IIT and beyond After graduating in 1965, Ghosh-Da, as he was popularly known, worked with Bridge & Roof, Calcutta and with Utkal Machinery in Orissa. Ghosh-da migrated to UK in 1968 and worked with Clarke Nicholls and Mancel, Consulting Civil Structural Engineers and other Companies, gaining valuable experi- ence in Str uctural Engineering. By mid 1970s, Ghosh qualified as a Chartered Structural Engineer and worked for a Local Authority. In 1974/75, he went on a one-year assignment to Nigeria. By late 1980s, Ghosh set up a partnership venture with his British friend for providing services to the general public in his locality, for str uctural sur v e ys and str uctural refurbishment works conforming to British Building Regulations. Between 2001 and 2006, he worked in Zambia on a consultancy assignment. After returning to UK, Ghosh retired in 2007. Ghosh married Krishna in 1968. They have a son and a d a u g h t e r. G h o s h - d a c o n t i n u e s t o l i v e i n t h e s a m e h o m e i n London, which he first moved into 40 years ago. 48

IIT and beyond After graduating in 1965, Bhass worked on a few assignments as Site Engineer before he chose his career in academics and joined TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, Kerala in 1968. His commitment and dedication t o h i s f i e l d o f E n g i n e e r i n g a n d h i s ch o s e n a c a d e m i c c a re e r, l e d h i m t o c o m p l e t e h i s M Te c h i n 1 9 7 4 a n d h i s P h D i n 1981, both at IITM, whilst still at TKM College. After 18 years with TKM’s Civil Engineering Department, Prof Bhass was transferred in 1986 to the Computer Applications Dept and retired in 1995 as its Head. Bhass thereafter worked in a Software Company in Te c h n o p a r k a n d l i v e d i n Tr i v a n d r u m t i l l 2 0 0 0 . H e subsequently worked as Principal of various colleges in Nagercoil, Dindigul and Tirunelveli and moved back to Kerala to head Mohandas Colle ge at Trivandr um. His last assignment, 2012-20, was as Dean of Post Graduate Studies at Sree Buddha College of Engineering in Pandalam, Kerala. IIT and beyond Hota migrated to the US after graduating in 1965 and completed his MS in 1967 and PhD in 1969 from North Carolina Univ ersity. He joined West Virginia University in 1969 as Asst Professor and rose to the position of Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Hota has supervised 300 MS and PhD students, and has published several books and over 400 technical papers on a wide range of subjects. Since 1988, Hota continues to direct US-NSF sponsored ‘The Constructed Facilities Center’, a Center of Excellence designated by the US Congress and the ‘Center for Integration of Composites into Infrastructure’ at W V U. H e h a s fo u r t e e n p a t e n t s t o h i s c re d i t a n d i s a re c i p i e n t of many awards, including the prestigious SAMPE’s Delmonte award. Hota received the DA Award from IITM in 2011. Hota has made pioneering contributions to advance the state-of-the-art FRP composite materials for infrastructure systems for use in a wide spectrum of engineering systems including modular housing, high pressure gas pipes, hydraulic structures, highways and bridges. Hota is still active with his academic and research work at WVU and lives in Morganto wn, West Virginia with his wife, Rajeswari. They have a son, a daughter and four grandchildren. 52

IIT and beyond Inder Bajaj developed a passion for rowing while at IITM and participated regularly in the rowing competitions at Madras Boat Club. After g raduation in 1965, Inder joined Bird & Co in Calcutta and was initially posted at the Bokaro Steel Plant site for construction supervision. Over five years, he switched j o b s i n cl u d i n g b e c o m i n g M a n a g e r i n a Te a E s t a t e . In 1970, Inder moved to UK and became a Boroughs Engineer working for the local government and became a specialist in Water Mana gement. He continued with various Water Organisations within the area under the local government until his retirement in 2010. Inder married Kamala in 1972. They have a son and a d a u g h t e r, b o t h s e t t l e d i n t h e U K . I n d e r a n d K a m a l a liv e in Derby, UK. 54

IIT and beyond Kripa stood first in Civil Engineering at IITM. Besides academics, his other interests were debates, music and C a m p a s t i m e s. H e r e p r e s e n t e d I I T M a t Yo u t h Fe s t i v a l i n Delhi in 1963. After graduation, Kripa worked briefly in India and in 1966, enrolled with University of Iowa, USA, on a JN Ta t a s c h o l a rs h i p, a n d c o m p l e t e d h i s P h D i n C i v i l Engineering in 1970. He then joined Portland Cement Association, Illinois and worked there for 10 years. In 1980, he moved to PROCON (a division of UOP) as its Head of Structural Engineering Dept. He then worked, 1990-96, for Brown & Root Braun, CA, after which, he started his own Consultancy Company in San Diego, CA. He remains actively engaged in the business. He has written several technical papers and manuals over the years. Kripa is married to Nirmala. They have 4 children and 11 grandchildren. His interests are walking, exercising and listening to music. 56

IIT and beyond After graduating in 1965, Krishnakumar joined University of California, Berkeley for a Master’s Programme in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. In the subsequent years, PK worked with Companies in the Manufacturing space and held senior level executive positions. He started his Consulting Firm specialising in Supply Chain process improvements and ERP Systems and continues to serve as the CEO. In 1982, PK married Indira, a Chemist. After graduating, Kumar worked in shipyards in Singapore and with erstwhile Mcdermott in Singapore and Malaysia, associated with designing and installing offshore structures. He returned to India in 1994 to set up his independent practice. He later moved to Abu Dhabi working in the offshore Gulf region. Kumar next joined Management C o n s u l t a n t s, S t o n e & We b s t e r, a n d s h i f t e d t o Pe r t h . Upon returning to India, he was Advisor to Larsen & To u b r o. He was later engaged for over a decade in running a self-funded Private Tr ust, providing a dozen orphan ch i l d re n s h e l t e r, fo o d a n d e d u c a t i o n a n d s e t t i n g t h e m u p to liv e with dignity. Kumar leads a quiet and meditative retired life with his wife, Neela. Their son, Vivek, lives in London and their daughter Lakshmi in San Francisco - both qualified professionals. 60

IIT and beyond At IITM, Dave showed a leaning towards the Fine Arts, Accountancy and Building Construction. In 1967, Dave started his own enterprise as a Consultant a n d B u i l d e r, c o n s t r u c t i n g re s i d e n t i a l , c o m m e rc i a l a n d community buildings in Chennai. He is an approved Valuer and Engineer for certifying soundness of public buildings. He did his PhD (Sanskrit) in 2010 from University of Madras. As a member of Lions International, Dave helped found Lions Hearing Aid Bank and Lions Eye Bank Tr ust. He became the District Governor of Lions International for 1 9 9 1 - 9 2 . I n 1 9 9 9 , Ta m i l n a d u G o v t . a l l o t t e d l a n d f o r a ‘Lions Cornea Block’ in the Govt. Eye Hospital. 25000 blind people received the gift of sight. In 1994, he was appointed Under Sheriff of Madras. He received several awards including from Rotary International in recognition of PQ[ LMKILM[ WN [WKQIT [MZ^QKM± ,I^M ZMKMQ^ML \\PM ,) )_IZL from IITM in 1996. Dave was President of the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce in 2014. He is President of two centenary schools and Tr ustee in many Or ganisations. Dave and his wife Sugna live in Chennai. They have one d a u g h t e r, t w o e n t re p re n e u r i a l s o n s a n d f i v e g ra n d ch i l d re n . 62

Departments – Defence Production, Civil Aviation and Shipping & Transport – handling design and e xecution of mega projects. His last position was as Chief Engineer with Govt-o wned Ja waharlal Nehr u Port Tr ust, Bombay. KVN sought earl y Voluntar y Retirement from Govt ser vice and worked with major corporates in the Indian Port Sector - 1996-2002 as President of Adani Ports, 2002-2004 as MD Jindal for construction of a Coal berth in Goa, 2005-2014 as President with Reliance Industries. He has s i n c e b e e n a n A d v i s e r t o K a r a n j a Te r m i n a l a n d L o g i s t i c s Pvt. Ltd. He also free-lances as an Arbitrator and Defence counsel. Religious and spiritual-minded by nature, Natarajan has been contributing to the construction and maintenance of temples in the neighbourhood of cities/towns wherever he had lived during his lifetime. His wife and he enjoy the bliss of a joint family life in Navi Mumbai living together with his son, d a u g h t e r- i n - l a w, g ra n d s o n a n d g ra n dd a u g h t e r. H i s pastimes include listening to religious discourses and music, and taking a long daily walk. 64

IIT and beyond After his g raduation, Pandya worked for a year at School of Architecture, Ahmedabad, and then completed his two-year MBA Diploma in 1968. He worked with Humphreys & Glasgow 1968-70 and with Engineers India Ltd, Delhi 1970-72. Pandya then moved to the USA in 1972 to work with EPC Management firms. In later years, he joined Deloitte from where he retired in 2009 as Director (Partner). After retirement, he continued to travel frequently to India and was associated with University of Petroleum and Ener g y Studies, Dehradun, and, CEPT Univ ersity, Ahmedabad, where he was a visiting faculty. Pandya passed away in March 2020 and is survived by his wife Aruna and sons Mehul and Nirav, all resident in USA. 66

IIT and beyond After graduating in 1966, Sastry spent time managing his property in his hometown in Andhra Pradesh and working with a prestressed concrete Company in Hyderabad. He r e t u r n e d t o I I T M i n 1 9 7 0 f o r h i s M Te c h d e g r e e i n C i v i l Engineering and left for USA in 1973 to do his PhD in Biological and Ag ricultural Engineering. After his PhD Sastry Putcha, as he is known in the US, accumulated over 30 years’ experience in Civil, Geotechnical and Construction Engineering fields as a P ra c t i t i o n e r, A d m i n i s t ra t o r, A c a d e m i c i a n a n d R e s e a rch e r in State Gov er nments, Univ ersities and private industr y. He earned several patents in his field of specialisation. Though Sastry retired in 2011 from fulltime employment with the Florida De partment of Transportation, he continues as a part-time Consulting Engineer with Radise International and Smart Structures, Florida. S a s t r y a n d h i s w i f e P u n y a h a v e s e t t l e d i n F r i s c o, Te x a s. He spends his time with his two children and three g randchildren while continuing his habit of reading. 68

IIT and beyond After graduating, Radhakrishnan joined the faculty of Applied Mechanics Department of IIT Madras in 1966, a n d w h i l e w o r k i n g , o b t a i n e d h i s M Te c h ( E n g g M e c h a n - ics) and PhD (Biomechanics) both from IIT Madras. He continued to serve IIT Madras and headed the Applied Mechanics Department as well as the Biomedical Engineering Department. Radha, as he is popularly known, carried out extensive research in the field of biomechanics and published s e v e r a l p a p e rs a n d m e n t o r e d t h e s t u d e n t s f o r M Te c h a n d PhD. He retired from IITM in 2008. Post retirement, Dr Radhakrishnan continues to review papers for an international journal, and, also works as Examiner for doctoral theses and Viva Voce e xaminations. Radha and his wife Lochana have two daughters. Dr Radhakrishnan continues to be active in social work and is a member of two NGOs in Chennai. He devotes a good part of his time to spiritual activities. 70

IIT and beyond Rangaswami was very popular and took part in Cricket, Te n n i s a n d Ta bl e Te n n i s. H e a l s o p l a y e d a H e r o i n Ta m i l dramas during Annual day celebrations. A f t e r g r a d u a t i o n , R a n g a j o i n e d L a r s e n & To u b r o i n 1 9 6 5 and his brilliant career all through took him to the position of President. He retired from L&T as Member of the Board of Directors in 2011, and continued to serve L&T f o r f o u r m o r e y e a r s a s A d v i s o r t o C h a i r m a n o f L & T. H e h a n d l e d m a n y p re s t i g i o u s p ro j e c t s d u r i n g h i s c a re e r, including Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi, Puttaparthy S u p e r S p e c i a l i t y H o s p i t a l , I n t e r n a t i o n a l Te c h n o l o g y Pa r k in Bangalore and HITEC City at Hyderabad. Ranga served as Director in a number of L&T Associated Companies and was also on the Board of Bangalore International Airports Limited. Ranga received the DA Award from IITM in 2002. Rangaswami and his wife Chitra live in Chennai. They have a son settled in USA. Ranga is socially engaged with children’s education through Tr usts and a Society mana ging six schools. He is also a Tr ustee mana ging fiv e temples in his villa ge in Ta m i l N a d u . 72

IIT and beyond After graduating from IITM, Sakaria did his Masters at PSG College of Engineering, Coimbatore. Sakaria’s entire career was devoted to Academics. His first assignment 1967-79 was as Faculty in Civil Engineering at TKM College of Engineering, Quilon. He then took a five-year sabbatical till 1984 to go as Professor in Civil Engineering to Federal University of Nigeria. Sakaria returned to TKM College Quilon and was Professor and Head of Civil Engineering Department till 1996. After a year’s assignment as Professor in Civil Engineering at Kar unya Univ ersity, Kottayam, Sakaria mov ed to SRM Univ ersity, Chennai as Professor and Head of De partment of Civil Engineering and was there 1997-2009. Notwithstanding his advancing years, Sakaria continued his academic career with Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam as Professor and Head of Civil Engineering Department for another nine years till 2018. IIT and beyond Samir excelled in studies at IITM and stood Second in his Branch. After graduation, he joined BBJ Construction Co, as Trainee but soon s witched in 1966 to West Bengal Engineering Service. For the next 38 years, Samir worked with the State Government service and retired in 2004 as C h i e f E n g i n e e r, U r b a n D e v e l o p m e n t a n d M u n i c i p a l Affairs. Whilst in Govt Service, Samir completed his Masters (ME) in 1st class (Second rank) from Calcutta University in 1971. In 1990, he was selected for appointment to the coveted IAS, but Samir chose to stay with WB State Government. I n 2 0 0 4 , S a m i r w a s i n d u c t e d a s Te c h n i c a l A d v i s o r i n t h e State Urban Development Agency (a State Govt. entity) and continued till 2016, with responsibility for planning, implementation and monitoring of development programmes in the Municipal and Corporation to wns of West Bengal. Samir continues his association with Institution of Public Health Engineers (IPHE). Samir and his wife Arundhati continue to live in Kolkata. 76

IIT and beyond After graduating in 1967, Sunandan – popularly called Ishu-da – was engaged for four years with a Private Civil C o n s t r u c t i o n f i r m i n b r i d g e c o n s t r u c t i o n o n t h e T i b e t b o rd e r. He then worked with L&T 1971-80 in different States on various projects including the prestigious Atomic Reactor in Kalpakkam and the Abu Dhabi International Airport. I s h u - d a w o r k e d w i t h To y o E n g i n e e r i n g o v e r 1 4 y e a r s i n t w o spells between 1981 and 2001 in various senior roles on diverse Fertiliser and Chemical projects in many States. His expertise and dedication in the field of Civil construction kept him engaged up to 2005 in different roles in supervision of residential, Office and Industrial complexes. Ishu-da was a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and a Chartered Engineer (India). H e w o n m a n y t r o p h i e s f o r R o w i n g a n d w a s a k e e n Ta bl e Te n n i s a n d C h e s s p l a y e r. After retirement, Sunandan involved himself in social work especially helping senior citizens. Ishu mar ried Shanta, a PhD in Physiolog y. He passed a way in 2010. Dr Shanta continues to live in Kolkata, as do her son, daughter and two grandchildren. 78
