INTRODUCTION 2020 represented a turning point for the world. Although in the past we have suffered from plagues, diseases and pandemics — from which we have emerged stronger in Dr. Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula most cases — it is clear to us that the emergence and subsequent spread of COVID-19 was an unprecedented event, which came with the additional burden of a series of Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. economic and social uncertainties. One of them was undoubtedly the timely supply of food to all regions. It is necessary to emphasize that, despite this adverse scenario, the agri-food sector of the world, but especially that of our country, did not fail. On the contrary: it delivered and even overdelivered thanks to the daily contributions of farmers, ranchers, fishermen, fish farmers, day laborers, transporters and agro-industrialists, in short, of all the members of the agri-food chains who held their heads high and who did not stop working; even though they were also exposed to the effects of COVID-19. Thus, in the most intense year of this pandemic, the national primary sector registered a positive growth, annualized to the second quarter of 2021, of 4.5% compared to the same figure of the previous year. All of this is confirmed and demonstrated with the facts and figures offered by the Food, Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), through its annual publication: \"2021 Food & Agricultural Overview”. The work – of collecting, analyzing, validating and disseminating statistical and geospatial information of the sector – carried out by this organization, allows us to know that, in the period when COVID-19 had its highest impact, the country: cultivated 21.7 million hectares; fished 1.9 million tonnes and produced 7.4 million tonnes of meat. All of this makes for a total volume of agricultural and fisheries production of 290.7 million tonnes (1.04% more than in 2019), which allowed food to reach the markets and tables of Mexican families every day. Likewise, the value of the production reached MXN 1.241676 trillion, which was 3.4% higher than the 2019 registered figure. Likewise, international commitments were met, which generated a significant amount of foreign exchange and a favorable trade balance. In this sense, it is possible to assert that Mexico consolidated itself as an exporting power by achieving a presence in 192 countries; but, above all, by achieving a new historical maximum of foreign sales for USD 39.125 billion, placing us as the country with the 7th largest exports and obtaining 3.6 times more foreign currency than foreign tourism (10.996 billion USD) and 2.2 times more than oil exports (USD 17.484 billion). This foreign trade figure was 4.1% higher than that reached in 2019. Thus, the dynamism of agri-food exports allowed a trade surplus of USD 11.958 billion, which represents a 2.2x growth from the 2017 figure. These figures are evidence of us being on the right track to meet the objective of generating a new development model and public policies for the countryside, allowing to increase productivity for national consumption, based on criteria of inclusion and sustainability, contribute to national food security and the well-being of our population, as instructed at the start of his term by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. It is clear that our country has an important agricultural and fishing vocation, which we must continue to support and of which we should be proud, because its activity did not stop and, therefore, the strength that it demonstrated in this dark period, places it as a fundamental component in the economic recovery to come. We hope that this book, published by the Ministry of Agriculture through the SIAP, will serve as a tribute to all those who are part of the agri-food chain; to those that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has aptly called \"Food Heroes.\" 7 2021 Food & Agricultural Overview
