The images in this monograph do notreflect a reality. They are ideas, but they proposepossible realities. Possible realities that aresomewhat strange in nature. The spaces observedare contradictory and simultaneously reveal andconceal their intentions. The spaces are introvertedand strangely lit. The spaces are almost conventionalyet wildly unconventional. Little value is placed onform, and much value is placed on experience. The spaces are meant to pique curiosity.Generating curiosity is the only intention of thespaces, and what conclusions one may draw areintentionally open ended. Architecture is a passivemedium that does not impose narrative. Insteadthe users impose a narrative on the architecture.If curiosity can be generated, experiencing truewonder is possible. The explorations in this monograph areexplorations in methods of generating curiosity andopen ended narrative. The strategies are vaguelyspecific and intensely nuanced. Each seeks to createa condition that is both strange yet familiar. Almostcomfortable, and almost unexpected. 3

Boxed Sentiments We acquire more than we can use.Trinkets pile up. We find more creativehomes for our gifts. The necessary becomesoutdated. The sentimental value we assignto objects prevents us from disposing of theotherwise useless. The sentiments instead areboxed and stored away from the light of thehome. In theory they can be accessed easily,but once out of sight their exact locations areforgotten. When there isn’t any more space theywill have to be moved elsewhere. We can geta storage unit. One that hides our objects fromthe light. Somewhere that is in theory easilyaccessible, but can be lost among the boxes. “Boxed Sentiments” is a storagewarehouse without walls or physical partitions.The delineation between storage andcirculation is defined by the space occupiedby the light in the interior. Cast shadowsprovide the visual barrier while lighting in thewalls provide a visual reference for the locationof the circulation. Within the shadowed spacesboxes are placed with items. The boxes areeasily accessible, but finding the correctbox may become a chore. It may be thatonce the boxes enter the space, they arenever accessed again, but knowing that thesentimental objects are not gone is all that isnecessary. 23
