ARTICLES CONTRIBUTIONS BY FACULTY MEMBERS Research, Consultancy, Publications and Patents Day Today, the 4th of April 2022 and the first Monday of April, we, at REC, are celebrating our first “Research, Consultancy, Publication and Patents Day’. Our faculty at REC have made some significant progress in all these activities. Taking note of these achievements, the Management of REC has come up with the idea with support for “Research, Consultancy, Publications and Patent” Day to be organised as an annual function to appreciate and recognize faculty who have noteworthy accomplishments in Research, Consultancy, Publications and Patents. At the outset, I wish to thank Prof. M. Subbiah, Prof. S. N. Murugesan and Prof. G. Thanigaiyarasu for the many discussions which helped me to crystallize my thoughts for this occasion. We, as teachers deeply appreciate that learning and research are lifelong pursuits and an integral part of our work. Technical publications of results from our research investigations, in high- quality, well reputed journals enhance the reputation of our institution and bring us peer recognition. The satisfaction of adding new developments to our subject and understanding produces a positive multiplier effect. Interacting with industries and offering good solutions to their problems through Consultancy services, in addition to financial rewards, provides an opportunity to connect many of our theoretical knowledge and understanding with the current industrial products and processes; this, in turn, spurs innovative thinking to help us pursue new problems and to factor these in our teaching and research. Deep research, experimental investigations and project work in cutting-edge frontier areas of interest lead ideas to new processes or products. To take these solutions forward for wider use and reach, securing Patents as Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) goes a long way. Applying for and obtaining a patent is time-consuming; however, it is worth pursuing with perseverance, as the legal rights will be with the institution. We can proceed with further in implementing the process or making the product, by setting a start-up in our campus or in collaboration with an industry. The outcomes of these activities, namely, Research, Consultancy, Publications and Patents should percolate to students, motivate them to take up innovative projects, enable them to acquire depth by practice and be well- equipped as graduates to stay ahead in this competitive world. We also see that our students enjoy being part of these activities and are eager to engage in research. . Recently, over the last few years, several, Ranking and Accreditation systems are available and many, if not all, Engineering Educational & Research institutions including REC are participants. We view it as an opportunity for an unbiased perspective form peer-outside and benchmarking; this provides a thrust to reflect and adapt raise our expectations of ourselves. ~1~ Rajalakshmi Engineering College – Revista 2021-22

Research is a lifelong endeavor; the present-day students have much higher level of awareness of recent technological developments and are eager to take challenging projects and innovative tasks, apart from regular prescribed curricular activities. Year after year, when we celebrate this day in the first Monday of April, our research and consultancy activities, publications and patents should grow in number as well as in quality. Creating new knowledge has become an integral part of all higher education engineering institutions and has become integral to both faculty and student experience. In the current scenario of Industry 4.0/4.5 and 5.0 of accelerating developments, an Engineer- professional should be both a jack of all arts as well as master of many to survive in this competitive world. This is not merely desirable; it is essential for a successful and satisfying professional career.” With clear thinking and sustained effort, you, our proud faculty of REC can make this happen. Dr. C.R. Muthukrishnan Advisor, Rajalakshmi Institutions & Dr. M. Subbiah Professor (Emeritus) Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Wind and Solar Energy Electric Conversion systems – an Overview In the last three decades, the demand for electrical energy is constantly increasing, due to the expanding industrialization and rapid urbanization, with the associated air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines installed in large numbers. On the other hand, conventional energy sources, such as coal and oil are fast depleting and they also cause extensive atmospheric pollution. The large hydro plants also are not dependable throughout the year. These factors have initiated the attempts to go in for the development of renewable sources; particularly the solar and wind energy systems. The micro–hydro plants are also included in this category. In early 1980s, solar panels, with ratings of merely hundreds of watts were installed, but now it has increased steadily to MW rating installations. Presently 193 panels each of 24V and 320 W is with a total rating of 61.75 kW have been installed in the terrace of the main building of our college and the output at 560V dc is converted to 400V , 3-phase ac, using IGBT inverters and fed to the grid. A 5 kW solar unit has been installed in the terrace of the main block, consisting of 16 panels of 24 V and 320 W and its output at 24 V is brought to the EEE department, Electrical Machines laboratory for further research work on power electronic control systems using advanced technology, very much needed for the establishing reliable battery charging applications for Electric vehicles. Two centers of Excellence one in Renewable Energy Systems and the other on Electric Vehicles are also been created for further extensive research and consultancy activities. ~2~ Rajalakshmi Engineering College – Revista 2021-22

In beginning, the power ratings of individual wind driven induction generators were in the order of hundreds of kW only, with a voltage rating of 400V. These induction generators were connected to 22 or 33 kV grid (GCIGs) through step up transformers. Now, generators in the 9- 15 MW rating have been developed and run with the corresponding tall wind turbines of 120 m, fitted with large diameter blades. Broadly there are two modes of operation of wind driven generators. They are also self-excited induction generators (SEIGs) with smaller ratings to feed power to isolated loads. In this context, it is to be mentioned that in recent times, a concern has been raised by environmentalists that large grid-connected wind energy establishments using GCIGs of MW ratings affect the local ecosystem such as bird hit and destruction of vast green land. There are many research papers in this field of ornithology. The potential effects of large-capacity wind farms have been explored on the migration of birds and their collision with turbine blades. Direct mortality or injury of birds can result not only from collisions with rotors, but also with towers, nacelles and other associated structures. So, smaller isolated systems with SEIGs of kW ratings may find increased acceptance and applications, particularly in rural areas for farm irrigation, lighting, battery charging and preservation of perishable agriculture produce and also for a variety of small-scale cottage industries, etc. Installing several such SEIGs and operating them in parallel would also enable the formation of micro- grids, controlled with smart grid concepts. Even though, in large wind farms, slip ring induction machines are preferred for GCIG operation, squirrel cage induction machines will continue to be used for SEIGs meant for stand-alone isolated power supplies, due to their lower cost, absence of slip rings, robust construction and almost nil maintenance requirements. It is known that the SEIGs with a fixed stator winding, operating with a given excitation capacitance and load, will fail to excite when the rotor speed comes below a certain minimum value, called the drop out speed (dos). For increasing the operating speed range, quite earlier, pole-changing windings were used for the stator, the lower and higher poles settings such as 4 and 6 poles being used, respectively, during higher and lower ranges of wind speed. Later, for achieving an extended operating speed range, stator winding designed for one pole only, but with a three-stage switching scheme, namely parallel star, delta and star connections (YY– – Y) was advocated. The first stage is set at higher range of wind speeds. As the wind speed reduces, the terminal voltage as well as frequency gets reduced. At one point, when the voltage comes down below a certain desired value, the second stage is switched in. Since the second stage has more turns in series per phase (Tph), the voltage level again rises and operation is continued. Similarly, with further lower speeds, the third stage, with still higher Tph, is switched in. So, while adopting such three-stage connections, the increase in turns in series per phase obtained with decreasing rotor speed is an indication of the width of the speed range obtainable for the operation of the SEIGs. In this context, one more requirement for gaining the maximum advantage of using three stages is that, fairly continuous operating speed should be obtained, i.e., drop out speed of the first stage should match with the starting speed of the ~3~ Rajalakshmi Engineering College – Revista 2021-22

second stage and similarly between the second and third stages. The stator of a 2.2 kW squirrel cage induction machine has been designed, installed and tested in our college laboratory and its successful working over a wide speed range has been demonstrated. An increased speed range of an SEIG would also be useful, when its variable voltage, variable frequency output is followed by some form of power electronic converter, to obtain a desired DC voltage for battery charging loads or for feeding other constant DC voltage applications. Recently, SEIGs are also being proposed for establishing DC and AC micro grids. Fig. shows the block diagram of several SEIGs operated in parallel and the variable ac output is rectified and converted to fixed DC voltage to supply DC loads. This DC voltage can also be converted to AC voltage of desired voltage and frequency. Several generators in parallel can thus be enable the formation DC or AC micro grids. Dr. P. Sivakumar, Associate Professor, EEE Dr. R. Essaki Raj, Associate Professor, EEE GO Language – An Overview Introduction Go is a general-purpose programming language developed by Google. Google Engineers created Go in order to construct stable and efficient software. Go is a statically typed and expressive programming language. The development of Go was motivated by the need to overcome software engineering issues at Google and provide an alternative to C++. As multi-core computers became increasingly popular, it became critical to create a language with higher productivity levels. ~4~ Rajalakshmi Engineering College – Revista 2021-22

History of GOLang In 2007, Google began working on the design of Go. The designers sought to create a programming language that was simple to learn while maintaining aspects of existing languages such as C++, Python, and JavaScript. The language took shape in 2008, progressing from prototype to public announcement in 2009. Go became an open source project the same year, letting members of the community to contribute ideas and code. Version 1.0 was released in 2012.New upgrades and features, such as generics and error handling in 2018, have been implemented over time. The popularity of Go has risen and fall over the years. Why Go?  Go is a popular programming language among developers because of its clarity and lack of ambiguity in its syntax.  The language was created by combining Python's productivity and relative simplicity with the capabilities of C.  Slow build times, uncontrolled dependencies, effort duplication, the difficulty of building automatic tools, and cross-language development are some of the issues that Go addresses.  Go makes use of \"goroutines,\" or lightweight processes, to increase efficiency. For effective dependency management, Go also employs a package system.  Google, Cloudflare, Dropbox, MongoDB, Netflix, SoundCloud, Twitch, and Uber are some of the companies that use Go. Purpose of the Golang Go has several features, including a standard library, package management, static typing, testing support, and platform independence. The use of distributed packages is the foundation of Go's standard library. Go's support for user-based and external package management is referred to as package management. A simple set of commands can be used to publish packages. Static typing is a type system that provides compatibility and conversions while avoiding the problems that arise with dynamically typed languages. Unit tests can be run in parallel with written code in Go. Furthermore, Go's modular design allows the code to be compiled on practically any platform. Go makes use of lightweight processes that act like threads and allow for concurrent processing. The syntax will be based on patterns found in dynamic languages. In Golang, composition interfaces are preferred over inheritance. Go's \"Gofmt\" feature, which automatically formats and indents code for readability, \"Go run,\" which compiles and runs code at the same time, \"Go get,\" which seamlessly integrates with GitHub, and \"Godoc,\" which generates HTML-based documentation based on the code structure and developer comments, are all worth mentioning. ~5~ Rajalakshmi Engineering College – Revista 2021-22

Benefits of Go Using Go over other programming languages has a number of advantages, such as:  Quick compilation and execution speed  No virtual machine (VM) needed  Portability  Lightweight goroutines that support concurrency  Interfaces enable loosely coupled systems  Automatic garbage collection  Memory safety  Independent error handling  Extensive built-in libraries Applications of the Go programming language Go is used by a wide range of software development teams and in a wide range of applications. Container services like Docker and Kubernetes, cloud services like Terraform and OpenShift, service orchestration tools like Juju, and other applications like Bitcoin networks, such as Lightning Network, all use Go. Couchbase, which utilises Go for Query and Indexing services; Dropbox, which switched from Python to Go; MongoDB, for tools linked to MongoDB instances; and Netflix, for certain of its server architectures, are among the companies that use the Go programming language. yes! 80/20 Rule in Our Life and Work The 80/20 rule has always piqued my interest. The 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle or the law of the vital few, states that 80 percent of the effects result from only 20% of the causes in many situations. The Pareto principle was named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who found it after noticing that roughly 80% of Italy's land was owned by 20% of the people, and he continued to notice the same pattern in other scenarios. The Principle is a universal fact about input-output imbalances. To leverage, one does not need to write mathematical formulas, perform hard algebra, or comprehend statistics. The primary goal is to look for the minor details that compound to massive results. The flexibility to assess one's goals and duties differently is the most intriguing aspect of the 80/20 rule. One can begin by focusing on what will produce the most outcomes and happiness. This will aid with concentration and, more significantly, the ability to tackle one activity at a time. This will make a huge difference since, as we all know, humans aren't nearly as excellent at multitasking as we assume. A small proportion of things in our lives have the greatest impact on us. Or, to put it another way, only a few significant things are important. For the simple reason that most things in life are not uniformly distributed, we may all benefit from Pareto's insight. We are productive as sensible humans who like to get things done to work our way through a to-do list in a systematic manner. The Pareto Principle, on the other hand, can provide an extra layer of intelligence, or filter, to the mix. This can change how we handle circumstances and how we organize our time so that we spend it on the activities that provide us with the greatest return. Many of us are overwhelmed by the fact that we have too much to accomplish and not enough time to complete it. We confidently approach our mountain of tasks and begin whittling away at it, bit by bit, naively blundering through the storm. So, what if we applied the Pareto Principle to the manner we went about it? Could it assist us in determining what constitutes a good use of our time and what does not? Could it also assist us in establishing some personal limits to help us feel less overwhelmed? Perhaps it would allow some of us to accept, without feeling guilty, that we can't get everything done to a standard that is 'good enough' in our thoughts. Perhaps it will enable us to recognize that this is, in fact, 'OK.' Maybe we might apprehend that during putting greater precise limitations for ourselves we will acquire what we need to, and get the outcomes that we desire, via way of means of focusing at the matters that matter – as opposed to seeking to do all things. We can use Pareto`s principle as a mechanism to scrutinize what we want to perform and to filter the `shoulds` and `coulds`. In other words, ensure one allocate maximum effort and time to the 20% matters which might be going to have the maximum widespread impact (the 80%) – both in work front and personal life. One has to take charge of life and start setting boundaries. This will lead to our Rediscovery. Hydrogen: Zero-Carbon Fuel The present world is experiencing sudden changes in climate as evidenced from recent flooding’s in Florida, USA, Germany, India and particularly heavy rains in Chennai during the past few months. We further see the geological changes by elevated melting of arctic glaciers and the uncovering of ever snow-covered Greenland. Further, the temperature of the Middle East countries will be raised to 52 oC during the summer months of next few years that are unfavourable for the human life. Researchers point out the climatic changes due to the excessive burning of fossils and deforestation measured as carbon emissions. So, in the present world the fuels with carbon neutrality/zero carbon emissions are preferred. Hydrogen is the simplest fuel known and when burnt in the presence of oxygen, it emits water which is potable and eco-friendly. When hydrogen is burnt, there won’t be any carbon emission and so it is classified as zero-carbon fuel. Its basic features include low volumetric density (0.08988 g/L at 1 atm) and extremely low boiling point of – 252.9 oC and classified as cryogenic liquid. If the temperatures exceed its boiling point, hydrogen expands rapidly and results in explosions. It even escapes through welded pores and not preferred to be stored in huge boiler-like vessels. It cannot be stored in metal vessels as well due to the low-temperature of hydrogen, the metal becomes brittle. For these reasons, liquid hydrogen should be stored special vessels at – 280 oC and handled with extreme care. Liquid hydrogen had long been used as the rocket fuel due to its extreme burning intensity with temperatures of ~ 3,000 oC. In combination with oxidizer such as liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen yields highest specific impulse of any known rocket propellent. For this, hydrogen is stored under cryogenic conditions and insulated from atmosphere. Whether we can use hydrogen as the fuel in the present age Internal Combustion (IC) engines, the answer is yes. If it is used as the fuel in IC engines, both gasoline and hydrogen can generate same power of 2.5 kW at 1800 RPM and the efficiency will be higher under higher engine speed. There are two methods for the use of hydrogen in IC engines, direct injection of hydrogen and closed cycle hydrogen engine, wherein, carrier gas is used for the injection of hydrogen. Presently in India, Delhi Metropolitan buses utilize a mixture of hydrogen (maximum of 30-35%) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to get high energy density with low emissions. There are two main hydrogen production sources, namely, the hydrogen from fossil fuels produced by hydrocarbon pyrolysis and hydrocarbon reforming and classified as Grey Hydrogen. The hydrogen from renewable energy sources produced by water splitting reaction and biomass is classified as Blue Hydrogen. The simplest of all is the water splitting reaction through alkaline water electrolysis to generate hydrogen and oxygen. It generates half the oxygen corresponding to one hydrogen that can either be utilized directly (hydrogen powered vehicle) or can be stored cryogenically and utilized. In order to produce hydrogen commercially, the whole operation process should be coupled with renewable energy source like solar power to bring cost-effectiveness and can be operated anywhere in the country, irrespective of terrain conditions. Hydrogen is stored in two different principles, physical and material storage systems. Under physical storage systems, compression, liquefaction and cryogenic hydrogen are used. In materials storage systems, hydrogen is stored in solid state based on the principles of ~9~ Rajalakshmi Engineering College – Revista 2021-22

physisorption and chemisorption and as Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) through covalent bonds. For the transportation of hydrogen, solid form adsorbed on the suitable adsorbents, compressed form uses hydrogen in compressed form kept at 350 to 700 bars of pressure and liquid hydrogen stored at – 280 oC, and are transported by road, through pipelines and via ocean. The research interests on hydrogen includes the materials/methods for storage, transportation and regeneration of hydrogen, LOHC and application to hydrogen powered vehicles. REC is overwhelmed by these developments and will be part of this with the interests on materials/methods, LOHC and the development of hydrogen powered vehicles in the near future. Indian government released National Hydrogen Policy on 18-02-2022 that stated the government plans to manufacture a cumulative five million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 aiming to meet the climate targets and become a production and export hub for the fuel. India will set up separate manufacturing zones, waive inter-state power transmission charges for 25 years and provide priority connectivity to electric grids to green hydrogen and ammonia producers in a bid to incentivise production, the federal power ministry said. Its good opportunity for renewable green hydrogen sectors coupling solar PV station and wind mills with hydrogen generation via electrolysis. CONTRIBUTIONS BY STUDENTS Electric Vehicles Electricity has become the classical matchup fuel in the automotive industry for transportation sustainability. The oil industries have started to lose their legacy as the petrol motors continue to create a cataclysmic problem, by destabilizing the planet. This has created a positive impact in the global human behaviour in moving towards alternate fuel power chain technology. Electric Vehicle is one such futuristic approach that finds its application far and wide. An electric vehicle uses an electric motor instead of the conventional Internal Combustion Engine that requires fossil fuels for its functioning. E-vehicles are designed to be driven by rechargeable batteries which are generally charged using super chargers that are specially designed to efficiently charge the batteries in a short duration. With the usage of such environmental-friendly batteries, the E-vehicles become cheaper and durable. These vehicles produce a relatively less Carbon emission and have a smooth and quiet response. The construction and maintenance of e-vehicles is also simple and easy. The E- vehicles include electric cars, bikes, buses and even bicycles. Depending on the application, the vehicle is designed with the desired horsepower. For instance, the fastest ‘Rimac Nevera’ electric car has a horsepower of 1914 which is four times higher than fuel-run cars. Such cars also produce high toque. These features add to the reasons for opting an E-vehicle. Like the Fuel stations, the charging stations for the electric vehicles are being setup in the cities for commercial use. Such stations can be connected to any available grid and can also be powered using Solar or other renewable source of energy. These charging stations thereby reduce the charging cost and enhance the power deliver capabilities. Though the electric vehicles have come into the commercial market and on roads, the initial cost, the recharging time, availability of charging stations are some of the unsorted issues. The production of electric cars is expensive and so is its price. Hence it is still unguaranteed to have an e-vehicle manufactured at an affordable price. In spite of using super chargers, the recharging time of the e-vehicles is longer as when compared to the fuel-run vehicles. The battery swapping concept, i.e, exchanging the charged batteries for the discharged ones at the charging stations is also being tried. Extensive research is also being carried out in the development of batteries. Despite having such undisputed constraints, the drastic development of the e-vehicle industry guarantees that an effective solution can be obtained for the every possible hinderance. This come-back of the electric vehicles shall reach its pinnacle and shall stand unparalleled as an urban commuter in the near future. Madhavan.
