I can do are tasks to apply the concepts in a different situation or extend his/her learning or learn more from experience. The tasks also calls for self expression, imagination and language skills. Guessing Jar provides questions to develop reasoning, logic and critical thinking. Clue Finder calls for higher cognitive skills like application analysis, synthesis and evaluation. In mathematics, the guided problems are for working out with teacher's guidance while Independent practice problems are for students to work out all by themselves. Question Box usually contains problems based on all the concepts learned in the chapter. It is more of a test or assignment. Problems given in the boxes test higher order thinking skills - both critical and lateral thinking. They are mostly challenging questions or fun activities. Aims and objectives The aim of Primary Education is to develop in the child everything that is required for a fruitful living. Primary Education sows the seed of character building which grows in to a full fledged tree in later years. The attitude and values a child develops in his formative years remains with him till the end. Primary education therefore has the following broader objectives : To let the child live his childhood fully so that he realizes his own interest and potential. 7 The Enchanted Frog It was a beautiful summer morning. There was a nice breeze blowing and flowers on trees were in full bloom. The daughter of King James was out to enjoy this beautiful morning. She was playing ball with her friends near a spring by the mountains. They had been playing by the spring for close to an hour. The princess decided that it was time to head back to the palace.

8 \"Hey girls, I think we should go now. Throw me the ball please”, the princess said to her playmates. One of the princess’ friends threw the ball to her. Unfortunately, the ball landed in the spring water. None of the girls knew how to swim, and thus, they could not go and fetch the ball. Suddenly, a frog appeared by the spring. The princess got down to her knees and begged the frog, “Oh Mr. frog!, if you could bring us our ball, I would take you to my lavish palace where you can live in comfort”. The frog, on hearing the princess’ plea, dived in the spring and fetched the ball for her. “Come on girls, let’s go”, said the princess, with the ball in her hands. She had forgotten the promise she had made to the frog. “Princess, you have to take me along. You promised me”, said the frog. The girls were astonished to see a talking frog. They were afraid to stay there any longer. Thus, hurriedly, they made their way back to the palace. At dinner, the princess was seated at the dinner table with her father, enjoying delicious meals, when she heard a knock at the door. She got up to see who it was and she was taken aback by what she saw.

9 “O beautiful princess, please keep your promise and give me shelter in your beautiful palace”. It was the frog that she had met at the spring. Too afraid to think straight, she quickly shut the door and came back to the dining table. However, the king could feel her uneasiness. “What happened, my girl? What’s the matter? You look disturbed”, the king asked her. “Father, I met a frog by the spring today. I promised him to give shelter in my palace in return for his help. However, I didn’t expect that the frog could talk or even come to the palace by himself. He is at the door”, the princess said, very afraid. “Princess, you made a promise to him. Now, you must keep it up”, said the king. Thus, following her father’s advice, the princess brought the frog inside and seated him at the dinner table. “Thank you beautiful princess. Now, please bring your dining plate close to my mouth so that I can eat from it”, the frog said.

10 The princess followed the frog’s request and brought her plate near his mouth with trembling hands. After the frog had eaten a stomach full, he said to the princess, “Now, please pick me up beautiful lady and take me to your bed. I shall sleep the night”. The princess had little choice but to follow the frog’s request. Thus, the frog slept peacefully on princess’ bed, while she lay by his side, afraid to close her eyes. This continued for 3 nights, and it drove the princess to madness. On the third night, the princess thought that she would ask her father to forgive her and throw the frog outside. However, on the fourth morning, she was in for a surprise. When she looked by her side, there was no frog. Instead, there was a handsome, tall prince standing by the side of her bed, looking at her with piercing eyes. “Who are you? And how did you get here?” the princess asked him. “I am the frog that you gave a shelter to. I was enchanted by a soothsayer after I had made fun of him. He had changed me into a frog and told me that if I slept on a princess’ bed and ate from her plate for 3 days, I would become a prince again. Thank you princess for helping me”, said the handsome prince. “What’s your name?” the princess asked. “I am Oliver. Would you marry me?” “Yes”, said the princess. Thus, after taking permission from King James, Oliver and the princess set afoot to get married and lead a happy life ever after.

• Make groups. Pick a character each from the story, including the frog. • Enact the story in the class with proper expressions and actions. • The student playing the frog should try to take the correct posture too. • It will be fun. What lesson do you learn from the story? Discuss in the class and reach a conclusion. 12 Practise writing the words given in ‘Language fact’ in four lines.

What are the colourful things the child sees on the earth? 3. According to mother, who makes everything in the world? The child asks many questions to its mother. Do you know the answers to any of those questions? Try if you can find the answers 1. Why is the sun very bright? 2. What are the colours of the rainbow? 3. Why is nature very green? 4. Why do we see the moon only at night? 5. Why does the mother say that god is a great architect? 6. What does an architect do? 15

Just like the child in the poem, you too will have some questions to ask. Write down at least five questions. 16

A Boastful Lion 17 There once lived a lion in Jungle Zangura in Kenya. He was the king of the jungle. He was ferocious and a very good hunter. However, he was arrogant and conceited too. He would often boast of his ferocious hunting skills, his fearsome roar and his huge size. He would especially

target a poor sheep and challenge her often to beat him at the game of hunting. However, the sheep ignored his challenges every time. “You are a coward. You don’t know how to fight. I am the best. I am the best in the jungle”, he often quipped to the sheep and other animals of the jungle. One day, the lion was roaming in the jungle when he encountered a bunch of rats. He gave his loudest scream and ran for his life. He tried hiding behind a tree, behind some bushes, and even in his den. However, everywhere he went, the rats followed him. The whole jungle could hear his screams, but no one came forward to help him. All the animals of the jungle were too fed up with his taunts and jibes. After his screaming did not stop for a good 5 minutes, the sheep decided to help him out. She headed in the direction of the screams. When she reached the scene, what she saw amused her. The ferocious lion was cowering in fear, and there were rats all around him. “Oh, dear sheep, please help me out! They will eat me”, cried the lion. “They are so tiny, and you are so big. How can they eat you?” said the sheep, amused at the lion’s fear. “Rats are the only thing I fear. Please help me out, please! I will be indebted to you for life”, cried the lion again. With a strong kick, the sheep shooed away the rats from the spot. The rats scurried away in different directions. Finally, the lion breathed easy. “Thank you so much dear sheep. You saved my life. But still, there is no better hunter than me”, said the lion, unashamed of boasting again. 18

“Mr. Lion, we all have our strengths and weaknesses. You may be a good hunter, but you are scared of rats. Similarly, I may not be a good hunter, but I am good at a lot of other things, like scaring away rats. It is best not to boast of your skills. One who does not boast is the strongest of them all”, the sheep said to the lion, finally breaking her silence. 19 “I am sorry dear sheep. I will boast no more. Can we be friends?” said the lion, sorry for his behavior. “Yes, of course”, said the sheep. Thus, the lion and the sheep became friends for life.

• The story is set in a jungle. • Several stories can be written with animals as characters and a jungle as the background. • Can you think of a short story set in a jungle? • Try it. You need not make correct sentences. • Just think of an idea. • Make groups. • One of you plays the lion; one plays the sheep, while the others play some other animals and rats. • Enact the story in the class. 21

Browse the web and try to find out other people’s accounts of visits to a fair. This will give you an idea of how fairs are. Write about 10 sentences on your visit to a fictitious fair. 2. However, many times, we use interrogative sentences while writing and speaking. • Find out how you use each of the three tenses for sentences in question form. • You could take the help of your teacher, or browse the web. • Write 5 interrogative sentences each for the three tenses in your notebook. • Irregular verbs do not have any rules for simple past tense. Different irregular verbs take different forms. • Browse the web and make a list of 5 irregular verbs each starting from ‘a’ to ‘z’. Some alphabets might not have any irregular verbs starting with them. Leave those out. • Write the rest in your notebook. • Write the meanings of the verbs that you are reading for the first time. 31

It is a simple sentence which gives the facts. Almost every other sentence that you speak or write is a statement. Things that you say in excitement are exclamations. They have an exclamation mark at the end. Example: When you come first in the class, when you forget something, when you see a friend after a long time etc. Example: I do not believe you. I came first in my class. 42
