Drum Corps International wrapped up its 35th anniversary celebration during a record- breaking World Championships on the West Coast in 2007. As a new season stepped off into a full marching stride, several drum corps had already been marking their own anniversary milestones in 2008, including two of the Midwest's most storied corps. the This story begins with a drink. Two, to be precise, which may have led to more. Most of the particulars are lost to history. What we do know is this: Back in the days when rival drum corps sometimes traded punches along with contest victories, the leaders of two top Midwestern corps stood before a bar in Chicago. Clarence Beebe's Madison Scouts were in town and Don Warren's boys were playing host at Cavalier Hall. You had to climb a mess of stairs to reach the Cavaliers' stronghold, located above Ferrera's tavern near the corner on Kedzie. The solemn din of adults talking likely drifted up on the cigarette smoke from downstairs as boys in sleeping bags whispered, the lights out, pool and ping pong tables pushed to the corners and all those trophies on shelves dully gleaming. At the bar, Beebe stood in his Boy Scout uniform, a big, jolly guy, the picture of a Scoutmaster. And Warren, at his elbow, gnawed a cigar, blue-green eyes glittering. \"Would ya like a drink?\" Warren asked. Beebe frowned. \"I can't. I'm in uniform.\" Warren blinked at the man's green Explorer Scouts shirt, buttons stuffed to bursting. It was all he could do to choke down a chuckle. But he could tell Beebe was dead serious.
\"Well,\" Warren said, \"do you mind if I have one?\" Admiring them from the stands was 18-year-old Don Beebe waved OK. Warren began mixing a martini. Drum Corps International Chairman of the Board of Directors I would like to welcome you to one of the World's most spectacular displays of youthful exuberance and performance excellence, the 2008 Drum Corps International Summer Tour and World Championships! The shows you will see this evening are filled with energy and passion that only a stage the size of a football field is able to contain. These young performers are drawn to the drum corps activity to be a part of this- the place where the most dedicated and talented individuals come together to perform in front of thousands of enthusiastic fans in towns small and large all across North America. Their efforts are sure to leave you breathless and inspired! When these corps members leave the field for the last time, they realize that they have experienced something far more profound than a performance. They have transitioned into adulthood, prepared with the understanding that excellence in life and all endeavors is the result of personal discipline and the ability to motivate those around you to achieve common goals and aspirations. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors of Drum Corps International, I would like to thank all of the young performers, their staffs, designers and the entire network of support workers and volunteers whose tireless efforts have brought us together today. Most importantly, I would like to thank you, our fans. Your support of this wonderful activity has made it possible for us to provide this experience to the thousands of young people who have been a part of Drum Corps International for each of the past 36 years. Drum Corps International Executive Director ~V<e ll <C <O> 1nnt <e Dear Friends: It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2008 Drum Corps International Summer Tour and the DCI World Championships in Indiana. We are extremely proud to have played a part in setting the stage for the most spectacular marching music performances on the planet. The corps on the field are comprised of exceptional young people eager to deliver dazzling performances which will leave you spellbound and wanting more. Your enthusiastic appreciation of these \"ultimate performances\" will be the single most important measure defining their drum corps experience. Whether you are a fan, a corps volunteer, an instructor, judge, or performer, you have undoubtedly felt the impact of current economic challenges. This year, the non-profit organizations that make it possible for these young people to participate in the tour have no doubt struggled to maintain the high quality of experience their members have come to expect, however the corps continue to amaze us all with what they produce. The members of the Drum Corps International family of corps are fortunate to have incredibly dedicated parents and volunteers surrounding and supporting them every step of the way. Drum Corps International is itself a non-profit organization, with the mission of providing support for its member corps. DCI is also facing and addressing many economic challenges beyond our control. Our ability to continue our mission of serving the world's most elite and exclusive marching ensembles for student musicians and performers can only be accomplished with the tremendous support of our incredibly loyal fans, through ticket and merchandise purchases including this souvenir yearbook. Thank you! We are truly grateful that you have shown your support for the youth who participate in the corps of Drum Corps International. We are also ecstatic that you have chosen to continue to keep the drum corps experience as a part of your life. In so doing, you are helping to ensure the future of an activity which takes highly motivated and gifted young people and molds them into exceptional leaders. Once again, on behalf of all the participating corps and the good people who surround them, I express my utmost gratitude to you for sharing your appreciation and enjoyment for those who will delight you through their performances. Most Gratefully, fs~f- ~ Daniel E. Acheson, Executive Director/CEO Drum Corps International DCI Souvenir Yearbook 127
