DIOCESAN PRAYER BANDDIOCESAN PRAYER BAND REPORT FROM MAY 2015 TO APRIL 2016SUBMITTED TO THE FIRST SESSION OF THE TWELFTH SYNOD OFTHE DIOCESE OF WARRI HOLDEN AT ST. Revd Christian Esezi Ide, JP as well as ourmother in Israel, Mrs. Patience O.E. Ide, Bishop of the Diocese of Warri as the primary and functional prayingbody of the Diocese saddled with a divine mandate, coupled with the responsibility andcommitment of interceding for the spiritual and physical health and growth of theDiocese. The Diocesan Prayer Band is also committed to sensitizing and mobilizingevery Parish/Chapel/Archdeaconry to have a functional and productive Prayer Bandwith a view of making every congregation a praying congregation, Parish, Chapel orArchdeaconry. This is with a vision of making every true Anglican a praying and result-oriented Christian.MONTHLY NIGHTVIGILThe Diocesan Prayer Band holds a regular all-night prayer programme once everymonth which is usually on the third Friday, except where there is a DiocesanAll-night ina particular month, and in that case the Diocesan Prayer Band will have to be involved inthe DiocesanAll-night.The Statutory All-night Programme is meant for all Prayer Band members in thedifferent Parishes, Chapels and Archdeaconries. The programme creates a forum forpractical experience of co-operate prayers and intercession with result-oriented faith. The All-night programme is usually rotated from one Archdeaconry to another andfrom one Parish/Chapel to another depending on the ease of accessibility to PrayerBand members.BEGINNING THE YEAR WITH THE LORD ALLNIGHT PROGRAMME:To beginning the Diocesan activities for the year 2016, an allnight prayer programmewas organised. This programme was held on Friday 16th January 2016with the theme:“We are Family” and was attended by all Diocesan Officials and Parish Leaders andWorkers under the leadership of our lord bishop. The venue was the Cathedral of St.Andrew,22,Okere Road,Warri.157 THEME: “THE PEACE OF GOD WHICH Date: SAT. 7TH – WED.11TH MAY, 2016 TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING.” Venue: ST. REPORTS TO THE FIRST SESSION OF THE TWELFTH SYNODDIOCESAN PRAYER CONVOCATIONThe Diocesan Prayer Band usually organizes an Annual Prayer Convocation, which is aprayer oriented gathering which brings together all the Prayer Band members and allother interested members in the Diocese for the purpose of spiritual overalling,revival,renewal,renovation,repositioning,reviewing,re-examination and refiring, with a view ofhaving and sustaining formidable and viable prayer programmes in all the Parishes andChapels. The Diocesan Prayer Convocation for 2015 was held from Thurs. 17th – Sat. 19thSeptember 2015 at St. Peter's Church, 6Ekpan.The theme was “Sustaining the Faith ofthe Church on theAltar of Prayer”.Acts 4:29.The 2016 Diocesan Prayer Convocation is proposed to hold in September 2016.Wesincerely appeal to all the Parishes, Chapels and Archdeaconries to encourage, mobilisesponsor their members to attend the forth coming Prayer Convocation 2016. Detailswill be forwarded to the Parishes/Chapels andArchdeaconries later.DIOCESAN PRAYER BULLETINThe Diocesan Prayer Bulletin titled “ALTAR ON FIRE” was designed as a medium ofcommunication across the Diocese and beyond, on life edifying, prayer provoking andtestimony manifesting issues, sustained by the laudable free-will sponsorship of somemembers, the bulletin is distributed free of charge to all Parishes and Chapels in theDiocese. To keep the bulletin in circulation, the call for sponsorship to the tune of N50,000 per edition is highly solicited for the four quarters of the year.CLERGY &WIVESALLNIGHT PROGRAMME:A special night vigil was organised for the Diocesan Clergy and their wives at thebishopscourt on Fri.19th of June 2015,with the theme:“Be focussed in Ministry” It was anight of Divine Settlement and Spiritual Renewal. It was indeed a blessing to the house ofClergy and the Diocese at large.PRE-SYNODALLNIGHT PROGRAMME:Pre-Synod Allnight Programme was organised on Friday 29th April, 2016 to promotethe successful execution of the Synod 2016. It was held at St. James Church, Ojabugbe,Warri. It was well attended by the Synod delegates,Diocesan Prayer Band Members andsome members of the hosting church. It was a fruitful vigil as the on-going Synod is atestimony to that fact.PROVINCIAL & NATIONAL PRAYER INVOLVEMENTSThe Diocesan Prayer Band had been strongly involved in Provincial & National PrayerConvocations so as to further enrich and develop the Prayer Band members and hence, provoke their commitment at the Diocesan,Archdeaconry and Parish or Chapel levels. The 2015 Provincial Prayer Convocation was held from Thursday 1st – Saturday 3rd158 THEME: “THE PEACE OF GOD WHICH Date: SAT. 7TH – WED.11TH MAY, 2016 TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING.” Venue: ST. JAMES ANG. CHURCH,
REPORTS TO THE FIRST SESSION OF THE TWELFTH SYNODOctober 2015 at the Cathedral of St.Andrew, 22, Okere Road,Warri. The theme was“Intercession in the healing of the Nations” 2Chron. 7:14, Ezek. 47:1-12. It was also avery challenging programme, geared towards equipping the intercessors for effectiveintercession for the healing of the nations. Plenary Sections, Workshops, etc wereamong some of the activities observed. The National Prayer Convocation 2015 was held at Christ Anglican Church, Owerri inthe Diocese of Owerri from June 29 – July 3,2015.TheTheme was“StandingTogether inPrayers for the church and the Nations” (Matt. 18:19, Ezek. 22:30). It was well attendedby the Diocesan Prayer Band members, under the sponsorship of the Parishes andChapels. It was indeed very enriching, reviving and fulfilling.MANIFEST 2016The Diocesan Prayer Band was actively involved in the programme, operating regularprayers before, during and after the programme. The practice of chain prayers was alsoapplied to call for heavenly visitation and complete success of the programme. ThePrayer Band had to visit the MANIFEST CITY a week to the commencement of theprogramme for“on the spot” prayers.Thank God the programme was a great success.MAJOR CHALLENGESThere are a few challenges beclouding the Diocesan Prayer Band which are threateningincreasing commitments of members. They are as stated below:(1) Absence ofViable Prayer Band Unit: Some Parishes/Chapels do not have viable Prayer Band and as such are not represented at Diocesan Prayer Band meetings. In some cases when such Parishes/Chapels play host to the Diocesan Prayer Band, Prayer Band members and other members are not even available to participate in the programme.(2) Lack of Sponsorship/Poor Sponsorship: Some Parishes/Chapels Prayer Band members had suffered very serious financial problems in their bid to attend prayer programmes at Diocesan, Provincial and National levels as some Parishes/Chapels had maintained that there is no money. This has made some to sponsor themselves and at other times supported or sponsored by other persons. This can be very discouraging to the commitment of members.(3) Defective Information Dissemination: Defective information dissemination is a problem that has adversely affected the attendance of intercessors to Diocesan, Provincial and National prayer programmes. Even when information are sent to Parishes/Chapels, intercessors still complain of not getting information at all or as at when due. Sometimes, there is no announcement or reflection in the bulletins. This has made representatives from some parishes and chapels to be absent from prayer programmes continuously. This problem is further compounded by the fact that159 THEME: “THE PEACE OF GOD WHICH Date: SAT. 7TH – WED.11TH MAY, 2016 TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING.” Venue: ST. JAMES ANG. CHURCH,
REPORTS TO THE FIRST SESSION OF THE TWELFTH SYNOD some Parishes/Chapels do not have Prayer Band Leaders and Assistants to coordinate prayer activities in the Parish/Chapel level.(4) Lack of Parish Members Involvement atAllnight: Some of the Parishes that the Diocesan Prayer Band goes to for the statutory allnight do not usually have their church members in attendance, though information was sent out. Parish members will be powerfully sensitized when they are encouraged and mobilized to attend such allnights.(5) Conflicting Programmes: The Diocesan Prayer Band has a statutory day for monthly Allnight prayer programme. This is the third Friday of every month. But, it has been observed severally that some Parishes andArchdeaconries fix allnight programmes on that same Friday, hence, making it difficult for the prayer band members of those Parishes andArchdeaconries to attend the Diocesan Prayer BandAllnight. In some other cases, the Diocesan Prayer Band have had to change the Allnight venuefrom the Parish it is expected to hold to another. This challenge is gradually growing in ageometric progression and needs to be addressed quickly.APPRECIATION&APPEAL:His lordship, the Rt.Rev.C.E.Ide,JP is highly appreciated for his unshakeable support forthe Diocesan Prayer Band. The Diocesan Prayer Band appreciates sincerely the very few clergy who attend theallnight regularly.A passionate appeal is made to the house of the clergy to encouragethe intercessors with their presence. The Diocesan Prayer Band is also grateful to thoseVicars/Chaplains of Parishes/Chapelswho supported the activities of the Prayer Band through the release of their buses forthe transportation of members to locations outside Warri and Effurun for all-nightprogrammes.May GodAlmighty bless you all.Amen. YOUTH WEEK CELEBRATION The last youth week celebration was well celebrated throughout the diocese from Monday 7th-Sunday 13th Sept'2015 with the theme “GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT IS GREAT GAIN” (1Tim. 6:6). This program has actually helped the youth ministry in many ways, such as developing and uplifting their God given talent although we still have some parishes that could not celebrate theirs due to clashes of program by their local churches, and this adversely affected our youth week proceed,we also use these opportunity to call for more support by the church authority to enable the youth function adequately.4.5. BIBLE STUDY We were fully committed to the study of the word through the use of the unified national bible study outline. During this period under review, the Diocesan Bible study conference was well attended and all the guest speakers were seasoned servants of God from our own Anglican Communion. Awards were given to the past executives for their commitment and dedication to the growth of the work of God. WELFARE The fellowship also made the welfare of members a priority as members who were faced with various kinds of challenges and those with various forms of celebration/event were attended to, notably is Sis. Ufuoma Ikpesa who lost the husband (Bro. John Ikpesa theVP of Christ Church Unit) and the fellowship had to pay her rent up front for one year and this has greatly affected the fellowship positively.4.7. REPORTS TO THE FIRST SESSION OF THE TWELFTH SYNOD14. SYNOD 2016 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINETHEME:TEXT: THE PEACE OF GODTHAT TRANSCENDSALL UNDERSTANDING. PHILIPPIANS 4:7. And the peace of God,which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.GENERAL INTRODUCTIONThe early church was unanimous in its testimony that Philippians was written by theapostle Paul (see 1:1). The church at Philippi was established during Paul's secondmissionary journey (49-52A.D.),when he received a vision atTroas. In the vision, a man of Macedonia pleaded, \"Come over to Macedonia and help us.\"Perceiving that the Lord was calling them to go to Macedonia, they sailed from Troas(Luke having joined them) and eventually arrived at Philippi (Acts 16:6-12).With theconversion of Lydia (Acts 16:13-15) and the Philippian jailor (Acts 16:25-34), thechurch was established at Philippi. There were two reasons Paul wrote this letter:Philippians is a thank you note from a missionary to a supporting church. The second reason was due to a conflict between two women. He mentions andnames them in 4:1-2. (Euodia and Syntyche).Euodia and Syntyche could represent anytwo believers who are at odds with each other. Notice that whatever the rights andwrongs were,Paul's concern was to get the quarrel sorted out and peace restored. The word “Peace”,shalom, in Hebrew is a word with several different meanings in theOld and New Testaments. The Old Testament meaning of peace wascompleteness, soundness, and well-being of the total person. This peace wasconsidered God-given, obtained by following the Law (Ps 119:165). Peace sometimeshad a physical meaning, suggesting security (Ps 4:8),contentment (Isa 26:3),prosperity(Ps 122:6-7) and the absence of war (1 Sam 7:14).The traditional Jewish greeting, shalom, was a wish for peace. The word \"peace\" eireinei,in Greek refers to a mental attitude of tranquility based on a relationship withGod in the Christian Way of Life. It is a word which describes the result of a person'scorrect response to God's Grace. This understanding was originally expressed in theOldTestament writings about the coming Messiah (Isa 9:6-7).The peace that Jesus Christ spoke of was a combination of hope, trust, and quiet in themind and soul, brought about by reconciliation with God.Such peace was proclaimed bythe host of angels at Christ's birth (Luke 2:14), and by Christ Himself in His Sermon OnThe Mount (Matt 5:9) and during His ministry. He also taught about this kind of peace atthe Lord's Supper, shortly before His death (John 14:27).The apostle Paul later wrotethat such peace and spiritual blessedness was a direct result of faith in Christ (Rom 5:1).190 THEME: “THE PEACE OF GOD WHICH Date: SAT. 7TH – WED.11TH MAY, 2016 TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING.” Venue: ST. REPORTS TO THE FIRST SESSION OF THE TWELFTH SYNOD SYNOD 2016 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE: DAY ONE (MONDAY)THEME: THE PEACE OF GODTHAT TRANSCENDSALL UNDERSTANDING.SUBTHEME: GOD'S PEACE ISA GIFT.TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 4:1-9,2THESSALONIANS 3:16-18, JOHN 14:25-27;16:29-33AIM: To appreciate that God's peace is a gift from Him to those who believe in Him.INTRODUCTION: Peace, properly, is that state of mind in which persons areexposed to no open violence to interrupt their tranquility. It could be Social peace,Ecclesiastical peace or Spiritual peace. Social peace is mutual agreement one withanother, whereby we forbear injuring one another (Ps 34:14). Ecclesiastical peace isfreedom from contentions, and rest from persecutions (Isaiah32:17). Spiritual peace isdeliverance from sin, by which we were at enmity with God (Rom 5:1); the result ispeace in the conscience (Heb. 10:22).This peace is the gift of God through Jesus Christ(2Thess 3:16).It is a blessing of great importance (Ps 119:165).Jesus Christ is the Princeof peace and every follower of His has an inheritance of living a peaceful life in spite ofthe turmoil. We can't have the pleasing, life-transforming privileges of God's peacewithout first meeting God's requirements. Colossians 1:20 says that through JesusChrist,\"God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heavenand on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross\" (NLT). The only way we willexperience the peace of God that passes all human understanding is through the bloodof the cross, the blood Jesus shed. God's gift of Jesus was a gift of peace for you and metoday. It is because of Jesus that we can have peace on the inside, peace on the outside, and peace with God.Jesus Christ is also seen as the One who gives peace.Jesus said,\"Mypeace I give to you.\" Notice He says \"My peace.\" Here is the key to the super-naturalness of this peace: it is His own personal peace. It is the same deep, rich peacethat stilled His heart in the midst of mockers, haters, murderers, traitors, and everythingelse He faced. In the midst of incomprehensible resistance and persecution, Jesus wascalm. In fact, Christ is seen throughout the New Testament as the dispenser of peace.Jesus Christ gives us His own personal peace. It has been tested; it was His own shieldand His own helmet that served Him in battle. And He gave it to us when He left. Itshould give us the same serenity in danger, the same calm in trouble, and the samefreedom from anxiety.QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION1. “God's gift of Jesus was a gift of peace for you and me today”. Colossians 1:20 Discuss.2. What do you think Jesus meant when He promised to leave us Hispeace? (John 14:27).3. Does having Jesus' peace means we'll never have troubles? Why or why not? REPORTS TO THE FIRST SESSION OF THE TWELFTH SYNOD4. How do we obtain this gift (Peace)? (Philippians 4:5-7,Matthew 6:33).5. Why are people rejecting this gift? (John 3:19-21)CONCLUSION: God is the only real giver of peace, man will have to meet God'sconditions or do without. There's no other source for peace. Man can't buy it at anyprice. God has the product, and no one else does. If man wants peace, he will have to goto God and get it: \"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and allthese things shall be added unto you.\" (Mat. 6:33).When will man find peace? When heseeks the kingdom of God and his righteousness.Self-righteousness is man's problem.FOOD FORTHOUGHT:You can't have the peace of God until you first have peace with God.MEMORY VERSE: 2 THESSALONIANS 3:16b. Every sinner is a slave of sin.He has been enslaved by sin.He has no peace. There is always a war within, caused by the lust for pleasure inside theheart of every sinner. His heart is never rested from agitating passions or moral conflict.Even if you have decided to sear your conscience with hot iron (1Tim.4:2) so that itbecomes insensitive to the things of God,that only gives you an uneasy quiet. You will stillhave no peace within and without.Your life only will be opened up to more troubles.Foryou to have peace, you must receive the Prince of Peace and be saved from your sins. Two verses from Isaiah make the matter clear \"There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto thewicked\" (Isa 48:22); \"And the work of righteousness shall be peace\" (Isa 32:17).Condemnation means that God declares us sinners, which is a declaration of war.Justification means that God declares us righteous, which is a declaration of peace, madepossible by Christ's death on the cross.\"Peace with God\" is the result of faith in Christ (Rom 5:1); \"the peace of God\" and thepresence of \"the God of peace\" will come when the believer practices right thinking, rightpraying, and right living.Worry is tension between the mind and heart. The peace of Godwill guard our hearts and minds if we but meet the conditions He gives.QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION1. What did you understand by, “Peace with God” (Rom 5:1), “the Peace of God” (Phil.4:7) and“the God of Peace” (Rom.15:33).2. Have you experienced the real peace that God gives? Explain how it happened.3. Discuss how you got convinced that you are at peace with God now. What is the difference between your life now and that before?4. One can never expect to get along with others unlessone recognizes the value of peace.Happiness is a frame of mind.Getting along withothers requires a proper frame of mind. Peace is something that should be pursued.“Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it” (Ps. 34:14).What does theBible say about the wicked who refuse to seek peace? “There is no peace, saith theLORD, unto the wicked” (Isa. 48:22). Most people desire to be happy, but many aredeprived of happiness because they are unable to live in peace with others.Peter wrote:“For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue fromevil, and his lips that they speak no guile. Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seekpeace, and ensue it” (1 Pet. 3:10-11). James adds:“And the fruit of righteousness is sownin peace of them that make peace” (Jas.3:18).What are the fruits of righteousness?“Andthe work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness andassurance forever.” “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offendthem” (Ps.119:165).There is a reason the Bible instructs:“Follow peace with all men, andholiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Heb.12:14).Recognizing the value of peace is one thing, but without the desire to achieve it we willbe unable to live in harmony. How much happiness does one experience while bickeringand arguing? Not much. Many insist in getting in the “last word.” Somehow the one whogets in the last word feels that he or she is the winner. The winner, however, is the onewho avoids an argument in the first place. Consider this text:“Behold, how good andhow pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Ps.133:1).A number of NewTestament passages instruct us on the importance of getting along with people, bothwith our neighbors and with our church brethren. “Let us therefore follow after thethings which make for peace and things wherewith one may edify another” (Rom.14:19).QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION1. At what levels does God want us to make peace? Job 22:21, Romans 12:18, Matthew 5:23-24,2 Cor.18-19,Jeremiah 29:7.2. How do we maintain peace in our family?
