LOT 481 $2.5 1848 CAL. PCGS AU50 An incredibly historic and important coin, a classic in the the annals of American numismatics. After gold was discovered in the America River in California in 1848 near Sutter’s Mill, 228 ounces were sent back to east in December of that year by the military governor, Col. R.B. Mason, directed to the Secretary of War, William Marcy. The gold was to be used to strike gold medals for General Zachary Taylor and General Winfield Scott--any remaining metal was to be used to strike quarter eagles, with “CAL.” stamped in the field to recognize the historical significance of the source of the gold, resulting in a mintage of 1,389 pieces. The gold rush that ensued created one of the largest mass migrations in history, and changed the course of not just American history, but also world history. Like many of the CAL. $2.50s, the surfaces show a semi-prooflike reflection, which can still be seen despite the light wear. Pleasing orange gold coloration accents the nicely struck up devices. We do note a few tiny marks, totally acceptable for the assigned grade. Housed in an old green tag holder. PCGS 11, NGC 5.
