UNIT 1 ABOUT THAILAND INTRODUCTION Thailand is a popular destination among foreign tourists around the world. Nevertheless, tourists may sometimes cause problems or have difficulties spending their time in our country according to different beliefs and cultures among people from different parts of the world. Therefore, it is important to provide as much information as possible for those tourists to learn about before or during their stay in the country. Most of the information might be about something that can help them understand Thai natural features, as well as people’s characteristics, and other information essential for tourists to have a wonderful holiday or vacation here. This unit will provide the overview of this country. Picture 1.1: James Bond Island, AoPhang Nga National Park Source: (Author’s, 2015)
1. WARM-UP Task 1.1 Look at the picture on page 1 and tick (√) the choices that suit you. ______ 1) I have never been to a Southern beach before. ______ 2) II hope I can go to relax somewhere similar to the place in the picture sometime in the future. Task 1.2 Discuss in group where and the reason why you want to spend you holiday at. 2. READING Read the passage about Thailand and underline the regions and their characteristics mentioned in the text. Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia. It is a constitutional monarchy with very friendly people. They are famous for their hospitality and epitomize the country as “the land of smiles.” Thailand covers a total area of approximately 513,000 square kilometers (198,000 square miles) and is the 50th largest country in the world and the 12th largest in Asia! The north of the country borders Myanmar and Laos while the south is next to Malaysia and the Gulf of Thailand. The east of the country borders Cambodia and Laos, and the west is next to Myanmar and the Andaman Sea. There are many beautiful places for tourists to see as well as many interesting activities for them to do. Thailand is administratively divided into four distinct areas;
the mountainous North, the fertile Central Plains, the semi-arid plateau of the Northeast, and the many beautiful tropical beaches and offshore islands of the Southern peninsula. The current population of Thailand is about 69 million with the majority of about 80% ethnic Thais while the remainder consists of Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mon, Khmer, Burmese, and Lao decent. Most of the population is Buddhist. Besides, there are other geographic distinctions of population such as a Muslim majority in the lower South, near the Malaysian border, and hill tribe ethnic groups in the mountainous North. The ‘ Land of Smiles’ , is known for its hospitality, beautiful beaches, historical places and eco- attractions, its world- famous cuisine, good infrastructure and affordable accommodation. (Netherlands Embassy in Bangkok, 2017: 1 – 4) Task 2.1 Work in pairs. According to the passage above, point out the characteristics of each region of Thailand, and the main characteristics of the country that you think might attract foreign tourists to visit it. Example: 1) The Northeast is the semi-arid plateau. _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Thai people are friendly. _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________
Task 2.2 Read the passage again and answer the following questions. 1) What is the approximate number of population in Thailand? ______________________________________________________ 2) What is the main religion of the country? ______________________________________________________ 3) Where do most Muslims live? ______________________________________________________ 4) As in the text, what is the South of Thailand famous for? ______________________________________________________ 5) What international rank is Thailand by size? ______________________________________________________ 6) What make people around the world know Thailand? ______________________________________________________ Task 2.3 Match the two parts to make each complete and correct sentence about Thailand. _____1) There are various... a. in the northern region. _____2) Thai people … b. famous for wonderful _____3) Hill tribe people live… beaches and islands. _____4) Buddhism is practised … c. ethnic groups in Thailand. _____5) The South is.. d. is Thai food _____6) The name ‘the land of e. the majority of population smiles’ is derived from… in the country. _____7) Thailand is …. f. are friendly and generous. _____8) Ethnic Thais form… g. by most of the population.
_____9) Accommodation in h. the hospitality of Thai people. Thailand is not… i. very expensive _____10) Another world famous ….. j. a constitutional monarchy. Task 2.4 Look at the picture below and decide which choices might suit it. Then tick (√) the choice that you agree with. Picture 1.2: Happily Cooking Source: (Author’s, 2016)
______1) Most Thai people feel happy when cooking. ______2) The lady in the picture looks happy while cooking. ______3) Thai food cooking can be seen anywhere at street stalls in Thailand. ______4) The lady in the picture is making street food. Task 2.5 Read the extract about an impression of Thailand presented by a western tourist in Thailand and then decide which sentence is true or false according to the passage. My Impression of Thailand Thailand has various attractions for tourists to appreciate; tropical islands and beaches, warm weather, mountains, temples and even Thai food. You may hear many stories of Thailand before you first visit it, could be good or bad, but in no way can you take those stories for reality without actually going. Thailand is a very special place. My first impression of Thailand was shocked, but to be fair, it was also my first experience in Southeast Asia, and on top of that I hadn’t heard stories, nor had I done research on Thailand or surrounding areas. Immediately when arriving in Bangkok, the sense inducing smells of all food cooking on streets hits you like a love potion. Nearly overwhelmed by the intensity of smells of mixed herbs and frying spices, this at the same time, you see all these beautiful people who are so happy. Another impression is that, as you bump into the first person, they say hello or Sawasdii Kaa/ Krab to you. The fear of being in the unfamiliar country dissipates or
vanishes as your heart fills with the kind smiles and warming polite hello of the Thai people. More than a way of life, the politeness and general happiness seems to be culturally ingrained into their daily life. The people are the one thing you cannot compare with other countries since their kindness, happiness, and even their timid shyness is so captivating. (Stark, 2017: 41) True or False ______ 1) Thailand has a lot of beautiful natural scenery. ______ 2) Thailand was the first country in Southeast Asia that Mr. Stark visited. ______ 3) He researched on Thailand before coming to the country. ______4) The smells of food cooking on streets annoy tourists. ______ 5) Mr. Stark thinks Thai people are happy while cooking on streets. ______ 6) He implies that Thai people are angry when tourists bump into them. ______ 7) He implies that Thai people are friendly. ______ 8) He feels that Thai politeness and Thai greeting can help dissipate tourists’ fear of being in an unfamiliar country. ______ 9) He agrees that Thai people are not as charming as people in other countries. ______10) It is more likely that Mr. Stark really likes Thai people and Thailand.
Task 2.6 Read both texts again (Task 2.1 and Task 2.5) and discuss in groups what you are proud of about Thailand and what you might be ashamed of as a Thai citizen. Give the reasons for each of your feelings. We are proud that _____________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ Task 2.7 Read the following information about Thailand and then choose the correct answer to complete each statement. In tourism context, Thailand is divided into six regions: North, Northeast, Central, South, East, and West. The North is the country’s highlands. Vast mountain ranges dominate the landscape and are the source of many rivers. Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s tallest peak, is famous among tourists during the cool season for the Mae Kha Ning (frost flower) phenomenon as well as a sea of fog, nature trails, waterfalls, and botanical scenes. The Northeast features some of the beautiful northern highlands but also gorgeous plateaus. Hom Mali Rice (Thai Jasmine Rice) is grown here and exported
all over the world. The Mekong River is a very prominent river that runs through the area. Popular places along the Mekong River include Amphoe Chiang Khan of Loei Province, Tha Sadet Market in Nong Khai Province, Indochina Market in Mukdahan Province, and Sam Pan Bok Grand Canyon in Ubon Ratchathani Province. Central Thailand is mainly plains and is a huge area of rice farming and agriculture. The Chao Phraya River is very important to Thailand’s history. Interesting places to visit are ancient historical temples, Bang Pa-in Royal Palace and Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center in Ayutthaya Province, and Koh Kret in Nonthaburi Province. And if you like shopping, there are plenty of local markets in Bangkok for you to explore such as Wang Lang Market, Tha Phra Chan Market, Saphan Phut (Memorial Bridge) Night Market, and Asiatique Night Market. There are also Chao Phraya boat tours from Bangkok to Ayutthaya every day. The South contains many beautiful beaches and islands in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Well-known tourist destinations are Phuket Province, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe, and Koh Tao. Eastern Thailand is half mountain, half ocean. Although there aren’t many provinces here, it still has a lot of amazing sights and stunning locations to visit just like the rest of Thailand such as Koh Samed, Koh Chang, Koh Mak, Koh Lan, Koh Si Chang, Bang Saen Beach, Pattaya, Jomtien Beach, Laem Mae Phim Beach, and Mae Ram Phueng Beach. The West is mountainous with many woodlands, waterfalls, and dams, which is why there are a number of national parks in the area. Due to its geographical variation, there is a lot of incredible Thai nature to see in this western region.
Tourist attractions include Thong Pha Phum National Park, Srinakharin Dam, Vajiralongkorn Dam, Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, Sai Yok Yai Waterfall, Erawan Waterfall, Mon Bridge, Mueang Sing Historical Park, Three Pagodas Pass, Wat Wang Wiwekaram, Underwater City, The Bridge of the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, and World War II Museum and Art Gallery.
