freeing the curtain wall from mullions, allowing a totally traABnodljtsussptabalerent surface meeting the program of a museum of glass. Glass is tilted, forming a tension between the interior and exterior. Free Body Analysis The cable structure is only for resisting the lateral loadings. The weight of the glass basically sit on it- self. The cable is in tension, forcing the posts in the middle into compression, providing strong lateral resistance in one direction. The sails are connected to the columns and each other in another direction, providing lateral resistance in the other direction. Public Mixing The West Harlem neighborhood andColumbia University have often shared a tenserelationship in the past. The social goals ofthe wealthy ivy league institution and poorerlower-class neighborhood have not alwaysaligned. In recent years, Columbia has beenlooking to expand their campus into theManhattanville block of West Harlem, whichhas pushed local businesses out of the areaas they could not afford to fight the expansion. The project approaches these issue through ahypothetical aquatic center for the University,to be used for both public and private events.By incorporating a rooftop plaza and pushing ittowards sidewalk level with careful systems oframping and terracing, a complex, yet intuitivecirculation system is set up that providesinteraction between the interior pool area andthe sidewalk cafe which tempts outsiders intothe space. 263

Wait Accommodation Bathroom accommodations are mostcommonly thought of as interior amenities, but in a small scale, single user restroom, there will inevitably be a wait times outsideof the restroom as the restroom can neveraccommodate the random fluctuations ofbathroom users when desired usage overlaps. Therefore a single user restroom must provideexterior amenities to provide a comfortableexperience to each user. Additionally for theWest Harlem Piers Park site, a popular bikepath is directly adjacent to the restroom, requiring bicycle accommodations to provide acomfortable experience. To solve the problemaddressed above, a restroom module wascreated with a variable language that allows foradaptive bench, bicycle rack, and privacy wallsbased on the site location. For this proposal, one iteration of the restroom was created toexhibit the individual properties so they couldbe refined before adaptations to other sites areexplored in the future.282
