FOREWORD It is July 1960; IIT Madras is ready to welcome the 2nd batch in its BTech prog ramme. Hostels and many Faculty buildings are under construction. A young, excited group of 120 aspiring students join with a gleam in their eyes and high expectations; the batch expands by 20 Direct Entrants in 1961 and finally by another 26 from the First batch, who become a part of the Second Batch. Some did not complete the course and over 30 have passed on; every one of them, ho we v er, is featured in this Photobook to reminisce, re-live and rejoice in the bonding, camaraderie and friendship of this Group who lived on campus like one family for over 4 memorable years; students from all parts of the countr y, taught and mentored by brilliant Professors from leading Universities of the world, including many from RWTH Aachen University of Ger many, responsible for laying a strong foundation for the curriculum and learning culture at IITM. Creating a Photobook of this nature, more than 57 years after leav- ing the IIT campus was a Herculean task; it could never have been accomplished but for the collaborative spirit and bonds formed in 1960, which have stood the test of time. Credit for commencing this project must go to the hard work, focus and vision of K Narayanan, popularly known as ‘GHOST’ who, over 40 years, put in tireless efforts single-handedly in compiling a readily usable database for the entire Batch. i

Using this database, the Photobook Project was launched in April 2020 in a modest way but with missionary zeal by Chandrasekaran Subramanian, popularly known as Chandru. His relentless follow-up with all 80+ members of the Group spread across the globe for their ‘Then & Now’ photos of self and families as well as their life j our ne y after IIT, has c ontributed to making this Project a reality. The Photobook features all the alumni pages arranged alphabetically by name (as per Convocation list), within their respective Branches. About 100 alumni with their ‘Then & Now’ photos of self and families along with their profiles updated as of ‘Dec 2022’ are spread across 2 pages. A further 52 alumni are covered in a single page with photo(s) and mini-Bios as available. Alumni who have passed on have their pages marked with a black stripe. A ‘People Finder’ at the end lists all the 166 batch-mates alphabetically with their corresponding page numbers. Chandru was ably assisted by his batchmates, Pradeep Mallick, Ramesh A Vaswani, and Bha giradha Rao ES, in editing the alumni profiles and finalising the design details of the Photobook. So also, the Heritage Centre, the Archives Department of IITMAA, and a Design Agency in Chennai, collaborated and contributed with great patience and understanding, culminating in the creation of this cherishable ' BTech 2nd Batch A lumni Photobook' Grateful thanks to each and every one! ii
