THE SOUTH TEXAS COLLECTION LOT 181 25C 1796 PCGS AU53 CAC When is the last time a GEM AU CAC piece was offered? Of the silver denominations authorized by the April 1792 Act of Congress that established the U.S. Mint, the dime and quarter were the last to be struck and introduced to circulation. In all only 6,146 quarters were struck, and this emission was the entire mintage of quarters until 1804. In any grade, the 1796 is an important “Blue Chip” rarity, in high demand from low grade problematic examples all the way to the few GEM Mint State survivors. The present “GEM” AU B-1is a superb example, offering an amazing eye appeal on an issue that usually comes with evidence of cleaning or other defect. This one is the exact opposite of what is usually encountered. A bold, underlying lusterhas a distinctive flash, exhibiting a light reflection which suggests that when minted, it would have had the Prooflike surfaces that some of the Choice and Gem Mint State coins possess. After a brief stay in commerce, it was saved and lovingly cared for by generations of collectors where it was able to acquire a beautiful, antique patina on both sides. The sharply struck devices are a delight to behold and show only the slightest hint of rub on the highest points. We cannot locate even thetiniest of ticks or lines even after close inspection with a powerful loupe. For an AU, this coin has an eye appeal suggestive of an even higher grade!PCGS 8, NGC 5, CAC 5. You can go ahead and toss out any pricing info for this coin! The last PCGS coin in AU53 to sell was back in August 2006--a dozen years ago! Even then that coin sold for $50,600--way back then! As a PCGS/CAC in today’smarket, this coin should sell for much more, and should surpass easily the current PCGS Price Guide value of $56,000. With all the cleaned, ugly, and artificially toned AUs out there, this original beauty is a real prized for the collector and will finditself at home in a great type set or early quarter set. Either way, we know many people will enthusiastically compete to have the winning bid! PCGS# 5310 | ESTIMATE: $62,500+ 99
THE SOUTH TEXAS COLLECTION LOT 182 50C 1795 PCGS MS64+ CAC100
THE SOUTH TEXAS COLLECTION LOT 182 50C 1795 PCGS MS64+ CAC Legend Numismatics believes that this is by far one of the finest 1795 50C that exists! Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud to be able to offer arguably the FINEST O-131 in existence! Actually, this coin is one of the very FINEST 1795 half dollars of all varieties combined! What an AMAZING coin that is the definition of GEM quality! Prior to the Pogue Collection sale in May 2015, this was THE FINEST 1795 half dollar you could ever hope to own! Far superior to the highest ranking coin in the Overton Census, although the Tompkins Census lists a pair at 63. In terms of quality, the closest peer for the O-131 variety is the coin sold as lot 482 in Stack’s March 1998 auction. Very similar in appearance, the central devices of the presently offered Simpson coin are possessing of a much fuller strike, with nearly complete definition to the eagle’s breast feathers. Copious frosty mint luster blooms all over the smooth, defect free surfaceson both obverse and reverse. Highly attractive toning clings mainly to the peripheral devices, displaying shades of clear gold, violet, amber, and olive-tan. Struck from a later state of the dies, this GEM displays die damage across the central obverse, as well as some minor die cracks at the lower reverse legends. We also note some die clashing. The eye appeal is AMAZING, acoin that is truly a delight to behold and superior in quality to the vast majority of 1795 half dollars of any of the 32 different varieties cataloged by Al Overton. PCGS 2, NGC 5, CAC 4. This is the ONLY MS64+ graded at either service and is bested by only a pair of MS65s graded atPCGS for finest. The Pogue Coin, which was ex Norman Stack and Lawrence Stack Collections realized $411,250 three years ago--that coin replaced this GEM in the Bob Simpson Collection. No PCGS MS64 has ever sold via auction. This is a very important opportunity for the advanced early half dollar or type specialist to acquire one of the absolute FINEST 1795 half dollars that survives. A hearty congratulations in advance to the winning bidder; you are adding a SUPERB trophy of early American numismatics to your cabinet--vaulting it to a nearly unrivaled echelon! THE SOUTH TEXAS COLLECTION LOT 183 $1 1795 B-1, BB-21. 2 LEAVES. PCGS AU58 CAC Ex Hesselgesser Collection. Visually STUNNING and virtually MINT STATE! This GEM AU has just the slightest hint of friction on the highest details, keeping it from a full BU grade. It really does rank high among those graded 58, and is Premium Quality! Both sides have an essentially full satin, frosty mint luster, although the obverse definitely has some Prooflike tendencies when rotated in a light. Dove and olive patina blend together with accents of russet-tan and clear gold attesting to the originality of the surfaces. The surfaces are likewise unmolested and even using a strong glass we cannot find and marks worthy of mention. All the devices are crisply defined, with Liberty’s hair tresses fully and deeply embossed, and there is just the slightest hint of weakness at the central reverse. The eye appeal is exceptional and VERY HIGH END for the assigned grade. In the old days, this coin would likely have been described as Uncirculated. PCGS 21, NGC 6, CAC 4. The most recent AU58 graded by PCGS to sell in auction realized $84,000 in March 2018. As part of the Hesselgesser Sale in September 2011, this coin sold for $63,250 and another coin, a B-10 sold for $97,750. THE SOUTH TEXAS COLLECTIONLOT 184$1 1796 LG DATE, SM LETTERS. PCGS AU58 CACB-5, BB-65. Ranking among the FINEST knownexamples of this early dollar variety, this coin is aborderline Mint State piece that has a distinctiveProoflike flash that arrests the eye.Sharply struck from an earlier state of the dies wherethe die flaw above the I is lighter than usually seen. Thedefinition on both obverse and reverse is exceptionallycrisp and full throughout Robert Scot’s classic design. All of Liberty’s curly locks and drapery folds on her bustare completely visible. The usually weakly struck eagle’sbreast feathers likewise are boldly rendered from anexacting blow from the screw press. A delicate, mottledtoning frames the peripheries, while a gentle, cleargold dusts the more central areas of the design. Onlythe slightest touch of highpoint friction can be seen, and more than likely acquired from previous ownersremoving it from an envelope or from jostling in an oldcollector cabinet, rather than from circulation. As far asmarks are concerned, we note only a few microscopicticks that are well hidden and are visible only under apowerful glass. Needless to say further, the eye appeal ofthis GEM AU coin is SUPERB and totally original. Onlya few examples of this die marriage are known in suchlofty grades, Dave Bowers in 2013 estimated perhaps10-20 coins in AU50 and up. This does not match theCorrado Romano, Garrett, or Eliasberg specimens listedIn his list of Notable Specimens. We also know it is notthe Alto-Queller coin that was in a MS61 NGC holderlast time it sold (April 2008).PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. The only relevant auctionrecord we could find in our research was the Cardinal-Hesselgesser Collection coin, a PCGS AU55 CACthat sold in September 2011 for $36,800. This coinis sharper, offers a more intense looking luster, andbetter overall eye appeal than that coin. We knowthat when this Prooflike GEM AU58 crosses the block,it will exceed the current Collector’s Universe valueof $37,500. THE SOUTH TEXAS COLLECTION LOT 185 $1 1798 WIDE DATE. PCGS MS62 CAC A HIGH CONDITION CENSUS B-23, BB-105, and a very high end and wonderful CHOICE Mint State Bust Dollar for the type collector. While one of the more available issues for 1798, it is VERY RARE in Mint State. Frosty luster gleams from under a dusting of pearly iridescence. Blue and amber-gold hues frame the peripheries on both sides, fading to a pewter-silver color with tan and olive-gold accents in the center on the obverse and golden-crimson on the central reverse. Both sides have crisp strikes, with full definition to the hair curls and eagle’s feathers. Even under the close inspection with a strong glass there are only a couple of the teeniest of ticks evident, and no traces of even the slightest cabinet friction. The eye appeal is excellent. Ranking among the finest enumerated in Dave Bowers’ 2013 list of Notable Specimens behind the Stellar-Mo- relan; Fairbanks-Ostheimer; and Virgil Brand-T. James Clarke specimens. PCGS 3, NGC 0, CAC 2. Needless to say, this is a RARE date in all grades and this one is tied with one other example at MS65 at PCGS as FINEST known. One of about 200 estimated to survive in all grades from an original mintage of only 5,320. This coin was placed with a picky collector by Legend in 2011. As usually seen on such lower mintage dates, the fields offer a distinctive Prooflike flash to the luster. Sharply struck devices on both sides are nicely frosted and razor sharp. Superb GEM quality surfaces yield only a few tiny marks when viewed with a strong glass, but none of these detract from the amazing eye appeal, and are not out of the ordinary for a coin of this lofty designation.
