Message from section mentor Dear students, Schooling is our first contact with the world, a period of joy, healthy competition, adjustment sharing and love. Nowadays we are locked down in our houses due to the pandemic Covid 19. So these memories are away from us. In the midst of this situation I’m happy to hear that 7B children are coming forward with their class magazine “7B chronicles”. Making a magazine is like taking some ‘time out' from regular classes and doing something completely different that can really help group dynamics and may also give quieter students a chance to show their creative thinking and writing skills. It unleashes a wide spectrum of creative skills ranging from writing to editing and even in designing the magazine. I congratulate the entire editorial team and the Class Mentor Mrs Shini P Thomas for their hard work and dedication that has resulted in the publication of the class magazine. “With warm wishes and God’s blessings” Preeja Mohan Section Mentor

GUEST EDITORIAL Dr. Anupama.R Director and Chief consultant PRAN fertility centre IMA TVM Branch President. Respected teachers and dear children, World is in the midst of a huge pandemic. Hope you know that Kerala has high disease attack rates now. The only way to reduce the disease spread in the community is to observe social distancing and wearing masks properly. If children are exposed to this disease, chance of spreading the infection will be more especially among your household contacts and old age people. That’s why you all have to remain at home and continue online classes and but of course away from your cheerful school life. Even though you are at home try to interact with your teachers, keep a good relationship with your friends, house household members, have nutritious foods, good exercise and enjoy a peaceful comfortable atmosphere. We shall overcome this with a combined effort. I wish all the very best to each one of you. Let 7B chronicles be a huge success. Stay safe and stay healthy.

GUEST EDITORIAL Teaching the new generation about recycling Mrs. Lekha Radhakrishnan ➢ India book of records [email protected] holder. ➢ Universal record holder. ➢ Hindustan latex award for recycling waste materials. ➢ Eastern Boomika Iconic Women Award. ➢ One among the 50 most influential people in Kerala in the year 2019. ➢ Recognitions from various associations. ➢ Applied for Guinness world record “There is no such thing as away. When we throw anything away it must go somewhere” - Annie Leonard. Recycling is vastly important and it’s vital we continue to promote the environmental message on sustainability and the true benefits it has. In this specific piece, this is what Mrs. Lekha Radhakrishnan has to say. My success story: Life can be made beautiful and meaningful if we fulfill our ultimate aim. My ultimate aim is to convert waste materials into new useful products that too my own ideas. One afternoon, 5 years ago the fish fry I prepared caught my attention. It resembled beautiful red flowers. I just arranged it in a plate, seasoned it with garlic, curry leaves

etc. and clicked it. My colleague’s response to the click was my first motivation. Inspired by his comments the same day itself I started making beautiful handicraft items from waste materials of different types. I have made 500 unique handmade handicraft items from waste materials till date. Not a single day passes without creating a new art work even after the hectic schedule at office and home. Nothing goes through my hand without undergoing drastic makeover like flowers, house decors, ornaments birds etc. The most important thing for fulfilling your ultimate goal is be positive and be confident towards your goals. Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without…. “Be a green kid”- What does it mean to be green? Green is more to be than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment- the water, the land, and the air we breathe.Waste is anything we throw away or get rid off, that doesn’t get used. Three great ways that you can eliminate waste and protect our environment are reduce, reuse and recycle. Waste, and how we choose to handle it affect our environment. Practicing all three of these activities every day is not only important for a healthy environment, but it can also be fun too. You can become a key player in making our world a safe and healthy place. Teaching kids about the environment is always important and if they can understand and be appreciative of the environment then that’s a win. As the stay-at-home order stretches on, arts and crafts can help you to pass the time too. Now is the time to embrace our ability to recycle and create...!!!

Charity events for kids teach the vital traits of compassion, generosity and humanity for others. Children must be taught to share. They must be taught to think of others. One of the best ways to teach these traits is to involve children in charitable activities. We the students of class VII B, launched our charity drive Nanma during the lockdown times. Our first initiative was the one student one soap #fight corona campaign # which was intended to help the community to fight against corona. Soaps and sanitizers were donated to Missionaries of Charity located at Kunnukuzhi, Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram in September. # Inspiring in every page 15

Physical, Mental and Emotional effects of COVID-19 on Children - An Online Survey. Dev Nandan.J Ashish Nobey Thomas. Class VII B Guided by: Mrs. Shini P Thomas. Living in the Covid-19 has been tough on all of us. Many voices go unheard and children are no exception. That is why we are thrilled to share with you a survey conducted by us to know how our classmates are feeling during this pandemic. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of the covid-19 outbreak on the physical, mental and emotional effects on children. Method: A total of 29 students of class 7B were asked to complete the online questionnaire. Key findings: ➢ 48.3% responded that they are nervous and worried;37.9% scared of corona. ➢ 75.9% missed school, shopping, enjoying outside and travel. ➢ 79.3% are concerned or worried about family members. ➢ 37.9% were feeling bored,13.8% were tensed and 10.3%were having moodiness and fearful thoughts. ➢ 72.4% stated an increase in daily screen time. ➢ 65.5% are doing no or minimal exercise. ➢ 55.2% responded that their parents are working and not at home. ➢ 54.2% were feeling lonely where as 41.7% felt socially isolated. # Inspiring in every page 16

➢ 41.4 % noted an increase in weight. ➢ 65.5% are not practising yoga. ➢ 89.7% wants school to reopen but only when it is safe to do so. RESULTS Children reported that having mixed emotions in lockdown; whilst they are happy and relaxed with their families; they also feel fear, worry, nervousness, loneliness, sadness, boredom and anger. At a physical level child noted a lack of physical activity which makes them primarily sedentary. Socially they miss peers. This is indeed an unprecedented time for all of us. Children are likely to be experiencing worry, anxiety and fear. If schools have closed as part of necessary measures, then children may no longer have that sense of stimulation that is provided by the environment, and now they have less opportunity to be with their friends and get that social support that is essential for good mental well-being. With the disruptive effects of covid-19 -including social distancing- it is important that we check on each on each other, call and video chat, and are mindful and sensitive to the unique mental health needs of those we care for. Our anxiety and fears should be acknowledged and not be ignored, but better understood by and addressed by parents, school and government. Parents and teachers need to understand the urgency to protect the mental health of children. Shelter at home isn’t easy, but it is manageable with a plan. Time moves. Time never stands still. Weeks at home will zoom by no measurable progress if you don’t have a schedule designed toward purposeful activities. Take a breath and begin to map out a daily schedule,6 days on/one rest day off, for the children and adults. Its normal to feel scared, it becomes unhealthy when we stay idle and silent. Anger, frustration, moodiness, fearful thoughts, sleeplessness, # Inspiring in every page 17

emotional detachment, inability to listen to instructions, energy loss, etc are Traumatic stress symptoms. Being at home can place some children at risk of or increased to child protection incidents. This is something that is very concerning. SUGGESTIONS: Simple strategies that can address this can include giving children the love and attention that they need to resolve their fears, explaining what is happening in a way they can understand. Ask how are they managing the stress. Listen carefully and compassionately. Spend time with children. Its more comforting to be together than alone and isolated during lockdown. Offer a listening ear of support, comfort and encouraging words which can help children. Allow children to reach out to text or call their friends or classmates they haven’t heard from since the lockdown. Reassure that traumatic emotions are normal reactions to abnormal situation like coronavirus lockdowns. This generation of children could become mentally and spiritually stronger because of covid-19. Conclusion: This study provides evidence about the need to safeguard children’s wellbeing during covid-19 crisis. “A CHILD’S SENSE OF SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE WORLD HAS MORE TO DO WITH YOU THAN WORLD EVENTS.” # Inspiring in every page 18

INTERVIEW WITH CBSE CLASS 12 SCHOOL TOPPER (2019-2020) CLASS VII B From her future plans to success mantra SHREYA SUSAN MATHEW, the state topper in the humanities stream of Class X11 CBSE board exam; 3 rd rank holder at National level shares it all in this interview. She has achieved the feat by securing 99.6% marks in the exam. She has got admission in Ashoka University. She has scored 96.5 percentile in LSAT India exam. She is planning to start a public speaking platform called the MINDSTORM. DEV: Heartiest Congratulations to you from Class 7B. We are all proud of you. How did you manage such a feat? SHREYA: Thank you so much. Of course, the results that I got are an outcome of meticulous preparation…but equally important was the support that I received from my parents, sister, teachers and everybody who helped me throughout my school years. # Inspiring in every page 30

RIYA: What special timetable of study did you follow? SHREYA: I made sure that I finished studying all the portions before the first model exam. During the study holidays, I created a study timetable which gave me ample time to revise each subject 7 times and work out questions and previous year question papers. DEV: How did you manage your studies along with extra-curricular activities? SHREYA: Extracurricular activities were more of a stress buster for me and it helped me to take my mind off studies and enjoy school life better. So ‘smart work’ helped me to manage my time between studies and extracurricular activities. RIYA: Did you take any special coaching in any of the subjects? SHREYA: Yes, I did have tuition for economics. DEV: What is your success mantra? SHREYA: ‘Prepare for the worst and expect for the best.’ RIYA: What was the role played by your parents? SHREYA: They were my supporting pillars throughout my board exam journey. Rather than social media or other forms of entertainment, I used to spend my free time after studies with them. The positive energy and the encouragement that they gave me played a huge role in helping me to achieve this feat. DEV: What was the role of your teachers? SHREYA: Words cannot describe the effort that teachers put in for helping each child achieve the best of his/her capabilities. From making us practice important questions to giving us the moral support when we needed, teachers were the indispensable part of the success of each and every one of us. # Inspiring in every page 31

RIYA: What do you plan to do now? SHREYA: My ambition is to work in the United Nations under the professional and higher category. So, all my academic pursuits and efforts are aligned to achieving that goal. DEV: What was the reaction of your family and friends? SHREYA: Honestly speaking, they were the ones who were more excited and prouder than me about the results! RIYA: One last question. What is your advice to the other students? SHREYA: Every person is different. So, every person has their own way of doing things too. Getting good marks do not necessarily mean that you have to follow the study methods someone else is following. But at the end of the day, be truthful to yourself, put in enough effort and always believe that you can do it. DEV: It was a great pleasure to interview you. RIYA: Wishing you the best for every step in your journey. SHREYA: Thank you. DEV NANDAN.J RIYA ELIZABETH # Inspiring in every page 32

` POSITIVE IMPACT OF COVID-19 & LOCKDOWN ON OUR ENVIRONMENT Coronavirus or Covid-19 is currently making the headlines for newspapers and media. It is the greatest challenge we have faced after World War II. The covid-19 pandemic is much more than a health crisis; being it a socioeconomic crisis. Due to the virus 90% of all schools, colleges and universities were closed which resulted in 1.38 billion students attending online classes. Not only education, the pandemic also resulted in a decline in the economic activity in the first quarter of 2020, thus negatively affecting the labor market, airline fields etc. Although this disease had many negative impacts on our lives, this disease has brought in a positive impact on our environment as well as in relations. Before the start of these lockdown, there were visible signs that the earth is getting degraded. The air around us has been toxic to breathe in. The earth faced global warming which resulted in melting of glaciers and a rise in sea level. The earth also faced depletion in ozone layer, natural resources etc. During the lockdown there had been lesser travelling done by people, factories and industries have been closed down which resulted to the pollution in air dropping significantly. Since there were no boats, ships and industries; the reports stated that the water has become clear and there is also a notable improvement in the quality of water. Animals have also been shot moving around freely. Although we humans have had a hard time coping up with the lockdown, humans could define relationship more strongly during this period of locking us up at home, finding new means of survival and to cope up satisfactorily with the limited resources. “Even on cloudy days, the sun waits to break through”; likewise let’s hope beating Covid-19 for a better tomorrow with pure water, clean air and enlightened hearts. ` JUST SMILE A smile costs nothing, But it can work wonders. It happens in a fraction of a second, Like the flash of a camera. It’s a welcome sign, And its memories last forever. It is a sign of gratitude, It is a sign of acceptance. It is a very small thing, Which everyone can do. But it works a lot, It is a sign of affection and care.
