["IIT and beyond At IITM, Ananthu was well known for his writing and debating skills. He did his MS from Stanford in Management Science and Engg (Operations Research). He worked briefly with Xerox and Esso in USA and returned to India in 1969, giving up his green card, with the intention of dedicating his life to social service. In 1976, Ananthu met and married Jyoti who had similar ideals. They opted not to have children so as to pursue their ideal. Jyoti and Ananthu spent 14 years amongst Gandhian workers. They also set up a Study Circle in IITD for investigating the link of science with spirituality and social consciousness, under the aegis of Prof DS Kothari. I n 1 9 9 1 , t h e y s h i f t e d t o a s m a l l h a m l e t i n Ta m i l n a d u , n o t far from Bangalore, and created a Tr ust called Navadarshanam, where like-minded idealists led eco-friendly lives in a forest-like setting. T he community lives off-grid, in homes made from compressed mud blocks, with rain water harvesting and self-sufficiency in basic needs. After the death of his wife in 2008, Ananthu shifted to their Gur u\u2019s ashram in Beas, Punjab, where he is doing intensive research on the science-spirituality connection. 92","ARAVINDAKSHAN NAYAR CM 1.005\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1960 2010 2010 1971 93","IIT and beyond After graduating from IIT in 1965, Aravindakshan, or CMA as he is popularly known, joined ALIND Switchgear Division, Kerala as Design Engineer and worked there till 1988, rising to the position of Divisional Chief Executive. From 1988 to 2003, Nayar worked for Alstom T&D in France in senior positions like Vice President (Global Sourcing), Vice President (Global Industrial strategy) and Vice President (Change Management). From 2003 to 2011 he was on the Board of Alstom T&D India. After retirement from Alstom, CMA has been active as a Tr ustee of Kerala Inter national Centre, Trivandr um, a think-tank on International Affairs and also as a Member of \u201cThought Leader\u2019s Council\u201d of IITMAA. Aravindakshan married Meena Devi in July 1971. She re t i re d a s a P ro fe s s o r. T h e y h a v e t w o s o n s, b o t h E n g i n e e rs. CMA\u2019s cur rent interests are geopolitical developments, international politics and climate change. 94","ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING BASHEER AHAMED (1943-2005) 1.007\/60 1960 95","IIT and beyond After graduation in 1965, Basheer Ahamed joined D a n d a k a ra n ya R a i l w a y a s a S i g n a l I n s p e c t o r, a n d w o rk e d there for four years. H e t h e n j o i n e d I n d i a n Te l e p h o n e I n d u s t r y ( I T I ) i n 1 9 6 9 as Assistant Engineer and developed the first push button telephone in India. In 1977, Basheer left ITI and took up a job in Libya and worked on their high voltage transmission systems. In 1985 he returned to India and tried his hand at Agriculture. As this did not succeed, he went back to Libya and continued his work on high voltage transmission systems up to 1995. He then returned and settled down in Hyderabad. Basheer married in 1974 and had two sons, both well settled. Basheer passed away around 2005 in Hyderabad. 96","BHASKARANARAYANA A 1.013\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1964 2020 2019 1972 97","IIT and beyond After graduation, Bhaskar joined Electronics & Radar Development Organisation as Scientific Officer after a brief training at IAT Pune. In 1972 Bhaskar moved to ISRO Satellite Centre at Bangalore. He developed the communication system for India\u2019s first satellite ARYABHATTA. He was given the Outstanding Achievement Award for his contributions. He later developed communication systems for the first remote sensing satellite IRS. In 1995, he became Project Director INSAT 2E. In 2001 he was Director Satellite in the Communication & Navigation Programme Office. From 2007, he was Scientific Secretary in ISRO and planned and executed programmes for the Department. For his contribution, he was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by ISRO. During his tenure at ISRO as Director of Satellite Communication and Navigation Programme Office, Bhaskar was responsible for establishing satellite-based n e t w o r k s f o r s o c i e t a l a p p l i c a t i o n s l i k e Te l e - e d u c a t i o n , Te l e - m e d i c i n e a n d V i l l a g e R e s o u r c e s. After retiring from ISRO, Bhaskar joined KL Univ ersity, a deemed Univ ersity, as Pro-Chancellor till 2013. Bhaskar is settled in Bengaluru with his wife Saroj. Their daughter and son are settled in USA. They have three grandchildren. 98","DASANNA SRIDHAR M 1.019\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1965 2020 2013 1979 99","IIT and beyond A t I I T, S r i d h a r p a r t i c i p a t e d i n N C C , i n t e r - I I T S o c c e r a n d Cricket. After graduation, Sridhar worked for one year at ECC Corp, Calcutta and two years at MSEB, Bangalore. He then migrated to USA and did his post-graduation from Montana State University in 1969. After MS, Sridhar joined Honeywell Information Systems in Boston, and was involved in various projects of software development, product\/strategic planning and finally marketing of PCs at Honeywell until 1990. Sridhar then started his own IT Consulting Company developing software for clients. He retired in 2002. He married Uma in 1979, who passed away in 2016. His s o n i s s e t t l e d i n N e w Yo r k a n d t w i n d a u g h t e rs i n Philadelphia. Since 2002, Sridhar has been shuttling between Bengaluru and the USA. He loves travelling to different countries, enjoys music and cooking various Indian dishes, especially dosas of all types. 100","KRISHNA KUMAR KHARE 1.033\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1960 2015 2020 101","IIT and beyond After graduation, Khare worked in IIT Delhi and Electron- ics Companies in India until 1971. He then migrated to UK to work for Electronics Companies there. Khare did his Masters from Portsmouth University in 1977 and PhD from Surrey University in 1980. His academic career began with Bir mingham University as Faculty ( 1 9 8 1 - 8 3 ) f o l l o w e d b y N a n y a n g Te c h n o l o g i c a l U n i v e rs i t y, Singapore (1983-89) and finally with University of Cen- tral England, till his retirement in 2004. After retirement, Khare plunged wholly into promoting the Hindi language in UK. He founded Gitanjali Multilingual Literary Circle (GMLC) in Birmingham to integrate the Indian diaspora and Multilingual Forum for Integration and Peace (MFIP) to provide for better understanding amongst different cultures and languages. He had initiated several programmes on Radio and TV both in UK and in India. He organised regular Conferences, Hindi poetry recitals and Hindi literature publications, garnering support of Indian Government and International Agencies. He pub- lished se v eral anthologies of Hindi poetr y, two books in English and more than 50 research papers in international jour nals. Khare married Chitra Sinha in 1967 and the couple con- tinue to live in Birmingham UK. 102","KRISHNAMURTHY KS (1943\u20131982) 2.013\/61 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1961 1982 1975 103","IIT and beyond KSK, also kno wn as \u201cVadhyar\u201d hailed from Madurai and joined IITM after his BSc (Physics). He was fond of C r i ck e t a n d w a s a fa s t b o w l e r. After graduation, KSK joined Hewlett-Packard in Boblingen, Germany and whilst there, developed an interest in Medical Electronics which prompted him to do a PG Diploma in this field from Australia. This was followed by a PhD in Neuro-Physiology from Kings College, London. He then mov ed to Tucson, Arizona and later to Houston in 1975 to work in a Medical School in the field of Neuro-Muscular Physiolog y, under Prof Gilden. KSK unfortunately died in an accident in June 1982 in Houston when his car exploded on the Highway whilst retur ning home from his Lab. He was the first member of our batch to leave us. His wife Latha, two daughters and grandchildren continue to live in Houston. 104","MAHADEVAN CS 1.039\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1965 2009 2019 1972 105","IIT and beyond After graduating in 1965, Mahadevan joined Air India, where he built a successful career in Aircraft maintenance & management till 1989. He was also involved in maintenance of IAF\u2019s Defence aircraft like the Lockheed L1049. Whilst with Air India, Mahadevan acquired postgraduate degrees from Mumbai\u2019s VJTI and Bajaj Institute of Management. Between 1989 and 1995, Mahadevan worked with Gulf Air and subsequently switched to Amiri Flight, the Abu Dhabi Royal Family\u2019s private airline. He retired in 2011 but remained associated with the aviation industry till 2017 and assisted in the formation of Royal Jet, a private airline for the Gulf \u2019s high-end customers. M a h a d e v a n w a s t h e Te c h n i c a l R e p a t A i r b u s I n d u s t r i e s, To u l o u s e , F r a n c e , a m e m b e r o f t h e Ta t a C o m m i t t e e o n AVIATION-2000, Chair man of IATA Production Planning & Control Committee and was associated with the formation of Middle East Business Aviation. Mahadevan married Geetha in 1972. They have two sons and four grandchildren. A reputed cricketer from his IIT days, he played for Air India and was Coach-cum-Manager of Amiri\u2019s cricket team. 106","MALLIKAR JUNA RAO KC (1943\u20132020) 1.042\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1960 2019 2003 1971 107","IIT and beyond After graduation, Mallikarjuna Rao started his professional career with APSEB (Andhra Pradesh State E l e c t r i c i t y B o a rd ) a s Ju n i o r E n g i n e e r. Around 1977, Mallikarjuna got a big break and was selected by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for the coveted Railways Services. He was posted as Assistant Engineer in South Central Railway in the Diesel Engine maintenance division at Vijayawada. With the advent of Railway electrification, Mallikarjuna was transferred to the electric traction division at Secunderabad and was in charge of setting up the Electric traction network for South Central Rail way. He prog ressed steadily in his career and at the time of his retirement, Mallikarjuna was the Chief Engineer for Electric traction Division for the South Central Rail way. Mallikarjuna married Vijayalakshmi in 1971 and the c o u p l e h a v e a s o n a n d a d a u g h t e r. Mallikarjuna Rao passed away in 2020. 108","MANI CHANDY K 1.044\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1972 2018 2017 1969 109","IIT and beyond Chandy won the 1965 Siemens Medal for merit at IITM. He enjoyed playing hockey for the Institute team. After graduation, he stayed some months at IITM to successfully build a pulse-code modulator under Prof Seinecke\u2019s supervision. Chandy left for USA in August 1965; completed MS in Electrical Engineering in Brooklyn Polytechnic and PhD in Operations Research at MIT in 1969. He then worked at IBM Scientific Center for one year and joined University o f Te x a s, A u s t i n i n 1 9 7 0 ; w a s t h e r e a s P r o f e s s o r t i l l 1987. he then became Professor Emeritus at California I n s t i t u t e o f Te c h n o l o g y a n d w o r k e d t i l l 2 0 1 4 . D u r i n g h i s a c a d e m i c c a re e r, C h a n d y re c e i v e d s e v e ra l awards and recognitions: Computer Measurement Group, IEEE, ACM, National Academy of Engineering and IITM Distinguished Alumnus. Chandy has published 150+ papers, 4 books on Queuing networks and Performance Modeling; Distributed Simulation; Distributed Systems; Earthquake Monitoring; Sense & Respond Systems. Chandy is currently Simon Ramo Professor-Emeritus at C a l Te c h . H e a n d h i s w i f e Je a n l i v e i n L a C a n a d a , C A . Their son and daughter also live in USA. His pastimes i n cl u d e H i k i n g a n d Yo g a . 110","MUTHUKRISHNAN CR 1.051\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1960 2015 2014 1965 111","IIT and beyond Muthu, as he is fondly known to his batch-mates, got late admission at IIT in 1960, through a waitlist. He overcame his initial admission setbacks by brilliantly topping the batch in all the 5 years and securing President\u2019s Gold Medal in 1965. M u t h u j o i n e d I I T K a n p u r a n d c o m p l e t e d h i s M Te c h i n 1967 and PhD in Computer Science (CS) in 1969. He c o n t i n u e d a s fa c u l t y t h e re t i l l 1 9 7 3 . W h i l e a t K a n p u r, besides developing a passion for digital computing, logic and constructive math, Muthu toured the entire hinterland of North India and became fluent in Hindi. Muthu returned to IITM in 1973 in CSE, and soon became the Head, grooming a competent faculty and guiding numerous Research scholars and hundreds of Engineering students. He was Dy Director IITM. In 2005, Muthu joined TCS as Consulting Advisor to CEO for 9 years - an i n t e re s t i n g p h a s e o f c o n t r i bu t i o n i n h i s c a re e r. A Chair in his name was established at IITM in 2016 for Computational Brain Research. He is recipient of Life-Time Achievement award of CSI and continues to be engaged in mentoring faculty and students. Muthu lives with his wife, Nirmala in Chennai. They have two daughters and three grandchildren. 112","NARASIMHIAH RAMESH 1.056\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1960 2020 2020 1972 113","IIT and beyond After graduating in 1965, Ramesh did MS from IIT (Chicago) and received his PhD in 1971 from University o f To r o n t o. After a brief summer training at Illinois Po wer Company, Ramesh returned in 1972 and first joined CPRI, B a n g a l o r e a n d t h e n N G E F, B a n g a l o r e a s C h i e f o f R & D. He led a new Power Electronics Division at NGEF with AEG collaboration. During this time, Ramesh modified AEG technology to produce Thyristor Convertors for Mercury Arc rectifiers replacement for Steel Plants in India. He also helped develop prototype Thyristor controls for Easter n Rail way. Ramesh left NGEF in 2004 as Executive Director O p e r a t i o n s a n d j o i n e d t h e I n s t i t u t e o f Te c h n o l o g y a t C h i ck b a l l a p u r, n e a r B e n g a l u r u , a s P ro fe s s o r fo r P G prog rammes in Digital Electronics and Networking. He was also Consultant for the development of Compulsator for DRDO, Ministry of Defence and Argon Ion Engine for ISRO. Ramesh and his wife Renuka live in Bengaluru. They have two sons settled in Australia\/Canada and two grandsons. Besides professional consultation work, Ramesh\u2019s interests include helping on Research Gate and Mathematical model of Consciousness. 114","NARESH SHARMA 1.059\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1967 2020 2020 1974 115","IIT and beyond N a re s h S h a r m a h a i l s f ro m Jo d h p u r. A f t e r g ra d u a t i o n , Naresh worked in the private sector in India, and joined U n i v e r s i t y o f To r o n t o i n 1 9 6 7 f o r h i s M S i n E l e c t r i c a l E n g i n e e r i n g. Naresh then worked 1970-76 for a Company in Illinois where he led design and certification projects for all s o l i d - s t a t e re l a y s u s e d i n a X e rox c o p i e r. I n 1 9 7 6 , h e moved to a Company in California where, over several years, he led megawatt Inverter projects to support uninterrupted power supplies for large Computing Centers and Naval shipboard applications. From 1994 to 2014, Naresh worked on several projects relating to Electric Cars, Wind power generation, Aircraft power application and S o l a r p o w e r. H e re t i re d i n 2 0 1 4 . Naresh and his wife Kiran have settled in Gardena, CA. They have two sons and six grandchildren. Naresh, an Indian culture aficionado, supported Indian cultural education for NRI children in USA. His passion to \u2018Give back\u2019 to his motherland motivated him to work with several NGOs and GOI by raising money from Indians in USA to fund rural energy projects in India. 116","NATARA JAN SUNDARAM (1942\u20132009) 1.048\/59 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1963 1968 2006 1968 117","IIT and beyond He was named Nutty. Ev er yone called him that. After graduation, Nutty joined ION Exchange India Ltd, Bombay. He then mov ed to Garlick Engineering. By the early 1980s, he relocated to Madras with Nirmala and their two young daughters. There, he managed operations for Cravatex Ltd, a Garments Firm, and later also mana ged a Trav el Agency. It was Prof CV Seshadri (Caeser) who introduced him to Spirulina, an immunity-boosting antioxidant. Around 1990, Nutty started growing the algae and producing the tablets at home, as a cotta ge industr y. Nutty was good company, open, good-hearted, inclusiv e, non-judgmental, content and helpful. He all along sported that one-dimensional figure which betrayed his indefatigable energy and high decibel level. The other constant was his easy flowing conversation style, his recall of names and incidents and his signature laughter as he s p o k e. A v o ra c i o u s re a d e r, h e w a s a l s o g o o d a t B r i d g e, t h e har monica and jiving. Nutty passed away in Madras in August 2009. After graduation, Pradeep did a two-year apprenticeship in UK and a Diploma in Business Management. Back home in 1967, he worked with Corporates in the field of Power Distribution & Transmission, mana ging tur nk e y projects in India, Middle-East and North Africa. In 1988, he joined the Finnish Company Wartsila as MD India; he retired in 2003. He was conferred the Order of The White Rose of Finland by the President of Finland. Pradee p was Chair man CII Wester n Re gion and President, Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industr y. He has been an Independent Director on over 25 Company Boards, and an Executive Leadership Coach since 2004. Pradeep is a Fellow o f I E T ( T h e I n s t i t u t i o n o f E n g i n e e r i n g a n d Te c h n o l o g y ) a n d also recipient of the DA Award from IITM in 2001. Pradee p and his wife Veena liv e in Mumbai. T heir two married sons and a granddaughter reside in California and Va n c o u v e r. P ra d e e p l o v e s t ra v e l l i n g , g o l f, m u s i c, s o c i a l i s i n g and \u2013 being a people-person \u2013 keeping up with friends, young and old. He is engaged with social causes like girl child education, women-empowerment and senior citizen care. 120","RAMANARAYANAN LR (1942-2021) 2.015\/61 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1963 2020 2014 1971 121","IIT and beyond LR Ramanarayanan joined IITM in 1961 as a gold medalist Physics graduate. After graduating in 1965, LRR as he was fondly known by his colleagues, joined Bhilai Steel Plant. After acquiring practical manufacturing experience there, LRR chose to move to Engineering Consultancy and joined Mecon in 1972 to work on various steel projects. In 1987, LRR switched to another Engineering Consultancy MN Dastur and was involved in the mega steel project in Libya. D u r i n g h i s p ro fe s s i o n a l c a re e r, L R R t ra v e l l e d e x t e n s i v e l y across Russia, United States and Europe. He worked with all the major manufacturers in the global Steel industr y. L R R w a s a k e e n s t a m p a n d c o i n c o l l e c t o r, a n i m p re s s i v e ch e s s p l a ye r, a v o ra c i o u s re a d e r \u2013 a fa n o f P G Wo d e h o u s e. LRR passed away in 2021. His wife Uma lives with her d a u g h t e r, s o n i n l a w a n d g ra n d s o n i n I re l a n d . 122","RAMANATHAN K 2.016\/61 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1965 2020 2020 1966 123","IIT and beyond Ramanathan joined IITM in 1961 as a Sciences graduate. His entire professional career of four decades was linked with DRDO, under Ministry of Defence. In 1966, Ramanathan joined LRDE, Bangalore where he worked for eight years on R&D projects related to incorporation of MTI facility in FC Radar system. In 1974, Ramanathan moved to DLRL Hyderabad and was involved in the development of Advanced Defence EW equipment. He rose to become the Head of the Organisation i n 1 9 9 4 , a s D i re c t o r. R a m a n a t h a n w a s fo r t u n a t e t o h a v e worked under Dr Abdul Kalam before retiring in 2002. He won coveted awards like Scientist of the year and Project M a n a g e r o f t h e ye a r. Ramanathan and his wife Vimala live in Chennai. They h a v e a s o n a n d a d a u g h t e r. Ramanathan likes visiting places of historical and religious interest, studies current topics of interest and reads religious books. 124","RAMESH CHANDER MADHOK 1.081\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1960 2020 1969 2000 125","IIT and beyond A t I I T, R a m e s h M a d h o k p a r t i c i p a t e d i n t a bl e t e n n i s tournaments and was also part of the NCC. Upon g raduating, Ramesh work ed as an Executiv e Trainee with Shri Ram Vinyl and Chemicals Industries. He then joined Central Water and Po wer Commission as an A s s i s t a n t D i re c t o r. In 1968, Ramesh moved to Canada to pursue his MASc degree at the University of Ottawa. After graduation, he joined the power division of Alcan, responsible for the maintenance and engineering of their electric generating stations and substations. He introduced online monitoring systems for power transformers and hydro-generators. He retired in 2002. For 15 years, he also ser v ed as a Tr ustee for the English school Board, where he worked in the best interest of students. Ramesh and his wife Violet Lall have two sons, a daughter and five grandchildren. He was the Student President in 1964-1965. After graduation, Aleem worked with Indian Cable Company, Jamshedpur until 1969. He then mig rated to USA and worked for Lone Star Industries, CT until 1974. In this period, he did his MS in Operations Research at Brooklyn Polytechnical Institute. Aleem then joined Hartford Insurance Company for two years, during which time he did his MBA(Finance) from Bridge port Univ ersity, C T. D u r i n g 1 9 7 8 - 8 5 h e w o r k e d f o r O l i n C o r p o r a t i o n a n d G re a t N o r t h e r n N e k o o s a C o r p a s P ro j e c t M a n a g e r. Aleem started his own business ventures in 1985 \u2013 Syken Corporation (1985-87) dealing with computer hardware a n d s o f t w a r e ; S y Q u e s t Te c h n o l o g i e s ( 1 9 8 8 - 9 3 ) f o r customised programmes for businesses and Aztech Mortgage Corp, a fiduciar y ser vice (1992-93). His altruism extended to starting Aleem General Hospital i n h i s n a t i v e v i l l a g e, r u n by h i s D o c t o r b ro t h e r. A s h i n i n g s t a r, A l e e m p a s s e d a w a y fa r t o o e a rl y i n 1 9 9 3 . H e i s sur viv ed by his wife Dr Ar una Trehan, son Omar r Syed, and three granddaughters. 128","VINOD K BATRA 1.115\/60 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1965 2018 1970 129","IIT and beyond Vinod was an avid sportsman and represented IITM at three inter-IIT sports meets in Hock e y. He also played Cricket and participated in track and field at annual competitions. Vinod enjoyed his 4+ years stay in Krishna Hostel where he was Mess Hall supervisor for couple of years. After graduation, Vinod worked at IIT Delhi for six months, then migrated to Canada to do his MSc in Electrical and Computer Science from University of Ottawa. I n 1 9 6 7 , V i n o d j o i n e d B e l l N o r t h e r n R e s e a r c h To r o n t o followed by 3 years in ITT Canada in Electronic and D i g i t a l Te l e c o m R e s e a r c h & D e v e l o p m e n t . H e t h e r e a f t e r moved to USA and worked at Stromberg Carlson Rochester NY in Electronic & Digital Switch Systems. The business did e xtremel y well initiall y, but the industry later faced serious difficulties and was sold. Kannan passed away in 2017.
