In view of the rapid socio-economic development and progress being made at micro and macro levels, the need of maintaining a basic information system and a statistical account of infrastructure cannot be over emphasized. As such the Book focuses on various aspects of socioeconomic development under various sectors in the district in a comprehensive manner. I am hopeful that this Book would be found useful for all the Public Representatives, Administrators, Planners, Bankers, NGOs, Development Agencies, Research scholars, Policy makers, Academicians in formulation and implementation of various developmental schemes in the district and also useful for the aspirants of various Comeptitive Exams. A. SALIENT FEATURES OF WANAPARTHY DISTRICT HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: Wanaparthy District has been carved in accordance with the Reorganization of the Districts Act, 2016 of the Telangana State. Wanaparthy Revenue Division Comprising 8 Mandals as part of the Mahabubnagar District was Already existing and Madanapuram, Revally, Chinnambavi , Amarachintha and Srirangapur mandals are newly formed mandals. Wanaparthy District is newly formed District bifurcated from the erstwhile Mahabubnagar District and occupies an area of 2164.59 Sq.km with total population of 577758 as per Census 2011 of which 92288 is urban population and 485470 rural population. The density of population is 267 per Sq.km. The percentage of rural population in the District is 84.03 and that of urban is 15.97. The scheduled caste population in the District forms 16.13% of the total population, while scheduled tribes account for 7.97% of the total population. Wanaparthy town is the largest urban unit in the District. BOUNDARIES AND TOPOGRAPHY: The District is bounded by Mahabubnagar District in the North, Nagarkurnool in the East, Jogulamba Gadwal District in the West, Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh in the south. The District is located in between 160 and 17’0 degrees Latitude and 770 degrees and 780 degrees Longitude. The District has one Revenue Division i.e., Wanaparthy and is sub-divided into 14 mandals, which includes 223 Revenue Villages, 255 Gram Panchayaths and (5) Municipalities. The official language of the district is Telugu and the second language is Urdu. Industries: Kothakota and Thippadampally are popular for silk sarees. Quartz, Feldspar, Limestone & Laterite occur in Pangal and Wanaparthy Mandals. One Large Industry SSV Spinners Private Limited with investment of Rs.42 Crores is established by providing employment for 180 persons in Peddamandadi village of Peddamandadi Mandal. Two (2) Mega projects viz., NSL Krishnaveni sugars Ltd. at Ramakrishnapur village of Kothakota Mandal and another Shasta Bio Fuels Pvt.Ltd., at Rangapur of Pebbair Mandal were established with investment of Rs.608 crores and these two projects are providing employment to 433 persons. Micro and small Enterprises: Under MSME Act 2006, a total of 293 Micro Enterprises with an investment of Rs.95.45 Crores providing employment to 1113 persons and 19 small enterprises with an investment of Rs.112.26 Crores providing employment to 1223 persons have been established from October 2006 to May,2015.
IRRIGATION Priyadarshini Jurala Project Priyadarshini Jurala Project was constructed across river Krishna between Nandimalla village (Amarachintha mandal of Wanaparthy District) and Revulapally village (Dharoor Mandal of Jogulamba Gadwal District) to utilize 17.84 TMC of water to irrigate an ayacut of 1,04,124 acres under Left Main Canal and Right Main Canals lying in the drought prone mandals of Amarachintha, Atmakur, Kothakota, Madanapur, Pebbair, Srirangapur, Weepanagandla, Chinnambaavi & Pentlavelly on Left Flank (68,467 acres) and Dharoor, Gadwal, Itikyal and Manopad on Right Flank (35,657 Acres). This project is also intended for generation of Hydro Electric Power of 234 MW and this component was executed by TS GENCO. The revised estimated project cost is Rs. 1,815.20 Crores (SSR 2012-13). The Ookachettuvagu Project, Ramanpad (v), a balancing reservoir on PJP Left Main Canal at km 17.100 has separate allocation of 1.900 TMC with an ayacut of 5,172 acres. Out of 73,639 acres (68,467+5,172) under PJP LMC, the ayacut in Wanaparthy district is 69,975 acres and the balance tail-end ayacut of 3,664 acres falls in Nagarkurnool district. Irrigation potential is created for entire ayacut. Rajiv Bheema Lift Irrigation (RBLI), Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift irrigation (MGKLI) schemes are ongoing Lift irrigation schemes having an Ayacut of 74397 and 64739 acres respectively. The rainy season starts in June and ends in September. The rainfall in the district increases from the south-west towards the north east. About 80% of the rainfall is received during the rainy season. July & August Months are full rainy months. 1349.4 MM rainfall is recorded against the normal rainfall of 579.6 MM for the Year 2020-21 in the district. Places and Tourist Importance: Wanaparthy District having tourist potential with tourist spots like 1. Sri Ranganayaka Swamy temple is located in Srirangapur Village of Srirangapur Mandal at a distance of 23 Kms from District headquarters and was built in the 18th century. According to legend, Krishnadevaraya, the Vijayanagar ruler, went to Srirangam and was enthralled by the Sri Ranganayakaswamy Temple there. He desired to construct a Ranganayakaswamy temple in his kingdom. Later, Ranganayaka (Lord Vishnu) appeared in dream and told the king that his idol was lying in the kingdom and an eagle will direct him to that place. The succeeding day, Krishnadevaraya followed the eagle and found the Lord’s idol between Kothakota and Kanvayapally mountains. The king constructed the Sri Ranganayakaswamy Temple near Ratna Pushkarini Lake and is a classic example of Vijayanagar architecture. 2. Wanaparthy turned into ruled with the aid of a feudal ruler, Rameshwar Rao II, who was a vassal of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Wanaparthy became one of the 14 important Zamindari segments in Telangana in Post-Independent India. Raja died on 22 November 1922. As his successor, Krishna Dev was a minor, his property was controlled by the Court as his ward Krishna Dev died earlier than attaining maturity and the crown surpassed directly to his son Rameshwar Rao III. Soon after India abolished all regal titles Wanaparthy Samsthanam or Raja of Wanaparthy changed into a vassal of Nizam
of Hyderabad. He controlled the feudatory of Wanaparthy. Wanaparthy Rajagari Bungalow was donated to the polytechnic college which is the first ever Polytechnic College in Telangana which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble First Prime Minister of India Pandit Sri Jawahar Lal Nehru on the auspicious day of Vijayadasami ie., on 11th October, 1959 and the most important place to visit. After formation of the Telangana State Wanaparthy District is a newly formed district which was also inaugurated on the same auspicious day of Vijayadasami ie., on 11th October, 2016. 3. Saralasagar project is first ever of its kind and the second biggest dam in Asia running with siphon system and the capacity of the dam is 0.5tmcft, located in Madanapur mandal at a distance of 20 KMs to district head quarters. It is the oldest project in India after independence. Raja of Wanaparthy Raja Rameshwara Rao founded the Sarala Sagar Dam Project that has incorporated siphon technology from California, United States. The project was inaugurated in 1949 by the former Governor of Hyderabad General J.N Chowdary. Presently this project is irrigating an area of 4,241 Acres of agricultural land in the Wanaparthy district. Telangana Government has taken priority for desilting and repair of the guide walls of the project in Mission Kakatiya Phase-III with an Estt. Cost of Rs.2.30 Crores. 4. Ghanpur Khilla Khilla Ghanpur also known as Ghanpur, Ganapuram, was named after Kakatiya king Ganapathi Deva. Ghanpur has a hill fort with hilly area of 4 Sq.Km.and was built by joining two mountains by Gona Ganapa Reddy and Recherla Padma Nayakulu (Singama Nayakudu I) in 13th century. This fort had witnessed many wars between Bahamanis, Vijayanagara Kings, Bijapur Kings and Qutub Shahi Kings, etc. The cannons which still exist have been kept on the top most side of the fort. We can also see palace and ruins of the ministers houses. The village was Naginenipally before it was named after Kakatiya Ruler Ganapathideva by Gona Ganna Reddy. People believe that there are two secret tunnels inside the fort. One is connected with the village at the bottom of the mountain and the other one is connected to the Pangal fort. After Buddapuram war, Kakatiya's last king Pratapa Rudra married to Gona Ganna Reddy's daughter in this Fort. The fort has beautiful rockscapes and greenery with two ponds which were used as drinking water supply for the fort army. There are many adventure activities that can be done here including rappelling, rock climbing, caving, etc. There are several temples inside the fort like Veerabhadra Temple, Narasimha Temple and Chowdeswari Temple. There are several caves on the hilltop and provide good opportunity for exploration. There are two ponds inside the fort with fresh water and they are good for swimming. There are several hills around the fort and they provide good opportunity for trekking as well. Ghanpur Lake is a large lake situated close to the Ghanpur village and the view of the lake from the fort is picturesque.
5.Pangal Khilla: At a distance of 1.5 km from Pangal Bus Station, 15 km from Wanaparthy Bus Station, 74 km from erstwhile Mahabubnagar district and 163 km from Hyderabad, Pangal Fort is located at Pangal in Wanaparthy District and is one of the Famous Hill Forts in Telangana. The trekking starts from Pangal village and it is an easy trek which takes about 2 hours to reach the peak, explore and come back to the village. It was built by Kalyani Chalukya Kings during 11th and 12th Centuries. The fort is spread across hundreds of acres with Seven Gateways. The Main entrance is called as “Mundlagavini” and is a special attraction of this fort. It was built with huge granite rocks. The ruins of the fort houses several monuments built with beautiful architecture, including Uyyala Mandapam and several water bodies. Many deadly wars had taken place among the dynasties like Bahamani, Vijayanagara, Padmanayaka and Qutub Shahis at this fort. The fort also witnessed guerrilla warfare during the revolt against the Nizam. 6.Chaandraghad Fort: At a distance of 1.3 km from Chandraghad, 8 km from Jurala Dam, 43Km from Wanaparthy Bus Station, 74 km from Mahabubnagar Bus Station and 163 km from Hyderabad, Chandraghad Fort is located at Chandraghad Village in Amarchintha mandal of Wanaparthy District. This Hill Fort is located close to Jurala Dam. The picturesique Hill fort is located on the banks of river Krishna. This Fort was built during Peshwas and belongs to Chandrasena Jilledar. This is a strong fort constructed to store the grains and taxes collected from people. The fort offers the remains of the protective walls, gateways and several ruined buildings. The Sri Ramalingeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in the fort. There are several water bodies exist in the fort. It requires about one km walk from the nearest road point to trek to the hilltop. Chandraghad is about 2 km from the main road between Jurala and Atmakur. Public transport to Chandraghad is very poor.

1.Population Population As per 2011 census, Wanaparthy District has the population of 5,77,758 with a decennial growth rate of 15.77 % as against 11.10 % of state population. Out of the total population, the male and female population is 2,94,833 and 2,82,925. Wanaparthy town is the largest urban unit with population of 60,949. The Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) population of the district is 93,182 (16.13 %) and 46,062 (7.97 %) respectively. Density of Population According to 2011 Census the district’s density of population is 267 persons per Sq.km which is less than the state density of 312 persons per Sq. km. In the urban areas the density of population is high (>300) and in the remaining areas the density is moderate (200-300) and low (100-200). Growth of Population The decadal growth rate is an important part of census operations. The decadal growth rate provides an overview of the percentage of total population growth in a particular decade. During the decade the overall growth of total population during 2001 and 2011 is 15.77 % and in urban area it is 21.62 %. Sex Ratio Population enumeration by gender composition is one of the basic demographic characteristics and provides meaningful demographic analysis. Changes in sex ratio composition largely reflect the underlying social, economic and cultural patterns of the society in different ways. Sex ratio is defined as the number of females per 1000 males in the population. According to experts sex differential in mortality, sex selective out-migration, skewed sex ratio at birth are the major contributory factors that influence changes in sex ratio. As per 2011 census, the ratio of females per 1000 males in the district is 960. Out of 14 mandals in the district, the females are outnumbered males in Amarchinta mandal (1009) and least sex ratio (922) is in pangal mandal. 1
Literacy Literacy refers to the total percentage of population of people of the age of seven years and above who can read and write with understanding. Literacy and level of education are the basic indicators of the society. Literacy plays a major role in the economic development. According to the Census 2011, 2,81,331 persons in the district are literates. Of these 1,68,792 are males and 1,12,539 are females. While the overall literacy rate works out to be 55.67 %, the male literacy rate is 65.73 % and that for females is 45.27 %, showing a gap of 20.46 % between the sexes at the district level. Decadal variation in literacy rate, as per 2001 census it is 43.92 % whereas in 2011 census it is 55.67 % which is 11.75 % more than preceding census. Workforce Total workforce of the district is 2.95 lakhs as per 2011 census.In which total number of Cultivators in the District are 60,914, Agricultural labourers are 1.44 lakhs, Household Industry Workers are 8,749, Other Workers are 81,773 and total non- workers in the district are 2.82 lakhs. 2

2.Climate Climate Wanaparthy has a predominantly hot and dry climate. Summer starts in March, and peak in May with high temperatures 44 °C range. The Southwest monsoon arrives in June and lasts in September. A dry, mild winter starts in late November and lasts until early February with little humidity and average temperatures in the 18–23 °C range. For the year 2021, the mean maximum temperature (0C) recorded in the month of April is 37.8 and minimum temperature (0C) recorded in the month of February is 17.7. Rainfall The monsoon plays vital role in the Agricultural Economy of the district is southwest monsoon. The Average annual rainfall of the district for the year 2020-21 is 1349.4 mm. The mean seasonal rainfall distribution for the year 2020-21 is 1085.9 mm in southwest monsoon (June-September), 183.9 mm in northeast monsoon (Oct – Dec),1.6 mm in winter period (Jan-Feb) and 78.0 mm in Hot weather period (Mar- May). The Normal Average Rainfall of the district for the 2020-21 is 579.6 mm Ground Water The District Average depth to ground water level for the year 2021 is 3.28 m. A rise of 11.62 m in the average ground water level is observed from the year 2014 to 2021. 3.Agriculture Introduction Agriculture is the backbone of the Wanaparthy and plays a pivotal role in the economy of the District and boosting the performance of this sector is vital for inclusive growth. Sustainable growth in Agriculture continues to be the core agenda of the Government and occupies centre stage in state economy embodying three thrust areas viz., (i) to promote inclusive growth, (ii) to enhance rural incomes, and (iii) to sustain food security. The Government of Telangana has undertaken several initiatives to boost the sector’s growth, increase farmers income and improve farmers welfare. To achieve these objectives, the Government has implemented policy initiatives such as the flagship Kaleswaram Project and Mission Kakatiya to improve the irrigation infrastructure, the supply of 24X7 free power to farmers, investment support to farmers under Rythu Bandhu scheme, access to inputs, markets & credit, and provisioning of life insurance to make farmers under the Rythu Bima scheme. Rythu Vedikas Rythu Vedikas are the first of its kind in India where a platform is being created for the farmers to motivate and stabilize the farmers in attaining the higher returns and making the farmers “Rythe Raju”. Rythu Vedikas will help in mobilising the farmers to organise themselves into groups for attaining their ultimate objective of getting the remunerative prices, better marketing facilities, higher productivity and ultimately making the agriculture profitable. The Government has sanctioned 71 Rythu Vedikas and completed with the estimated cost of Rs 15.62 Crs in the district. Land Utilization As per the pattern of land utilization in Wanaparthy district, 57% of the total geographical area falls under Net Area Sown (inclu. Fish/Prawn culture). Census of Land Holdings 2015-16 According to the Census of Land Holdings (2015-16), there are 3.83 lakh land holdings in Wanaparthy district covering a total area of 9.55 lakh acres. a. Marginal farmers (<2.47 acres) hold 63.2% of the total land holdings, accounting 30
for 26.5% of the area operated. b. Small farmers (2.48 – 4.94 acres) hold 24.8% of the total land holdings, accounting for 34.9% of the area operated. c. Semi-medium farmers (4.95-9.88 acres) hold 9.9% of the total land holdings, accounting for 25.5% of the area operated. d. Medium farmers (9.89-24.7 acres) hold 1.9% of the total land holdings, accounting for 10.8% of the area operated. e. Large farmers (>24.7 acres) hold 0.2% of the land holdings, accounting for 2.3% of the area operated. Horticulture Horticulture College is established at Mojerla village of Peddamandadi mandal in the year 2014. 308 students were enrolled in the college during 2020-21.
