Review Exercise 1. Read the given paragraph and answer the questions: Status of senior citizens in population management An individual who has crossed the age of 60 years is called senior citizen or old aged. The population of the senior citizen is increasing because of the availability of health practitioners and medicine but the population of the children is decreasing due to the child birth control, education and family planning. As a result, the population of the children is less than the population of the senior citizen. If the population of the children at present is less, it may cause the shortage of manpower in the future. Hence, everyone has to bear its consequences in coming days. The senior citizens were the active youths in the past. The present society is well prosperous because of the active roles played by the senior citizens in their lifetime in constructing structures, inventing means and technologies and creations. Senior citizens also can contribute a lot for the society. We have achieved the benefits from their work done in the past. Therefore, it is our duty to provide the opportunity of living a respectful life to the senior citizens. a) Make a list of the challenges that may occur in the future if the population of the senior citizens goes on increasing. b) Conduct a debate programme on whether the increase in the population of senior citizens is good or not. 2. Make a list of measures to maintain quality of life. Project Work Organize a speech programme in the class on the topic ‘the roles of youths in population management’. Select a Master of Ceremony (MC), judges, time keeper and chairperson among your classmates. SOCIAL STUDIES - GRADE 8 301
