OpenPlay solutions power workflow and process management for some of the world’s largest entertainment companies. Supporting Sponsors Metadata is the foundation of the entire digital music industry, but many people don’t know it because the sizzle factor remains low. Over the last five years, Music Biz has fought to change that with the Metadata Summit, amplifying the importance of data, providing a high level forum for discussion, and attracting key participants. The 6th Annual Metadata Summit is for experts, by experts. This full-day of programming will feature lively discussions among these key participants and an audience looking to take music metadata to the next level. 9 – 9:30 AM Metadata Summit Welcome & Acronym Update Presenter Bill Wilson Digital Programming & Industry Relations Music Business Association89 @musicbizassoc @musicbizassoc
TUES • MAY 159:30 – 10 AMYour Metadata S#*ks!Our industry is evolving at an incredible pace, towardintuitive discovery, exploration and experimentation. Cuttingedge technologies power these new creative paradigmsincluding AI learning algorithms, voice-enabled devices, complex pattern recognition engines, and high res audio. At the core of every single one of these technologies is onesingular building block, the DNA behind all of these creativetechnologies: Metadata. We’re way past the point ofsimply needing an artist, title, and genre. We must elevatethe metadata experience to future proof every part of thesupply chain. Whether you are an artist, a label, a distributor,a PRO, or a service provider -- all have a critical role to playin supporting those who are solving the problem. Presenter Edward Ginis Co-Founder OpenPlay10 – 10:40 AMRejected! The Most Common ErrorsStyle guide violations, audio language, missing explicit tagsare just three of the many reasons that metadata errorslead to releases being rejected by DSPs. These errors leadto increased time and expense and possibly even missinga street date for an artist. This panel will address questionssuch as: What are the top reasons that releases are rejectedby DSP’s? What solutions are currently out there for cleaningup catalog data? Given the swift adoption of voice search, what new fields may cause a release to be rejected? Moderator Bill Wilson Digital Programming & Industry Relations Music Business Association#MusicBiz2018 90

TUES • MAY 1510:40 – 11 AMMusic Data Exchange: Linking Recordingsand CompositionsThe lack of an efficient workflow to establish timely andauthoritative linking of compositions to sound recordings isan incredible stumbling block in the music industry, arguablythe most inefficient link in today’s royalty chain. Whena label releases a track, it is frequently (almost always?)unclear who the publisher is and/or what their royalty shareof that composition is. The problem is compounded by thefact that many songs have multiple writers and multiplepublishers. The need to make this link and establish shareswon’t ever go away. The Fix: In cooperation with U.S. record labels and musicpublishers, SoundExchange has developed and launcheda hub that centralizes the exchange of data betweenlabels and publishers, gives publishers full visibility to claimedand unclaimed percentages and allows publishers tocommunicate their shares. The new Music Data Exchange(MDX) portal provides a workflow and central databasefor real-time, pre-release, highly automated (via DDEXmessaging), efficient exchanges of data, resulting in owner-established links between new release recordings and theirunderlying compositions. Not a moment too soon. TUES • MAY 15 1:20 – 1:40 PM So, You’re Licensed Into China … Now What? China is opening up rapidly in terms of inbound digital licensing, but what happens once your license is in place? In reality, this is just the beginning, not least because Chinese platforms typically don’t WANT the content, they have it already. Rather than expecting the floodgates to open, China still needs to be seen as a very long play. This period may be known in retrospect as “the age of metadata” insofar as the priority for all rights owners should be to pump the market with metadata, readying for the next step which is reporting and accounting. Only then does marketing a record really make sense. This informal workshop with Ed Peto and Alex Taggart of leading China music industry services company, Outdustry, is designed to put things in perspective— with a good dose of myth-busting, w hile also providing hard won practical insights as to how to tackle the market with a long view. TUES • MAY 1512 – 12:50 PM Legends GMerlin’s 10th Anniversary: IndiesLeading The Global Digital BusinessTo say Merlin has transformed the digital music market isno exaggeration. Ten years ago, independent labels anddistributors faced a Catch 22 situation: perfectly suited tothe entrepreneurial spirit of online innovation, but penalizedat the negotiating table. While DSPs could secure majorlabel repertoire via a handful of deals, partnering with indieswas more challenging. It might involve hundreds (if notthousands) of conversations. Opening for business in May 2008, Merlin was tasked withending this market fragmentation — building trust and unityacross the independent sector to enable digital servicesto globally license — via a single deal — the world’s mostimportant and commercially successful distributors andlabels. Initially representing 200 members, Merlin’s firstpartnership was struck Spotify. Agreements with other new-generation services followed, as well as groundbreakingcopyright settlements with infringing P2P platforms. Thesubsequent impact has been profound, and helped unlockthe true market value of independent music.Today, Merlin represents the most valuable basket of rightsoutside of UMG, Sony and Warner Music. Independentbusinesses are positioned front and center in licensingnegotiations, while their rights are correctly valued. And, ina best-of-both-worlds scenario, alongside empowerment, independent labels have retained their independence. The agency currently has 800 members in 53 countries -representing tens of thousands of individual labels - andrecently dispatched its billionth dollar in distributions.Celebrating their 10th anniversary, join Merlin CEO CharlesCaldas for a comprehensive discussion that exploresnot only the market challenges Merlin has enabledindependent labels to overcome, but also how Merlin itselfoperates, how those labels interact with Merlin, and howthey have utilized the agency to grow their digital business.Expect the discussion to cover Merlin’s groundbreakingimpact on the wider digital market, offering DSPs a singleentry point to successfully navigate the global independentlabel sector and how that has undoubtedly transformedtheir businesses too. So, how can an artist determine what is the best option for their career? This panel will explore the relevance of the artist-label relationship in the digital era through the lens of the recording agreement. TUES • MAY 1512:30 – 1:20 PM Legends DThe Post-Catalogue Era: HowStreaming Is Resetting the RecordedIndustry’s Business ModelRevenues from catalogue sales have long underpinned themajor record label model, yet this framework is coming toan end. Until breaking a new act, A&R typically operatedat a loss whilst catalogue represented a growth fund fromwhich labels invested in future talent. The positive side of thiswas that it facilitated an appetite for risk in emerging artists, yet this model stands at a crossroads where cataloguesales, in the traditional sense, are going to fall.Younger music consumers have not grown up buyingalbums and are spending less time both listening to albumsand listening to individual albums multiple times. As aresult, the foundations for deep diving into catalogue arenot being set up for them, with streaming engenderingaudiences to focus on the new. Add Gen Z’s tendencytowards consuming, at speed, larger volumes of (usuallysocial) content, and what you have is the catalyst for areassessment of how the economics of the entire recordedmusic business works.Using proprietary MIDiA Research data, this presentation willtake a look at how the old model worked and discuss how itis being threatened by streaming.
