been there for you over the year? Mr. Lagarde: The support the Severn community provides is both tangible – for example, a kind word or support gesture - and intangible – for example, being empathic and trusting – which makes students and adults want to Be There for each other. Ms. Fuller: I feel the support and hard work of the entire community in that we aim to be -- and build and grow as -- a strong, intentional community of learners and community members. I am proud of our incredible commitment to bring our best selves to the classroom, the stage, the fields, and to our service work. There are so many examples of our working together to include others and create times to bring our school together. While we have annual classroom activities, sports teams, plays, our Upper School build/read, Spirit Week, Trivia Night, Hoop Madness, etc., this year’s Unity Day will remain one of the most inspirational times in my tenure. We, students and teachers, created an engaging full day of conversations designed to share our stories, connect to one another, and bridge differences. Framing the day with a special week of events from Mix it Up at Lunch and a presentation about Chinese New Year, we culminated the week with our annu- al international/multicultural dinner. Rather than just thinking how folks have been there for me, I see myriad examples of us all being there for each other! I am so proud of all of you. Mrs. North: Similarly, I value the entire Severn community. This community is dedicated to putting students first as well as supporting one another to make things happen for our students. I appreciate how everyone wants to “BE THERE” for our students. The dedication from the adults speaks to love, joy, and laughter in the school house. Mr. Keller: The Severn community has been there for me over this year in many ways. For example, Severn is quite literally my home—I live on campus with my family, and we love to be part of the community, to go to the games, the art performances, dodgeball madness, and many other great events. I feel a tremendous amount of support, as well, from the middle school faculty, as we started a new academic schedule this year and new exam program. The faculty and staff in our Middle School is nimble and open to change to create a better learning experience for our middle schoolers. 4

The seniors are especially thrilled, as they have the opportunity to host the kindergarteners and first graders. During the assembly, Danielle Drury ‘19, Rohan Lakhanpal ‘23, and Emma Patrick ‘26 welcomed the students, teachers, and faculty to commence the school year. As each grade was introduced, they stood up proudly in the crowded gymnasium, welcomed by cheers. After the assembly, the seniors welcomed their lower school friends to the library of the Teel Academic Center, where they read “This Book Just Ate My Dog!” Every Severn School student was surrounded with joy as the 105th year of school began.
