IIT and beyond Basu John was the Headboy at St Bede’s High School before j o i n i n g I I T M a d r a s f o r h i s B Te c h a n d w a s a c t i v e i n c o l l e g e athletics. After graduating with the Governor’s Gold Medal from IITM in 1965, Basu did research at Schneider Optischer Werk e in Bad Kreuznach, Ger many. He later returned to Chennai and received his doctorate in Optics from IIT Madras and also started his working life as a Reader at IIT Madras. Dr Basu John later left the world of academics when he took over the running of the family business. He was the Managing Partner of Klein & Peyerl, Chennai, one of the oldest Photog ra phers and Blockmak ers in the countr y. He also entered the IT field in the mid-eighties when he started Mindspace, a corporate IT consultancy. Mindspace helped set up and run the computer lab and the first computer courses at Loyola College, Chennai. He was also a photographer of high repute; after the Gujarat Earthquake, he raised funds for the victims through a series of photog ra phic e xhibitions across the countr y. Dr Basu passed away in 2003. He is survived by his wife Mariamma who continues to live in Chennai, a son, daughter and four grandchildren. 152

IIT and beyond Bham y Venkatramana Shenoy, went from a r ural villa ge (Bantwal, Karanataka) to global village US in 1965 to get an MS in Industrial Engineering from Illinois Institute of Te c h n o l o g y, C h i c a g o a n d j o i n e d C o n o c o i n 1 9 6 6 . Bhamy worked at Conoco till 1986 in all facets of oil industry in USA, UK, Italy and Ireland. While working, he secured a PhD in Management Sciences from University of Houston. He returned to India in 1986 and worked for USAID from 1997 till 2009 to bring about oil sector reforms in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Geor gia, Ghana, Me xico and Venezuela. He ser v ed as a Board Member of Geor gian National Oil Company. During periods when he was free and till today, Bham y has been busy with bringing about systemic changes in India to f i g h t c o r r u p t i o n , i m p ro v e e d u c a t i o n s e c t o r, p ro m o t e environmental and consumer protection. Fighting corruption is his passion. In 1989, he started Mysuru Grahakara Parishat, a leading NGO in Mysuru. He is associated with Pratham Mysuru ever since its ince ption. He ser v es as a Tr ustee of r ural based NGO, Sehgal Foundation and as Board Member of Delhi based Consumer Voice. Bhamy lives in Mysuru and in USA, where his three children are settled. 154

IIT and beyond Esmail was a Gymnastics enthusiast and represented IITM at Inter IIT meets at Bombay, Khara gpur and Madras. He started his career with Bombay Oxygen Corp in April ‘65 as Asst Engineer; was involved in Design and Installation of various equipments and relocation of partial plant. Left for USA in August ‘67 and graduated in MS from Villanova Univ ersity. He then work ed for FMC Corp (‘67 to ‘71), Sun Ship Building (‘72 to ‘82), Newport News ShipBuilding (‘82 to ’96), Kvaerner Shipyard, various consulting companies including KBR Engineering, Jacobs Engineering (‘96 to 2013). During his long association with Ship Building Industry and Consultancy, Esmail designed various ship systems on tank ers and container ships, conducted testing of equipment and systems during ship construction and sea trial, worked on various equipment and systems on submarines and aircraft carriers and designed and participated in testing of the main engine. He also designed modular equipment packages, pressure vessels, etc and was involved in Plant Layouts. Married to Sakina (1967); has two daughters, one son, three g randchildren. Lives in Brookhaven, PA and enjoys travelling and gardening. 156

IIT and beyond After graduating in 1965, Prabhat worked for three years with Hindustan Motors in their Machine Shop. He left for USA in 1968 for a Master’s degree in Material Science, after which he worked for ten years with two Companies, including five with GE in Virginia. He then did his MBA in 1980-82. In 1982 Prabhat acquired a majority interest in Virginia Transfor mer Corp, then a Company of 35 employees. He led the team of engineers to create a premier Organisation and built it through organic and inorganic growth to become the second largest Power transformer manufacturing company in North America, for Transfor mers ranging from 1-1500MVA. As CEO, Prabhat heads the Company which employs 1400 associates in four manufacturing plants and is a significant e x p o r t e r. H e h a s s e v e ra l p a t e n t s t o h i s c re d i t . T h e P ra b h a t Jain family is the sole owner of the business. In addition to r unning his Company, Prabhat is an activ e member of the Roanok e, Vir ginia community, ser ving on their Chamber of Commerce, Manufacturer’s Association, Export C o u n c i l , Te c h n o l o g y C o u n c i l a n d C u l t u r a l a c t i v i t i e s. Returning to India, Patil joined IITM in 1971 as a Lecturer in Applied Mechanics Department. From 1972-1991, Patil worked in the Biomedical Engineering Department and became Professor in 1985. During this period, Patil was also a V i s i t i n g S c i e n t i s t i n E i n d h o v e n ( T h e N e t h e rl a n d s ) U. Te c h n o l o g y, 1 9 8 9 - 1 9 9 0 . Pa t i l w a s t h e H e a d o f A p p l i e d Mechanics Department from 1991-1994. He was also the Head of Biomedical Engineering Division of the Applied Mechanics Department before retirement in September 2002. Patil has to his credit 67 publications in international journals. After retirement, Patil settled in Belgaum India and was engaged in guiding students and part time research on Analysis of MRI Images of Brain for early diagnosis of and suggestions for cor rectiv e methods for Brain tissue patholog y. In 2004, Patil secured a Patent on Portable Pedopowergraph for diabetes diagnosis. Patil married Pushpa in 1969. Their son and daughter are well settled in life. Patil passed away in 2005. 160

Over the years 1965-78, he rose to the position of General Manager overseeing raw material procurement, production management and marketing. In 1978, NRV joined Vankos, Patna as Head of Design and Development of Hydraulically Operated Equipment, Devices and Systems. He then worked for several Firms from 1984 to 1990 and finall y joined Voith Turbo, Hyderabad, a Ger man Company specialising in manufacture of Mobile Equipment, De vices and Systems. During his stay with Voith, Rao contributed to the success of varied systems and devices, particularly introducing Retarders – a hydro-dynamic wear-free brake for passenger vehicles and automatic transmissions. He retired in 2006. Rao and his wife Nageswari happily divide their time b e t w e e n H yd e ra b a d a n d t h e U S w i t h t h e i r d a u g h t e r, s o n a n d four grandchildren. 162

IIT and beyond Padmanabhan (Pappan, nicknamed Paddy) actively participated in basketball and represented IITM in the Inter-IIT Games. After graduation in 1965, Paddy joined Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) as a Mana gement Trainee along with some of his batchmates. Responding to the National Emergency Call’s Short Service Commission, he joined the Indian Army and was posted in Ladakh 1966-70, rising to the rank of Captain. He returned to DSP and worked there 1970-95, then transferred to VISL Bhadravati. He sought voluntary retirement in 1998 and settled in Kochi, Kerala, close to his roots and his famil y. Upon retirement, Pappan joined his friends in a Waste Management initiative for environment-friendly collection, treat- ment and disposal of Municipal waste. Even as he suffered health challenges, he remained societally and sociall y activ e and often met friends and famil y. Pa ppan passed away peacefully on July 01, 2017. He married Geetha in 1971. She continues to live in Kochi and remains happily busy interacting with extended family and friends. Her small close-knit family – son in Dubai and married daughter in UK – visit often. 164

IIT and beyond After graduation, Prabhakaran completed ME (Machine Design) from IISc, Bangalore in 1967 and PhD in Mechanical E n g f r o m I I T, C h i c a g o i n 1 9 7 0 . O n r e t u r n t o I n d i a , h e w o r k e d a s A s s t P r o f e s s o r a t I I T, K a n p u r, during 1972-79. Later he moved back to US to teach and do research at the Old Dominion University(ODU); there he rose to the position of Eminent Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department. Prabhakaran has completed 50+ Research Projects, authored / co-authored over 60 technical papers/articles for leading journals, 5 Book chapters and 60+ conference proceedings. He is a Fellow of the Society for Experimental Mechanics and has been Editor of a jour nal, EXPERIMENTAL MECHANICS. He won a Best Paper Award from The Journal o f E x p e r i m e n t a l Te c h n i q u e s. O n i n v i t a t i o n , h e h a s p r e s e n t e d papers at several conferences and lectures at Indian Colleges/Universities; has also been an external examiner for doctoral dissertations in USA and India. He continues to pursue h i s p a s s i o n fo r t e a ch i n g a n d w r i t i n g a r t i cl e s, a t O D U. Prabhakaran has also written short stories and poems for Bhavan’s Journal and keenly explores the spiritual realm of God and Life. Prabhakaran and his wife Bharathi live in Virginia, USA. IIT and beyond After graduation in 1965, Gurnani joined American Refrigerator Co, Calcutta and worked for 10 years at various locations in Manufacturing, Sales, and Projects related to refrigeration and air-conditioning. He moved to Fawaz Refrigeration, Shar jah in 1976 and worked for 14 years in Project design and execution of prestigious projects. In1991, he mov ed to TGEM - Transgulf Electromec hanical Co – in Dubai, where he was responsible for management of various electromechanical projects and setting up a duct manufacturing unit. While at TGEM, Gurnani completed a part time MBA in 2002 from University of Missouri, USA. He was promoted as GM in 2005 and retired in 2008. In 2008, Gurnani moved back to Mumbai and took on Consulting assignments for a Middle East Organisation. Prabhu and his wife Bhavna, a Rehab Therapist, live in Mumbai. Their two sons and four grandchildren live in USA. His interests are watching cricket, travelling and managing his investments. 168

In 1966, he moved to Germany and worked there in three companies: Gutehoeffnungshuette, Bosch and Fritz Roth and got a certificate of specialisation in 1969 as Engineer in Welding. In August 1969, Prem mar ried his Venezuelan hitch hiking and adventure companion, Gloria Fer nández. T he couple had done t h re e l o n g re t u r n t r i p s t o g e t h e r, s t a r t i n g f ro m S t u t t g a r t t o Pa r i s, to Amsterdam and to Geneva. In September 1969, the couple took the transatlantic Donizetti from Genoa to La Guaira, Ve n e z u e l a . There, soon after arrival, Prem started working in the Department of Mechanical Design at the School of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Carabobo, Valencia. He work ed in the area of rene wable ener g y, on Stirling engines and developed a working prototype of a gamma model of it. Prem also designed equipment for rehabilitation, fixators and posturog ra phy. Finall y, he work ed in the Project De partment of a p r i v a t e u n i v e rs i t y ( U n i v e rs i d a d Te c n o l ó g i c a d e l C e n t r o ) f o r 15 years. IIT and beyond At IITM, Pritam joined the Madras Boat Club and won Inter national Regattas. He was also the Founder President of the IITM Film Club which showed movies every Sunday evening in the Open-Air Theatre. In 1965 he joined Hindustan Le v er as a Mana gement Trainee; he rose to be Profit Centre Head of their Agribusiness and left in 1990 to start his own venture, Hindustan Agrigenetics Ltd. - dealing in Hybrid Seeds and Tissue Culture. The firm had an IPO in 1994 and diversified into floriculture. Following liberalisation of the Import Policy, the Company faced turbulence through competition from cheap imports. Pritam is currently a Consultant specialising in Urban Development of cities. Pritam and his wife Archana (Kumkum) live in New Delhi. Their three daughters, all in the Advertising world, operate out o f N e w Yo r k , L o n d o n a n d M u m b a i . 172

Subsequently he was a Research Engineer at English Electric Co in UK and then spent over 4 years at the International Flame Research Foundation, Holland. Dr Pai joined the National Aeronautical Laborator y, Bengalur u in 1975 in the Propulsion Division. He became Director in 2 0 0 2 a n d s u p e ra n n u a t e d i n 2 0 0 4 . T h a t ye a r, I I T M re c o g n i s e d him as a Distinguished Alumnus. From 2006 to 2022, he ser v ed on the Board of Triton Valv es Limited, Bengalur u. Ram’s areas of research are in the field of Combustion, Heat Transfer and Ener g y Systems. He got his first patent while at IITM, has ten patents to his credit and over 75 publications. Ram is a keen flying enthusiast; he was an instructor for powered hang gliders and is qualified for solo flying of helicopters. He married Shakuntala in 1965; they have a son, a daughter and four grandchildren. Dr Pai is settled in Bengaluru. He continues to explore how Science can shed light on the deepest mysteries of nature, namely: Origin of the Universe, Origin of Life and Consciousness, which have long puzzled mankind. 174

IIT and beyond While at IITM, Rama Shetty played for IIT teams in tennis, cricket, and ball badminton. After graduation, he went to Calcutta and worked for Svenska Flaktfabriken in their manufacturing facility until August 1967. In September 1967 he joined the Illinois Institute of Te c h n o l o g y, C h i c a g o f o r h i s M a s t e r ’s d e g r e e i n I n d u s t r i a l Engineering and graduated in May 1969. He then joined the Harris Bank in Chicago in their O p e ra t i o n s R e s e a rch d e p a r t m e n t . L a t e r, h e m o v e d t o t h e Information Systems Group and worked in various capacities. The areas of work included Systems Software, Data Security, Disaster Recov er y, Computer Ca pacity Planning, and Y2K Conversion. He retired as Vice President in June 2000. Rama and his wife Neena have two children and two grandchildren. During his retirement years, Rama has taken up Income Ta x a d v i s i n g a s a n e w c h a l l e n g e . H e h a s c o n t i n u e d h i s passion for tennis and added golf to his regular sporting activities. He w o n m a n y d e b a t i n g c o m p e t i t i o n s a t I I T. Ramesh joined IITD as Associate Lecturer for 6 months and in July '65 joined the DCM/Shriram Group as Senior Mana gement Trainee. He spent 14 years in various functions in different companies of the Group. Moved to Nigeria 1979-84 as MD of two Plastics Packaging Companies which were turned around and expanded; returned to Delhi and started 2 new Divisions for Inalsa Ltd., manufacturing Small Home Appliances/FHP motors and Flexible Stainless-Steel Hoses. Sold both businesses in 1999; later he moved to IT H/ware. Retired in 2012 as Exec. Vice-Chairman of Intex Te c h n o l o g i e s ( I n d i a ) L t d . E n g a g e d s i n c e t h e n i n a d v i s o r y assignments in Manufacturing Cranes, AC components, etc. He has been a member of several Committees of CII, FICCI, M A I T, I C E A a n d C E A M A . :IUM[PIVLPQ[_QNM=[PITQ^ MQV6M _,MTPQ< PM aPI^ M±\\_W sons and three grandchildren. On retur ning to India in 1967, he joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited where he worked initially in the Engine Complex, Bengaluru and later in HAL, Nasik unit. On returning to HAL, Bengaluru, Ranga was among the first few HAL engineers who worked on the indigenous design of helicopters. After serving HAL for 16 years, he moved to Amalgamation (Exide Group) where he worked for 5 years in the development of maintenance-free batteries. Subsequently he was selected to join Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and worked in the design of Aircraft General Systems for the development of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) which was later christened as TEJAS. He retired from ADA after completing eighteen years of service. Ranga is well-known for his flair for the English language and English poetr y. His two sons are mar ried and settled in USA; he has three granddaughters. Ranga and his wife have settled down in Bengaluru and visit USA now and then to spend time with their famil y. 180

Saha spent 47 years with the KSB Group and retired in 2013 as the MD of KSB Shanghai, China. Back home in 2013, he started Consultancy which continues. Puri earned an excellent reputation in BHEL for his contributions in various disciplines of a production or ganisation, such as Machine Erection, Productivity, Resource Planning, Production Planning & Control, Quality Management, Project Management, Management Services, Budgeting, IT and Human Resource Development. Puri acquired proficiency in Russian language which proved very useful during his deputation to LMW & Electrocila plants in St.Petersburg, Russia and KhEMZ plant in Kharkiv, Ukraine in 1967-68. He also learnt German (technical) language which helped him during his work in 1984-87 at Siemens KWU in M u e l h e i m - R u h r, G e r m a n y. IIT and beyond DBV Sharma was one of very few students from rural b a c k g r o u n d t o j o i n I I T. A f t e r c o m p l e t i n g B Te c h , S h a r m a joined Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) in 1965. He served DSP until April 1982 in the Production and EDP departments. As h e a d o f E D P, S h a r m a p l a n n e d f o r i t s g r o w t h a n d e x p a n s i o n and introduced productivity linked incentive scheme. He then moved to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), an integrated plant on a green field site. There, Sharma was instrumental in planning and implementation of hierarchically integrated management information and control systems. This was done first time in Indian steel industr y. He retired as General Mana ger (Systems) from VSP in 2003. Post-retirement, Sharma worked as IT consultant to Engineering colleges and Industry and as Professor in Computer Science & Engineering. He was also ver y active in the Computer Society of India (CSI) at national, regional and local levels and held several positions in CSI. DBV Sharma and his wife live in Visakhapatnam. IIT and beyond After graduating in 1965, Shaikh Abdul Khadar worked in a large integrated paper mill, and later joined the National Productivity Council where he spent the best part of his career and made significant contributions. A long the way, he obtained from A IP, Chennai a PG Diploma in Industrial Engineering, from West Ger many a Diploma in Production Management and a Certificate from MTM Association as MTM Practitioner For over four decades, Khadar was a member of several gover nment and professional missions in India, for strengthening productivity, quality control and management consultancy in enhancing enterprise level P&Q and Competitiveness. In addition, he had a short tenure as a faculty member at IIT Delhi. He delivered the Maiden Foundation Day Lecture on the 10th Anniversary of Nigerian Productivity Centre in Abuja during 1997. Currently Principal Consultant of his own firm - SAK C onsultants & A ssoc iates & Visiting Professor, Khadar renders training & consultancy based on his copy-righted model of ‘Self-Assessment Approach to Competitiveness Enhancement’. He also teaches ‘Consultancy Management’ in Management Institutes in Ne w Delhi. His e- lear ning lessons on implementing Total Quality Management through the Asian Productivity Organization website are very popular with production managers spread over various Asian countries. 188

IIT and beyond Siddhartha, popularly known as ‘SID’, was an outstanding ‘Debater’ during IIT days and he won several individual and team trophies, along with his batch-mate Ramesh A Vaswani. After graduating in 1965, SID was educated at Crawford I n s t i t u t e o f Te c h n o l o g y a n d I m p e r i a l C o l l e g e L o n d o n a n d spent a year at the Science Policy Research Unit at Sussex. H e t h e n j o i n e d t h e D e p a r t m e n t o f S c i e n c e & Te c h n o l o g y, GOI. Subsequentl y, Dr Siddhartha was associated with CSIR, ISRO and DRDO, New Delhi in various top positions. He was also Secretary of the Science Advisory Council to PM and Consultant – UN Environment Programme. Retired from DRDO in 2004 as Emeritus Scientist; since then SID has served on various UN Committees and been associated in India at senior positions with MEA for Export Control Systems, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Aeronautical Society, United Ser vice Institution, Educational Board at the ‘Current Science’, Indian Academy of Science, Zaheer Science Foundation and National Maritime Foundation. SID married Gita in 1977. They live in Delhi and SID continues to be activ e professionall y. 190
