Lesson 2 Compost Manure and Chemical Fertilizer Every living thing needs some substances for aiding its growth and development. Plants also require food to survive and grow. The food that plants need is called fertilizer or manure. There is a trend of using both the compost manure and chemical fertilizer for the balanced development of plants. A short introduction and use of compost manure and chemical fertilizer has been presented below. 1. Compost Manure A mixture of decayed plants and other organic matters to be used in farming as a meal of plant is called compost manure. When the organic materials are mixed in the soil, they decay and become the food for plants. Human excretion, animal excretion, organic waste materials, green Compost Manure manure, liquid waste obtained from bio-gas plant, etc are also compost manure. Likewise, bone dust, fish dust, oil seed cake, poultry drooping, etc are also some examples of compost manure. Use of Compost Manure Various kinds of crops are planted in the farmlands every year. The nutrients present in the soil are absorbed by the plants. The fertility level of soil decreases if additional sources of nutrients are not added. Therefore, organic manure has to be used to maintain fertility level of soil and provide nutrients to the crops. It should be used during the field preparation. Generally it is applied before one month of planting crops after ploughing the field twice. The compost manure is mixed with the soil and put in the pits before planting fruit seedlings. It is necessary to apply compost manure regularly for developing the fertility of soil. The use of compost manure to the soil is an eco-friendly technique to increase the fertility of soil. 2. Chemical Fertilizer Only the compost manure may not be sufficient to maintain balance diet for plants. In order to supply the required amount of nutrient to the plants, it is necessary to use chemical fertilizer. Chemical fertilizer contains a high amount of Occupation, Business BOOK 99 7and Technology Education

plant nutrient. Chemical fertilizer is a meal Compost Manure for plants that is produced in the factories by chemical process from inorganic matters. It is prepared from two or more than two chemical elements. There are two kinds of chemical fertilizers: single element and multiple element fertilizer. Ammonium sulphate, urea, single super sulphate, muriate of potash are single element fertilizers. Complex salt, DAP are mixed or multiple element chemical fertilizers. Use of Chemical Fertilizer We use chemical fertilizer for better production. Among the chemical fertilizers, urea (nitrogenous fertilizer) is obtained by plant immediately after use. If the nitrogen fertilizer is not absorbed by the plants within 1-2 months, the fertilizer gets waste. Thus, it is better to use fertilizer from time to time during the period of crops. In case of other chemical fertilizer, if the fertilizer is applied before planting the crops, the plants get it for long period of time. The chemical fertilizers like phosphorus, potash, sulphur, boron, copper, etc should be applied in right amount as per the recommendation of technicians. The use of chemical fertilizer increase the production and farmers get good economic benefit.
