Among them was the Abyssinian slave, fh Bilal, who was tortured by his cruel fh master. He was whipped, beaten and starved. He was also made to lie naked on the hot, burning desert fh sands all day long. So one day, Prophet Muhammad [s] decided to fhgo to the town of Ta'if, which was fhsome distance from Makkah, to preach his message. fh fhHe stood at the market place of the town and invited people to Islam. “O fhpeople, worship Allah alone and do not commit any evil !” the Prophet fh[s] called. There were fh no feelings of bitterness or anger in fh his heart; only a feeling of helpless- ness. “O Allah!” he prayed. “You are fh the most Merciful, so forgive me for fh my weakness. And from there it shot fhstraight up, like a shooting star, up into the dark blue skies, beyond fheven where the farthest stars twin- kle. fh fhThe Prophet [s] was taken through fhHeaven's gates, where he saw countless angels. He was then fhtaken through the Seven Heavens, fhone by one, seeing its wonders, wonders that you and I cannot fhimagine. vn366 my faith ...ISLAM
ry fh Then, the Prophet [s] passed fh through many curtain like veils, veils of heavenly fire and light, veils of fh heavenly ice and crystal waters fh and veils of darkness. Veils of heav- enly pearls and jewels, veils of sil- fh very golden mist, one veil even fh more fascinating than the next. Until at last Prophet Muhammad [s] fh came into the most beautiful light, fh the Light of Allah himself. The fh Prophet [s] felt peace and happi- ness, peace and happiness like he fh had never felt before. Here there fh was no darkness or sorrow, no loneliness or pain. Here there was fh nothing, no space nor time. Here fh there was only One, One alone, Allah, the Mighty, the Great. fh fh Here he witnessed the power of Allah and His Beauty. Down through the clouds, over the city of Jerusalem fhand over the wavy desert sands. Over the palmy oasis, their tiny vil- fhlages and their winding caravans. fhBack to the city of Makkah, with its blessed Ka'bah. fh fhProphet Muhammad [s] was amazed to find his bed still warm, fhand the cup he had tipped over still fhemptying. The heavenly journey, the Mi'raj, had all taken place in a fhmoment or less! Praise be to Allah fhwho is all-Powerful! How could he fh know all this when he had never fh been to Jerusalem before? How fh could he describe caravans that were hundreds of miles away? While they were keeping a close eye on the man in the bed, without them realising, Prophet ffhh Muhammad [s] escaped. fh The young Qurayshi men waited in silence throughout the night until, at fh dawn, the door swung open. The fh attackers sprang forward, tearing off the sheets of the bed. But what was this! Abu Jahl called out, “I will give a reward of one hundred fhcamels to anyone who captures fhMuhammad and brings him back, dead or alive.” fh fhPeople stretched out in search of the Prophet [s], going in every fhdirection, searching in every house and in every village, behind every ffhhtree and even under every stone. All the while Prophet Muhammad fh[s] and his close friend, Abu Bakr [r], fhwere racing off on two swift camels. But, instead of setting out straight fhfor Madinah, they went in the oppo- site direction. Now some of the Quraysh, expect- fh ing another ploy, set out across the fh desert in the direction Prophet fh Muhammad [s] took, and now, they were drawing ever nearer to the fh cave. fh They were so close now that Nabi Muhammad [s] and Abu Bakr [r] fh could hear them. They stayed very fh still and quiet. Prophet Muhammad fh [s] was not afraid at all, for he knew that Allah was with them. fh fh “Look! A cave. They're probably in there,” said a voice, just outside the cave entrance. “This looks like the fh sort of place where they might fh hide,” said another. fh “Don't be silly. rythere for a long time,” the voice out- fhside said again. “There's a spider's web right over the entrance. And fhlook, here's a dove, nesting on this ledge. She wouldn't still be sitting ffhhthere if there were people about.\" Abu Bakr [r] heard the Quraysh sol- fhdiers move away. When at last he fhwas sure they had gone, he turned to Nabi Muhammad [s] puzzled. fh“What has happened?” he asked. “There was no spider and no dove fhwhen we came in!” But the Prophet fhjust smiled and said, “Did I not tell you that Allah is with us?” fhOn another day, while on their jour- fhney to Yathrib, a Makkan soldier spied Prophet Muhammad [s] and fhAbu Bakr [r]. It was Suraqah, son of Malik. He charged on his swift fhhorse towards Nabi Muhammad [s]. fhBut no sooner did he approach the Prophet [s] but the hooves of his fhhorse sank into the groud, throwing vn386 my faith ...ISLAM

Again Suraqah mounted fh his horse and charged at full speed, fh and again the hooves of his horse were swallowed into the ground fh throwing him over even harder. fh But Suraqah was not to give up. fh The thought of earning the grand reward made him even more eager, fh and he mounted his steed once fh more. With all its strength he charged yet again. Abu Bakr [r] was terribly worried for the safety of fh Prophet Muhammad [s] and kept fh looking over his shoulder. Suraqah fh seemed to be catching up this time. fh Nabi Muhammad [s] turned calmly fh to his companion and said, “Did I not tell you, O Abu Bakr, that Allah is with us? Now stop worrying!” The fh Prophet [s] then continued reciting fh some verses of the Holy Qur’an. fh Suraqah was now ever so close to vn my faith ...ISLAM 387
ryProphet Muhammad [s]. If he fhstretched out his arm he could have grabbed at the Prophet’s [s] shoul- fhder. But, that was not to be. As sud- denly as before, the hooves of fhSuraqah’s horse were swallowed fhinto the ground and he was thrown over even more violently than fhbefore. He crashed to the ground fhand it felt as if every bone in his body was broken into a million fhpieces. fhSuraqah realised that something fhmuch greater than he could imagine was protecting Nabi Muhammad [s]. fh“Could it be?” He asked himself. fh ”Yes it must be!” fhBattered and bruised, he crawled up onto his feet and came to fhProphet Muhammad [s]. Suraqah fhfell to his knees, begging for mercy. “O Muhammad, please forgive me,” fhhe cried. vn388 my faith ...ISLAM
ry fh Nabi Muhammad [s] smiled at fh Suraqah, and how beautiful was the Prophet’s [s] smile. “You are forgiv- en, O Suraqah!” It was with his kind- fh ness and mercy that Prophet fh Muhammad [s] conquered the fh hearts of his enemies. fh “Please allow me to serve you, O fh Muhammad, in any way you may wish.” Nabi Muhammad [s] then asked Suraqah only not to tell the fh Quraysh where he was. He did not fh want anyone, not even his enemies, fh to be punished by Allah for trying to harm him. Nabi Muhammad [s] was fh the kindest and most forgiving man. fh No sooner did the Prophet [s] utter these words but Suraqah hurried fh back to Makkah. “Muhammad is fh nowhere to be found. There were fhgreat celebrations and everyone was happy, for the Prophet of Allah fhhad arrived. fhFrom that day onward Yathrib fhbecame known as, Madinat an- Nabi, which means ‘The City of the fhProphet', or simply Madinah. fhAs for the journey to Madinah, it is known as the Hijrah, or migration. fhThis event is most important, for Muslims all over the world.
