to express frustration about how artificial lights are ruining our night sky. It’s another thing to do something about it. This is a brief
summary of my friend Mario Motta’s persistent efforts to curtail light pollution.
By day, Mario is a cardiologist at the North Shore Medical Center in Salem,
Massachusetts. On clear nights, Mario operates a 32-inch telescope whose
dome is built above the garage of his house, located near Gloucester, Mass.
Mario is an active member of the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston, and
has won awards for his outreach efforts. On May 9th he becomes president of
the Massachusetts Medical Society, and he is a member of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Council of Scientific Affairs and Public Health.
Mario is attacking light pollution at the local, state, and national levels.
Working with Gloucester’s mayor and a committee, Mario showed the city
council that it could save $180,000 per year by using
full-cutoff, low-wattage bulbs. The council una

[Sky & Telescope magazine in February 2009] Sky & Telescope... -a longtime subscriber will complain that we have
“dumbed down” or “watered down” the magazine over the years to suit the
mass market. We have lost subscribers because of this perception.
My editorial colleagues and I are disappointed whenever we hear this comment. When we look at issues dating back 20 or 30 years, we don’t perceive that
the level of discussion for science or amateur articles has changed that much.
We ran more mathematical equations in the past, but other than that, we’re
running similarly substantive articles by leading scientists, science writers,
observers, and product reviewers. Our cosmology and astrophysics features
(such as this issue’s cover story) are more probing and comprehensive than
ever. When we ask readers to cite past articles of the type that we no longer run,
they often mention an esoteric subject that would have limited appeal today.
So why is there a gap between perception and r

President Bush delivered his well-publicized speech
outlining a vision for future human exploration of the solar system. He
described how NASA would return people to the Moon and set up a permanently occupied outpost. Later crewed missions would venture to Mars.
I can’t think of a more exciting prospect than seeing humans walk on Mars
in my lifetime, and I suspect many S&Treaders share that view. The Mars rovers have been an incredible success story, but a field geologist could perform
in a few days the same tasks that have taken Spirit and Opportunity five years
to accomplish. Moreover, if microbes are eking out an existence on the Red
Planet right now, it will probably require a human presence to root them out.
But to pay for NASA’s Constellation Moon program, President Bush called
for money to be taken from other NASA programs. When I worked at NASA’s
Goddard Space Flight Center from February 2007 to May 2008, I saw firsthand
the toll that budget cuts are taking on NASA’s

If you’re a long-time subscriber you have probably
noticed subtle changes over the past few months, and perhaps more with
this issue than any other. My colleagues and I have thought long and hard
about how to put our pages to their best possible use for you, the reader. The
gradual evolution you’re seeing is the result of numerous discussions held
over many months.
When I assumed the helm as editor last June, I wanted to give the magazine more flexibility so we could expand our coverage of important areas
such as astrophotography, deep-sky observing, and amateur contributions to
science. When I discussed my ideas with my editorial and art colleagues, we
reached a consensus that we needed to free up space so we could run articles
on a wider variety of topics, by a wider variety of authors. S&Tsubscribers
expressed similar sentiments when I asked them about the magazine.
Over the past few months, we’ve given ourselves flexibility by reducing
pages devoted to regular departmen

Well, you’re in luck—this book has a thousand answers.
Actually, it contains morethan a thousand answers to more than a thousand
